Airwars assessment
On Tuesday, November 28th, 2023, four members of the same family: a father, a mother and their two children, were injured as a result of an alleged artillery strike with guided missiles by the Syrian regime and/or the Russian military and/or the Iranian military on the Katyan-Zardana road, north of Idlib, Syria. Conflicting information was found in the sources as to whether others were also killed.
News source @Almohrar1 provided the names of four of the civilians injured: Juma Muhammad Dahan, Ali Dahan, Alia Dahan, and Amon Al-Darubash.
Twitter/X the Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefen) reported that one child had to undergo the amputation of his hand as a result of the strike, whereas Twitter/X user @syriannewsweb reported on the same platform that both kids had their hands amputated. Twitter/X user @mzmgr941 also reported on the amputation, sharing on the social media platform a picture of a human forearm still attached to a blurred out hand and cut off right above the elbow.
Moreover, the Syrian Civil Defense reported on Twitter/X the words of Muhammad Al-Basha, a volunteer from the White Helmets: “A flash of sadness was in the eyes of their father and mother, and they were also injured, but their injuries were minor.”
The majority of sources, including the Syrian Civil Defense, reported that four civilians were injured. Facebook posts from Muhammad Al-Adlabi and Rami Al Saeed both mentioned “martyrs” in addition to the wounded without providing additional details, while Media Observatory posted that “six martyrs” resulted from strikes on Zardana. Reports of deaths were not found in other local sources, and a tweet from @mzmgr941 specifically mentioned that “By the grace of God, there are no martyrs, but very serious injuries.”
The Syrian Civil Defense included images in their tweets which showed a hole in a burnt reddish soil, what seems to be the aftermath of an explosion. The other pictures showed men wearing Syrian Civil Defense uniforms transporting someone, then seemingly putting someone inside an ambulance. Another picture showed a man sitting on a hospital bed, with a white bandage on his forearm, while a person wearing a Syrian Civil Defense uniform stood next to him.
The Syrian Civil Defence reported that two missiles hit the location of the attack. One landed near a civilian car close to the injured civilians; the second one hit a poultry farm inside which the family was seeking refuge. Other local sources described the location of the strike as a “civilian workers’ workshop.”
Sources were conflicted about the responsibility of the attack. Muhammad Al-Adlabi, Rami Al Saeed and the Media Observatory attributed responsibility to the Russian and Iranian militaries, specifically mentioning that “Kornet missiles” were used in the attack. All the other sources referred to the Syrian regime “and militias loyal to it” as responsible for the airstrike.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
