On Friday, 13 June 2025, a child in the village of al-Rafid in the Quneitra governorate, Syria, was reportedly injured by shrapnel allegedly from an Iranian missile that was intercepted by Israeli forces.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that “a child in the village of al-Rafid in Quneitra governorate was injured as a result of Iranian missile shrapnel falling on the area” amid tensions between Iran and Israel in the region. Jesr Press noted that the shrapnel resulted from what was “believed to be Iranian missiles” that fell after “an air clash with Israel” in the airspace adjacent to the Golan Heights. The injured child was reportedly taken to a government hospital for treatment. Jesr News also shared an image of Israeli forces entering towns in Quneitra to conduct a search.

SOHR and Jesr News stated that other Iranian missiles and drones had also been intercepted by Israel, resulting in shrapnel falling across the Quneitra countryside, with Jesr News stating that “14 field sources” had reported confirming the situation. Furat News and SOHR added that the escalations between the two nations came “at the expense of Syrian territory”, with Furat News sharing an image of what appears to be a large dust cloud emerging from the impact of the fallen shrapnel.

Facebook user Mohammed Fahd shared a video of a young male child, Amir Izz Al-Din Al-Thaher, who appears uninjured, and stated that “no child was injured as a result of falling shrapnel in the town of Al-Rafid.” Consequently, Airwars has graded the civilian harm status of the incident as “Contested”, with a casualty range of 0-1.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the shrapnel as having been from the alleged interception of an Iranian drone by Israeli forces. Therefore, Airwars has graded strike status as likely, as sources agree that the Iranian military was responsible for the original munition. However, as it is unclear whether the resulting civilian harm resulted from the original munition or interception, the civilian harm status has been recorded as contested.
