A major civilian casualty incident, in which 20-24 civilians died, took place in the center of Abu Kamal city, Deir Ezzor Governorate, according to multiple local sources.
Shaam News claimed “dozens” of civilians were killed or wounded. There was some contention regarding the number of civilians killed, as the raid allegedly targeted a prison of the so-called Islamic State organization, where combatants were also present. The exact number of prisoners killed and wounded was unclear from the sources. However Sdusyria asserted that “all prisoners were martyrs” and Micro News suspected all to be civilians, while attributing the attack to the US-led Coalition.
Baladi News said that a house had been turned into a prison by ISIS, and that the prisoners killed were eight from Deir Ezzor and nine from Iraq.
The Syrian Observatory described the place as the headquarters for “Islamic State” in the city of Abu Kamal, saying that the number of Iraqi detainees killed had risen to ten – whilst others were seriously wounded.
A later report by Euphrates Post listed the detainees killed in the airstrikes.
Two people from Al Mayadeen and 9 Iraqi martyrs whose identity has not been identified.
Albukamalnews documented the death of one man (Saleh al-Sayer al-Marsoumi), from the village of al-Bagouz, they mentioned that “Dahesh requested 50 million to get him out of prison, but the prisoner did not have this amount”
A subsequent report by Euphrates Post listed three additional civilians.
In a later report by Aletihad press, the death toll was put at 20 “including foreign prisoners”, the report said “the organization transferred them to the national hospital in the city and imposed a cordon on the area”. Aletihad along with the majority of sources blamed the US-led Coalition.
