(Previous Incident Code: ISIRQ260303a )
On the morning of Tuesday, 3 March 2026, at least one person was injured in an alleged Iranian drone attack on the Azadi camp, housing refugees from Iranian Kurdistan, in the Koya district of Erbil governorate, Iraq. The name and condition of the injured person are currently unavailable.
Al Jazeera was among the first to report the incident at 8 a.m. on its Facebook account. Tariq al-Haidari, the mayor of Koya district, stated that one drone directly struck the hospital within the camp, while another targeted an ammunition depot, causing a large fire and secondary explosions. Al-Haidari noted that only one minor injury was reported, attributing the limited casualties to preemptive evacuation measures taken before the attack.
Local media outlets, including Kurdistan24, documented the incident with footage showing smoke rising from the site and reported that “the Azadi camp in Koya was attacked by three drones” and that the strikes had resulted in “injuries.” Basnews Arabic also reported that three drones had been involved in the attack, but claimed that “the attack injured one person.” Other sources, including Rudaw, reported one injury as well.
On Facebook, @Derkamine Derkane Hamko reported at 11:19 a.m. an attack for the second time in the day on the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Koya, including the media center in Camp Azadi, leading to one injury. This information was not corroborated by other sources.
According to Ronahi news outlet, the Azadi camp “houses members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) and their families displaced from eastern Kurdistan.”
Airwars has graded this incident as ‘fair’ due to the consistent reporting from multiple news agencies and local officials regarding the nature of the attack and the resulting injury or injuries.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the drone strike to the Iranian military.
