Airwars assessment
On September 23rd, 2024 at least six civilians were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on a building in the Hreik neighbourhood of Dahieh, a southern suburb of Beirut.
While Al-Mayadeen’s correspondent reported seven people injured with one in critical condition, other reports such as @AkhbarMinAlbeqaa on Facebook and Al-Balad radio reported six injured, three of whom were described as in “moderate to critical” condition.
Multiple sources including journalist Hussein Ayyad reported that the strike was an assassination attempt against Hezbollah leader Ali Karaki which failed to killed him. No official Israeli statement was found in relation to this claim. Beirut City recounted a total of three missiles involved in this incident.
On X, @NabilaFadel6060 reported that the attack occurred behind the Bir al-Abd Mosque and the former Orphanage Station in Beirut’s southern suburbs and @lakiss_nancy stated that it happened near Bahman Hospital.
A video posted by @LBCI_NEWS shows smoke coming from an apartment building, which is similarly captured in an image from @Khabrnews1. In another video posted by Lebanos, an ambulance can be seen trying to go down a crowded street in Bir al-Abd. Journalist Hussein Ayyad is also recorded at the site of the strike, which destroyed multiple garage doors and a vehicle on the first floor and entered an apartment on the second floor of a multi-story apartment building.
Karaki was later reported killed in the strike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27th.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces. While local sources reported that the Israeli military had announced their attack on Ali Karaki, statements from Israeli officials were not found in connection to this specific strike at this time. Therefore, this incident has been graded as a “likely strike.”
The local time of the incident is unknown.
