The Qatar Press Center condemns the targeting of journalists and civilians in the Al-Baqa Café massacre

Doha - July 1, 2025:

The Qatar Press Center condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab, who worked as a photojournalist for several media outlets, and the injury of journalist Bayan Abu Sultan in the Israeli bombing of the Al-Baqa Café on the Gaza City beachfront, which was sheltering dozens of displaced persons and journalists. This killing resulted in the martyrdom of at least 21 citizens, bringing the number of journalists killed to 231 since the beginning of the genocidal war against the population of the Gaza Strip.

This targeting comes within the context of ongoing attempts by the occupation to silence free speech and suppress the truth. Journalists working in the field are constantly exposed to danger while covering the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip and uncovering the truth.

The Qatar Press Center affirms that Israel, which has been waging a war of extermination against the people of Gaza since October 7, 2023, is committing systematic massacres against journalists and media professionals. It targets the locations and homes of journalists and media professionals, assassinating them with missiles and drones, to silence their voices, prevent them from conveying the truth to the world, and promote the Israeli narrative and lies.

The Center reiterates its call on the international community, UN, human rights, and media organizations, to condemn the targeting of journalists in Gaza and to take urgent action to hold the Israeli occupation accountable before international courts for war crimes against journalists and media professionals. Impunity has encouraged the Israeli occupation forces to continue their assassination, arrest, and terrorization of journalists, in full view of the world.

The last post by journalist Ismail Abu Hatab before his martyrdom in the Al-Baqa Café massacre on his official Twitter account was: "We are now only a short time away from a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. I pray to God that this war will be facilitated and stopped... The cabinet is in session, and we are waiting. We ask God for a speedy end."

On November 2, 2023, Ismail Abu Hatab was injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting him and a number of journalists while they were at Al-Ghafri Tower. He and his colleagues narrowly escaped certain death.

Activists circulated videos and photos of the devastation caused by the bombing, showing journalist Bayan Abu Sultan covered in blood after narrowly escaping death in the massacre.

In a related development, the Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip condemned the Israeli occupation's systematic targeting, killing, and assassination of Palestinian journalists.

It called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Federation of Arab Journalists, and all press organizations worldwide to condemn these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip.

المركز القطري للصحافة يدين استهداف صحفيين ومدنيين في مجزرة مقهى الباقة

يدين المركز القطري للصحافة بأشد العبارات، اغتيال الصحفي المصور الصحفي إسماعيل أبو حطب، الذي يعمل مصوراً صحفياً مع عدة منصات إعلامية ووسائل إعلام، وإصابة الصحفية بيان أبو سلطان في قصف الاحتلال مقهى "الباقة" على شاطئ بحر مدينة غزة، والتي كانت تؤوي عشرات النازحين والصحفيين، ما أدى إلى استشهاد 21 مواطناً على الأقل ليرتفع عدد الشهداء من الصحفيين إلى 231 صحفياً، وصحفية منذ بداية حرب الإبادة الجماعية على سكان القطاع.

ويأتي هذا الاستهداف في سياق متواصل من محاولات الاحتلال إسكات الصوت الحر وقمع الحقيقة، حيث تتعرض الكوادر الصحفية العاملة في الميدان لخطر دائم أثناء تغطيتهم العدوان المتواصل على القطاع، وكشفهم الحقيقة.

ويؤكد المركز القطري للصحافة أن إسرائيل التي تواصل حرب إبادة لسكان غزة منذ السابع من أكتوبر 2023، تمارس ارتكاب مجازر ممنهجة بحق الصحفيين والإعلاميين، باستهداف مواقع تمركز ومنازل الصحفيين والإعلاميين، واغتيالهم بالصواريخ والطائرات المسيرة، لإسكات صوتهم، ومنعهم من نقل الحقيقة للعالم، وتغليب السردية والأكاذيب الإسرائيلية.  

ويجدد المركز مطالبته المجتمع الدولي والمنظمات الأممية والحقوقية والإعلامية، بإدانة استهداف الصحفيين في غزة، والتحرّك العاجل لمحاسبة الاحتلال الإسرائيلي أمام المحاكم الدولية، على جرائم الحرب ضد الصحفيين والإعلاميين، حيث شجّع الإفلات من المحاسبة قوات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، على مواصلة مسلسل اغتيال، واعتقال وترويع الصحفيين، تحت مرأى ومسمع العالم.

وكان آخر ما كتبه الصحفي إسماعيل أبو حطب قبل استشهاده في مجزرة مقهى "الباقة" عبر حسابه الرسمي على منصة (X): نحن الآن على مدة قصيرة من إعلان وقف إطلاق النار على قطاع غزة، أدعو الله أن تتسهل وتوقف هذه الحرب ..الكابينت منعقد ونحن ننتظر، نسأل الله الفرج القريب.

كان الزميل إسماعيل أبو حطب قد أصيب في 2 نوفمبر 2023 في قصف إسرائيلي استهدفه مع عدد من الصحفيين أثناء وجودهم ببرج الغفري ونجا هو وزملاؤه في ذلك الوقت من موت مُحقق.

وتداول ناشطون مقاطعَ فيديو وصوراً للدمار الذي خلفه القصف، تظهر فيها الزميلة الصحفية بيان أبو سلطان ملطخة بالدماء بعد نجاتها من الموت في المجزرة.

في سياق متصل، أدان المكتب الإعلامي الحكومي في قطاع غزة استهداف وقتل واغتيال الاحتلال الإسرائيلي للصحفيين الفلسطينيين بشكل ممنهج.

ودعا الاتحاد الدولي للصحفيين، واتحاد الصحفيين العرب، وكل الهيئاتالصحفية في جميع دول العالم، إلى إدانة هذه الجرائم الممنهجة ضدالصحفيين والإعلاميين الفلسطينيين في قطاع غزة.
