Last Updated: May 7, 2026

Two people, 73-year-old Yisrael Aloni and Evgenia Blinder, were killed during the early morning of 14 June, 2025, in an alleged Iranian missile attack in Rishon LeZion. Up to 21 were reported wounded.

Yisrael Aloni, a grandfather of 10 or 11, lived in Rishon LeZion, where he had worked as a barber for 60 years. Yisrael was in the basement of his home at the time of the strike, but was not in a safe room. His son, Eran, who had spoken to his father the day prior, remembered him as dedicated and community-oriented, “someone who was always willing to help others.” He was, Eran said, a “wonderful person […] a good man.”

The shrapnel had hit “three parts of [Yisrael’s] body.” He was taken to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, but was pronounced dead. Eran stressed the importance of bomb shelters, in the wake of his father’s death: “I want to share a message: anyone who hears a siren – take it seriously. Look what happened to our father. Getting to a bomb shelter saves lives.”

A photograph of Yisrael was widely shared – sporting a white shirt, he is smiling towards the camera.

Evgenia Blinder was “a woman in her sixties,” and Yisrael’s neighbour. She had immigrated to Israel from Ukraine in 1992. Formerly a surgeon, she then worked as a nurse in a nursing home in Jaffa until retiring. A report from Magen David Adom stated that “a woman in her 60s was rescued [from the rubble] unconscious and with no signs of life.” It is very probable this was Evgenia.

An infant – reported as either two or three-months old – was rescued from underneath rubble. An image shared by CUFI showed a police officer holding the child. Most sources agreed that approximately 20 people were injured in the strike, a number that was later increased to 21.

Ifat Benhaim, a resident of Rishon LeZion, shared her experience of the strike. Quoted by X/Twitter user MarioNawfal, Ifat said that with her family, she had run to the basement: “We closed the door… and suddenly there was such a big boom. I thought all the house fell on us.” They emerged into their home to see the windows exploded and the living room covered in debris. Sally Ilan, a neighbour, had a similar experience. Her home destroyed, Sally spoke to decades of memories: “It was the first house to be built in the neighborhood. My father was so eager to build it. Forty years of memories are gone… It’s heavy on the heart.”

The strike itself was well documented. A video of the strike was captured from afar by X/Twitter user @MenchOsint. Security camera footage shared by @MagicFlower22 showed the impact on one apartment block: the explosion rocks through a stairwell, as both a man and child’s voices are audible.

Photographs shared by X/Twitter user @HeedoAbuLaban showed the extensive damage wrought by the strike: amongst significant debris, a fire can be seen burning through a roof. @SuppressedNws alleged that “at least 10 buildings” in the area had been destroyed. Further photographs shared by @manniefabian corroborated this – multiple residences are heavily damaged.

Where sources named a belligerent, all pointed to the Iranian military.

A senior Iranian military official says at least 150 targets were struck during the retaliatory operation against the Israeli regime, including several critically strategic military bases. Speaking to the state television early on Saturday, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, a senior advisor to the chief commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said the Operation True Promise III was successfully implemented by the IRGC aerospace division. “These targets were successfully struck in multiple phases,” Brigadier General Vahidi, who served as Interior Minister in the Ebrahim Raeisi administration, stated. The official enumerated some of the targets as the Nevatim Airbase and the Ovda Airbase, located respectively in the north-central and extreme southern areas of the occupied territories. “These bases housed command and control as well as electronic warfare centers, and were among the places from which the aggression against Iran had been launched,” he noted. Vahidi identified as another major target as the regime’s Tel Nof Airbase near the city of Tel Aviv. According to the IRGC commander, the regime’s ministry for military affairs and military-industrial centers were also struck during the Islamic Republic’s reprisal. ‘A major blow that can be repeated’ Vahidi added that the operation dealt a “major blow” to the Zionist regime, demonstrating a “heavy show of force,” and emphasized that such strikes could be repeated. The retaliation aimed “to make them realize that they have committed a miscalculation and made a grave error.” The Israeli aggression, targeting various cities across Iran, including the capital, Tehran, included a series of precision attacks aimed at assassinations, which led to the martyrdom of Major General Hossein Salami, the former commander-in-chief of the IRGC. Among the other victims were Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC’s aerospace division, and Major General Gholam-Ali Rashid, commander of the country’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters. The attacks also claimed the lives of veteran nuclear scientists Mohammad-Mehdi Tehranchi, Fereydoun Abbasi, and Dr. Abdol-Hamid Minoucher, along with more than 70 civilians, including children and women. According to Vahidi, following the aggression, the Israeli regime believed it had successfully “destroyed” several of Iran’s military infrastructure centers and rendered the Islamic Republic incapable of retaliation. However, he reiterated that this was a serious “miscalculation” on Israel’s part, warning, “They must now await the consequences, which have only just begun.”

'We ensured that there were no trapped people' - Massive destruction in Israel's Rishon LeZion following Iranian strike that claimed three lives in the city. Video footage shows dozens of damaged residential buildings and vehicles in the central Israeli city. The Iranian strike came in retaliation for a series of Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) attacks on Iran, launched under 'Operation Rising Lion.' That operation targeted nuclear facilities and high-ranking officials within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and military. In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at several Israeli sites, heavily striking Tel Aviv and nearby cities like Rishon LeZion.

“IT’S HEAVY ON THE HEART” - ISRAELI FAMILIES REEL AFTER IRANIAN MISSILE FLATTENS HOMES At 5:00 AM, a missile from Iran slammed into the quiet streets of Rishon LeZion - and nothing felt quiet after that. Ifat Benhaim ran with her family into their basement. “We closed the door… and suddenly there was such a big boom. I thought all the house fell on us.” When they emerged, the windows were gone, the living room buried in dust and debris. Her home - 29 years of memories - ripped apart in seconds. Down the block, Sally Ilan stood in front of what used to be her parents’ house, holding the only thing left: a few pieces of salvaged crockery. “It was the first house to be built in the neighborhood. My father was so eager to build it. Forty years of memories are gone… It’s heavy on the heart.” The explosion shattered dozens of cars, crushed rooftops, and left entire families displaced. Someone wrote it best, finger-scrawled in the dust on a shattered windshield: “Until when?” This isn’t just rubble. It’s the fallout of a war still warming up. Source: BBC News

Etti Cohen Angel, 74, and Israel Aloni, 73, were killed overnight into Saturday in Iranian missile strikes on Israel. A third victim of the strikes has yet to be named. Speaking to Channel 13 News, Aloni's son, Eran, said their family is heartbroken. "My father was a wonderful person, always helping others, a good man," he said. The army maintains that civilians who follow safety guidelines and stay in protected areas should not suffer serious harm from Iranian missiles, despite their wide blast radius. The IDF expects Iran to resume its attacks in the evening hours and says that restrictions on the home front are likely to remain in place in the coming days.

The three people killed in the barrages of Iranian ballistic missiles Friday night and early Saturday morning have been named as Etti Cohen Engel, Yisrael Aloni, and Yevgenia Blinder. Iran launched several barrages of ballistic missiles at Israel, sending Israelis across the country rushing to shelters. The three people who were killed were not in shelters when their homes were hit. Engel, in her 60s, was critically wounded in the missile strike on Ramat Gan on Friday night and later died of her injuries. Yisrael Aloni, 73, was killed in a barrage on the central city of Rishon Lezion early Saturday. Blinder was killed in the same barrage. Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories By signing up, you agree to the terms Aloni’s son, Eran, told Kan news that his father was killed following a direct missile strike to his apartment building. Aloni was alone in his basement apartment, which had no protected space, his son said. Blinder, in her 60s, worked as a caregiver in the house next to Aloni’s in Rishon Lezion, Hebrew outlets reported Saturday night. In addition to the three people killed, some 80 people were wounded by the few missiles that impacted residential areas. Approximately 200 ballistic missiles were fired from Iran, with most either falling short or being intercepted by air defenses. The military said that around 25%, fewer than 50 missiles, were not intercepted “according to protocol,” meaning they were identified as being headed for open areas and were left to strike them without causing damage to any critical infrastructure. A “small number” of missiles made it through air defenses, the Israel Defense Forces said, including in residential areas in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Rishon Lezion in central Israel. Iranian media claimed hundreds of missiles were fired in the first barrage late Friday, while the IDF estimated that the actual number stood at less than 100. (Photo by Jack GUEZ / AFP) Four waves of attacks overnight each consisted of dozens of missiles, according to the IDF, which declined to provide a specific number for each volley. Iran’s state news agency IRNA claimed hundreds of ballistic missiles had been launched in retaliation for Israel’s biggest-ever attacks on Iran, which blasted Iran’s huge underground nuclear site at Natanz and other nuclear and military sites, and wiped out its top military commanders. Israeli strikes in Iran continued throughout Saturday. The Israeli operation was expected to last several days at least, according to military officials, who added that the IDF was preparing for heavy fire from Iran, but asserted that “at the end of the operation, there will be no nuclear threat” from the Islamic Republic. At midnight on Friday Sveta’s four-year-old daughter was asleep on the floor outside their shattered apartment block, as the rest of the family weighed up where they should spend the night.A missile from the first Iranian salvo fired at Tel Aviv had landed a couple of blocks away, killing at least one person, injuring at least 16 others and damaging hundreds of shops and homes in this quiet residential area. The 37-year-old was sanguine about her own losses, and backed the government decision to attack Iran even though it had so quickly cost her family their home.“I support it completely,” she said as her older daughter stroked their chihuahua. “This is nothing compared to what they will be able to do if they get their hand on the A-bomb [nuclear weapons]. We can’t afford for the Iranians to get them.“We tell [our daughters] that as long as we go to the shelter together, everything is OK. The damage in the house is just material things.”Sveta’s daughters after an Iranian missile hit their apartment block in Tel Aviv. Photograph: Emma Graham-Harrison/The GuardianThe family’s street, in a residential area of Ramat Gan town east of Tel Aviv, was busy with emergency services crunching over shattered glass and other wreckage to reach the building that took a direct hit.It had been reduced to layers of concrete rubble and twisted steel, with an apparently undamaged cabinet hanging incongruously from the remains of the first floor. Two hours after the explosion, rescue teams were still searching through the wreckage for survivors, as a drone buzzed overhead when the sirens wailed again.Damage to Sveta’s building caused by the Iranian strike. Photograph: Emma Graham-Harrison/The GuardianIran launched more than 150 missiles at Israeli in five waves overnight, and though most were intercepted, about 10 got through air defences, a military spokesperson said. Those strikes killed three people in the Tel Aviv area and injured more than 70 others around the country. It was the bloodiest few hours inside Israel since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, but the toll was dwarfed by the damage that Israel inflicted on Iran.Yaniv Nimni’s home lost its roof and all its windows in the last barrage just before dawn, when one of the missiles landed in his suburban street in the town of Rishon LeZion, just south of Tel Aviv.“This is only money, as long as the family are OK, that’s what matters,” he said as he surveyed the damage. His only question about the government’s decision to hit Iran was why they left it so long. “It should have been done much earlier,” he said.Rescue personnel work on damaged buildings in Rishon LeZion following a missile attack from Iran. Photograph: Quique Kierszenbaum/The GuardianIsraelis who have become used to occasional strikes from smaller, short-range rockets from Gaza or Lebanon were stunned by the destruction. For saving lives, the country’s shelter network worked. The three people killed in Ramat Gan and Rishon LeZion had been outside protected areas when the missiles struck, authorities said. The two-storey houses next to Nimni’s were stripped back to raw concrete and piles of rubble, their ceilings collapsed, furnishings shredded. Trees in their gardens were snapped to the ground and cars crumpled on the street outside. At the edge of the police cordon in Ramat Gan, Bar, 31, begged to be allowed back into her building for just a few minutes to pick up a few things for her children. The family escaped the bombing because they were staying with her parents. Bar realised they’d had a narrow escape when she recognised her home on the news and, after the all-clear, came back to try to check on their apartment.Iran’s first missile salvo caused a death and injuries and damaged property in the quiet residential area of Tel Aviv. Photograph: Emma Graham-Harrison/The Guardian“They told me I can’t go in because of the damage,” she said. “I’m anxious and in shock, and the kids are very scared. We have nowhere to go, no home to go back to.”Residents of nearby buildings walked past dragging suitcases and weighed down with backpacks. Most were leaving to stay with friends and relatives, because the city government had declared a mass casualty event and was only offering camp beds in a nearby school.A few hundred metres down the road Orly, 27, was helping a friend sweep up shattered glass from the window of a friend’s beauty salon.“You see what a ballistic missile does? We are hundreds of metres away here,” she said. “We were in the shelter when it hit and you felt it. I’ve been through a couple of wars now and I knew this was different.”A beauty salon after Iran’s retaliatory attacks. Photograph: Emma Graham-Harrison/The GuardianElia Digma, 18, lives near a high-rise residential building in central Tel Aviv that was hit in the first salvo and had come to inspect the damage. “It’s a miracle only five people were hurt here,” he said. “It was one hell of a boom, and everything shook.”Shocked by the destruction and braced for more attacks, he too was still confident that a pre-emptive attack on Iran had been necessary.“We are doing what we need to defend ourselves,” Elia said. “The Bible says if someone comes to kill you, you must kill them first. We are ready for anything and everything that will bring quiet.”
