During the afternoon of Saturday, 8 February 2025, a child was killed, and at least eight civilians, including six children and two women, were injured in an alleged Turkish artillery shelling and/or drone strike on the village of Ashma (Awina), located south of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) in the Aleppo governorate of Syria.
The reports on injury toll were different, stating that from eight to 11 civilians were injured, including two women and up to eight children. The injured were evacuated to local medical facilities for treatment; three sustained injuries severe enough to require surgery. A toddler, Jilan Hamo, aged either 10 months or two years, according to different reports, died of her injuries on February 9. Facebook accounts of Kobani.Al Hadath and Hawar News an image of the girl, lying on a hospital bed, connected to an IV, with a bandage on her stomach.
The following civilians, including two women and six children, were identified as injured: Ibrahim Muhammad Habash, 13 years old; Rudi Muhammad Habash, 12 years old; Muslim Yasser Habash, 13 years old; Muhammad Yasser Habash, 15 years old; Aisha Jamal Ismail, 28 years old; Huda Saleh Hamou, 20 years old; Ibrahim Saleh Hamou, 15 years old; and Abdullah Ismail Hamou, three years old.
Pictures and videos depicting children, the primary victims of these attacks, getting medical attention were posted on Facebook by Kobni FM, the local digital news agency, as well as Rojnews and Foxpress.
According to the Aleppo Governorate, several shells struck residential areas, while Hawar and North Press Agency reports indicated that seven or eight artillery rounds hit three homes, destroying one and severely damaging two others.
Responsibility has been attributed to Turkish forces, though independent verification remains pending. The sources differed on the nature of the attack – while some claimed that it was artillery shelling, others stated that the village was attacked with drones.
