The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the International Coalition, reportedly conducted a counter-terrorism operation that wounded and arrested Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) member Hussein Allawi al-Osman between midnight and dawn on January 1st 2023 in the Al-Attal neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Al Shahil.
Several sources corroborated that the SDF surrounded al-Osman’s house demanding he surrender before arresting him. Naher Media also noted the presence of drones over the area at the time of the airdrop operation.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also mentioned that “clashes with light weapons” occurred during the operation and Alaraby News stated that al-Osman was “arrested after being wounded.” However, @humam__isa reported that the operation ended with al-Osman’s arrest without any resistance.
Euphrates Post reported that al-Osman’s family were arrested alongside him during the raid, without providing details on how many members of his family and who.
SOHR reported that al-Osman is considered to be one of the most prominent members of ISIS in the area and that he had previously been arrested and then released on bail and tribal mediation.
Neither the SDF nor the International Coalition have taken responsibility for this operation.
