Last Updated: May 7, 2026

On the morning of Sunday, June 22, 2025, at least three civilians were slightly injured when an alleged Iranian missile or an Israeli misfired interceptor missile hit a public square in a residential area in the third-largest city of Israel, Haifa. The attack caused extensive damage to the house of Daniel Stein, a volunteer EMT with Magen David Adom.

The news outlet Times of Israel reported that the strike wounded three people, who medics said were in good condition, and caused damage, without providing additional details.

Daniel Stein, a medic from Haifa, “became a symbol of the Iranian attacks” after an Iranian rocket reportedly had hit his house, but in shock, he rescued children and neighbors from the rubble. His picture, where he was seen carrying two small children, was widely circulated around the world, with major international media outlet, Associated Press, also posting it.

Daniel Stein spoke to Magen David Adom telling the circumstances of the strike: “The missile landed right in front of our house, extremely close. The house suffered extensive damage from the impact. I made sure my family was safe, and then I got a call from Itzik Erblich, who’s also a volunteer EMT with MDA. I keep a first responder ambulance at home, and Itzik usually joins me when we respond to incidents. As soon as he heard the explosion, he called me, and I told him the strike hit my house. He immediately came over and helped rescue my children from the house, from under the rubble. Once everyone was out, I also left the house and immediately began searching for and evacuating the injured from the scene. I see this as my mission—this is our job and this is why we’re here. We put our emotions and fear aside and go to work.”

Local sources shared videos capturing the moment of the strike and its aftermath on Twitter/X. In particular, @nademyst shared a video showing a large plume of smoke billowing over residential buildings, while @NewspointjK posted a video showing one of the streets of Haifa, with clouds of smoke seen in the distance. Twitter/X user IndSamachar News (@Indsamachar) reported “massive smoke spotted in Haifa” and also shared a video showing clouds of smoke. @TheArabEye0 posted a video showing the exact moment of the strike, with a large cloud of smoke emerging in the form of a mushroom.

According to the daily media Yedioth Ahronoth, heavy structural damage occurred in Haifa, but no additional details were provided.

Initially, Israeli local sources reported the incident was caused by the failed air defense interceptor, but sources later described the incident as an Iranian ballistic missile strike that was not detected and intercepted by the Israeli Air Force. According to the internal investigation reported by the Times of Israel the next day, the Iranian missile split from its warhead midair, and interceptors were launched only at the back section. The warhead itself went undetected and hit Haifa. However, as some local sources referred to the incident as a “misfired” Israeli interceptor missile, this incident has been graded as “contested” until further information is found.

Manage alert preferences on your profile page 22 June 2025, 9:53 am Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent The IDF Home Front Command suspects that an air defense interceptor malfunctioned and crashed in Haifa amid Iran’s ballistic missile attack, which was the reason for sirens not sounding in the northern city. An early warning was issued via the cell broadcast system in Haifa, but no sirens sounded as no ballistic missiles were heading for the city. During the attack, an air defense interceptor likely misfired and impacted in Haifa, according to a preliminary Home Front Command investigation. “This is not a malfunction in the warning system,” the IDF says, adding that the incident is under further investigation. The impact wounded three people, who medics say are in good condition, and caused damage. At least 27 missiles were launched by Iran in the attack in two salvos. One missile hit a residential area of Tel Aviv, wounding 13 people lightly, and another hit homes in Ness Tziona, wounding six lightly. One man was moderately hurt by shrapnel on the Route 431 highway, near Be’er Yaakov in central Israel. The Home Front Command is also investigating whether Iran used a cluster bomb warhead in the attack this morning, as it did last week, but thus far has not found any evidence of this. 23 June 2025, 10:00 am Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent After further investigation, the IDF has determined that the impact in Haifa yesterday was not a failed interceptor as initially suspected, but an Iranian ballistic missile that was not detected correctly. The missile hit a public square in a residential area of the city. Three people were lightly hurt, including one person who was relatively close to the impact site. There was a “technical failure” with the detection of the missile, according to a Home Front Command and Israeli Air Force investigation. Therefore, no sirens sounded and no interceptors were launched to shoot the missile down. The Home Front Command had issued an early warning via the cell broadcast system in Haifa, which it says helped prevent further harm, as most people were seeking shelter even without sirens sounding. According to the investigation, the Iranian missile split from its warhead mid-air, and interceptors were launched only at the back section. The warhead itself went undetected and hit Haifa. The missile itself was not unusual, according to the probe, and was similar to others fired by Iran at Israel amid the war. The incident appears to have been an anomaly.

(JACK GUEZ / AFP) The Home Front Command had issued an early warning via the cell broadcast system in Haifa, which it said helped prevent further harm, as most people were seeking shelter even without sirens sounding. The missile itself was not unusual, according to the probe, and was similar to others fired by Iran at Israel amid the war. The incident appears to have been an anomaly. The military said it drew “several lessons that will be implemented immediately.” “The IDF continuously learns lessons and reiterates that the defense is not hermetic,” it added. A rescue worker carries two children as residents evacuate from the site where a missile launched from Iran struck Haifa, Sunday, June 22, 2025. (AP Photo/Baz Ratner) The strike in Haifa came amid a barrage of 27 missiles from Iran Sunday morning, with impacts in residential areas of Tel Aviv and Ness Tziona. Some 86 people were injured. Iran has been firing missiles at Israel in response to Israel’s sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program, which it says is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state. Iran, which avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction, has consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. Israel says Iran has recently taken steps toward weaponization. Iran has retaliated to Israel’s attacks by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. So far, Iran’s missile attacks have killed 24 people and wounded thousands in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. Some of the missiles that have not been intercepted by air defenses have hit apartment buildings, a university and a hospital, causing heavy damage. Is The Times of Israel important to you? A major escalation unfolded early Sunday morning as Iran launched a large-scale missile barrage targeting multiple locations across Israel following a US strike on its nuclear facilities, Anadolu reports. According to the daily Israel Hayom, Iran launched at least 40 missiles in a heavy barrage that struck targets in Haifa, Tel Aviv, and multiple other locations across Israel’s coastal and central regions. The Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported that Iranian missiles landed in at least 10 separate sites inside the country. Israeli Channel 14 confirmed that five Iranian missiles hit Israeli territory, three in the Haifa area and two in central Israel, while Israeli Channel 12 reported “an unusual event” in Haifa accompanied by multiple explosions. Alarms sounded across northern and central Israel, including Haifa, where no prior warnings had sounded during earlier strikes, it added. According to the daily Yedioth Ahronoth, heavy structural damage occurred in Haifa, with additional damage reported in the Shephelah region and the Dan Bloc, which includes Tel Aviv and its suburbs. READ: US lawmakers slam Trump for ‘unilateral’ strike on Iran without congressional approval A building in Greater Tel Aviv suffered direct impact, and numerous buildings were destroyed along the coastal region due to Iranian missile strikes, according to KAN. The Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom reported that its teams responded to multiple impact sites. It reported 11 initial injuries, including one person in moderate condition. Later reports from Channel 13 stated that the number of injured rose to 16, and Yedioth Ahronoth confirmed at least 23 casualties, mostly minor, with one person remaining in moderate condition. Iranian attack A spokesperson for the Iranian military operation Al-Waad Al-Sadiq 3 (True Promise 3) stated that the missile attacks targeted Ben Gurion Airport, biological research centers, and Israeli command and control facilities. In response, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee confirmed that the Israeli Air Force launched retaliatory strikes against Iranian military targets in western Iran. The strikes included missile launchers and Iranian personnel reportedly preparing further attacks against Israel. Additional launch platforms were targeted shortly after, claimed Adraee. This latest escalation came after US President Donald Trump said American forces completed “very successful” airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites earlier on Sunday. Trump had, according to American media reports, already given his approval for military action against Iran, after Israel assassinated several high-ranking Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists last week. Trump’s announcement came after media reports indicated the Pentagon was moving B-2 bombers from its air base in the US state of Missouri toward the Persian Gulf. Following US strikes, Iran called on the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to condemn the US aggression and to hold accountable those who violate international law. Hostilities broke out on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks. Meanwhile, in Iran, 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded in the Israeli assault, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
