Seven members of the Baydar family, including three women and a child, were killed and an infant was injured when an alleged Coalition airstrike hit the Baydar family’s home in the Military neighbourhood in Al-Shirqat, Iraq early in the morning on February 28, 2016.
According to testimony from a family member who survived the attack provided directly to Airwars, Yousif Abdulhamid Baydar, seven members of the Baydar family were killed: 49-year-old Abdulhamid Ahmed Baydar, his wife 46-year-old Auzhiyah Suwailih Sultan, their son 20-year-old Muhammad Abdulhamid Baydar, Muhammad’s wife 19-year-old Namariq Tahsin Mohammed, Muhammad and Namariq’s son three-year-old Ali Muhammad Abdulhamid Baydar, Muhammad’s brother 18-year-old Ibrahim Abdulhamid Baydar and Ibrahim’s wife 19-year-old Hiyam Yassin Khader. Muhammad’s other son Ahmad Muhammad Abdulhamid Baydar, who was only six months old at the time, was also lightly injured in the attack. 17-year-old Yousif, his brother Omar, and their sister Rahma were the only other members of the family to survive. The bombing struck the Baydar family home and a surrounding house.
Following the attack, the rubble of the destroyed home had to be removed so that the family could rebuild their home. Images provided directly to Airwars show the collapsed remnants of the home crushing the family’s household possessions, with blankets and clothes visible in the rubble.
Two public sources, Ali Musa Muhammad and Salahaddin News, both reported at the time that 18 members of the Abdul Hamid al-Baydar al-Jumaili family were killed and two others were wounded by Coalition airstrikes in the Al-Shirqat district. However, based on the direct survivor testimony, it is likely that this higher casualty toll reflects aggregated reporting across multiple incidents, and has therefore not been included in the casualty range.
Public sources blamed the US-led Coalition for the strike.
