On November 4, 2023 three members of a family were killed by shelling allegedly fired by Israeli ground forces near the Abbas Junction in Gaza City, Gaza. 83-year-old grandmother Hajja Feryal Ezz al-Din al-Dajani (Khayal), her granddaughter 38-year-old Dalia Mohammed Khayal and her grandson’s wife, Lina Abo al-Naja Abed al-Ghani al-Almi (Khayal), were reported killed. Hajja Feryal’s daughter Suha Nasri Khayal was also reportedly injured, while other sources mention “injuries”.
The shelling was reported by multiple local news sources, many of whom initially reported that a family had been critically injured. Appeals from people associated with the family were also posted and described a harrowing scene, stating that as the family attempted to evacuate their home, they were hit by shelling outside of the al-Zeitoun Pharmacy at the Abbas intersection. Those accounts stated that ambulances and medics were unable to reach the trapped family, some of whom were seriously injured and heavily bleeding, as shelling and small arms fire made the wounded inaccessible. A Facebook post by Mohamed Alzanin specifically identified Israeli vehicles in the area, appealing to the Red Cross to help the “martyrs and wounded” since the Civil Defense was unable to safely enter the area.
Later family and friends posted memorial posts for the three women that were killed.
In a memorial posted to Facebook by Diana Khaled El Souran, Feryal Ezz al-Din al-Dajani (Khayal), wife of the late Nasri Khayal and nicknamed Umm Hussam was described as a “compassionate mother, the virtuous lady of good memory, the beloved.” Hana Salah Abu Ramadan also offered condolences on behalf of the family of the late Salah Abu Ramadan to the sons and daughters of Feryal and her late husband Nasri, “Dr. Hussam, Professor Najati, the dear Suha (Umm Tariq) and Mona (Umm Salim)”. The family of Salah Abu Ramadan also mourned the wife of Feryal’s grandson Tariq Khayal, Lina, and Tariq’s sister Dalia.
A post from Natali [al-Alami Abu Shahla] offered heartfelt condolences for the loss of their “dear and beloved” sister Lina, praying that her resting place be pleasant. A cousin of Lina named Youssef Wahba also mourned her loss.
In a post by Maha Zimmo Aboramadan memorializing the members of the Khayal family who were killed, “a speedy recovery” is wished to “you”, which seems to be referring to Suha, Feryal’s daughter and Dalia’s mother. However, it is unclear the total number of injuries, as multiple sources refer to a “Palestinian family” as injured – which has been quantified as three until further information is found.
All names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released multiple lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on September 16, 2024.
According to Azzedine [al-]Dajani, the shelling occurred in the al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
