Airwars assessment
On August 23, 2024, Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan was killed at dawn in a home on 20 or 40 Street in Al Busayra, eastern Deir Ezzor Governorate, Syria. He was the father of two girls, and a nurse at Al Hamadi Specialist Hospital in Al Busayra, with at least one source alleging that he was a member of ISIS. Originally from Hama, he had been displaced to Al Busayra and was reportedly killed in an SDF-International Coalition raid although it is unclear whether the Coalition or SDF were responsible for his death.
According to the Twitter account @DeirEzzore, members of a joint SDF-International Coalition Forces operation executed Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan after surrounding his house and engaging in a 30 minute “dialogue”. Facebook accounts ‘Free Hourly Channel’ and Al-Hasaka Events both claimed that joint SDF-International Coalition Forces carried out the raid on Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan’s house, adding the claim that member(s) of the SDF militia were responsible for shooting him.
The Eastern Echo Facebook Account also reported that a joint SDF-International Coalition Forces operation killed Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan, added that “according to sources” al-Hasan was accused of helping terrorist groups. Raqqa Media Center was the only local source to directly accuse Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan of being a member of ISIS, while according to Halab Today TV, he had been accused of treating and “dealing with” wounded ISIS members in the course of his job as a nurse.
The Deir Ezzor Countryside Facebook account claimed the SDF was responsible for killing Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan. Refuting the claims that Mohammad was part of any terrorist groups, the account reported that malicious and false reports were made in order to “get rid of him” or blackmail his family for money in order to free him from prison. The Deir Ezzor Countryside account said Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan was a decent and helpful person, who had been killed as part of rampant corruption.
The Eastern Darbil Facebook Account reported that Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan had been shot “in a field execution” outside his house by joint SDF-International Coalition forces. According to the account, the SDF accused Mohammad of “clashing” with the forces at his house, and carrying out the Ghuwayran Prison Attack. The account denied all the allegations, saying Mohammad Ahmad al-Hasan was of a good reputation and there had been no “clash”.
The same graphic photo or set of photos were posted by Al-Hasaka Events, Knights of the Colonel, and the Deir Ezzor Countryside Facebook accounts. They show a man with dark hair and a dark beard lying on a patterned blanket, wearing a dark red vest top. He is covered in blood, and it is unclear if the man is severely injured or had already passed away at the time the photo(s) were taken.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the raid to the SDF forces and/or Coalition forces.
The incident occured around dawn.
