Airwars Assessment
At dawn on Monday, March 2, 2026, a family of eight was killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike in the town of Toul in the Nabatieh District of Lebanon. Hussein Muhammad Fatouni, his wife, Mayada Mohamed Qazan, their sons Ferial Hussein Sharaf al-Din, Muhammad al-Baqir Hussein Fatouni, Ali Al-Hadi Hussein Fatouni, Sajid Hussein Fatouni, Sajid Hussein Fatouni, and their daughter Batoul Hussein Fatouni died as a result of the alleged strike. The family’s grandmother, Khadija Hassan Sharaf El-Din, was initially wounded in the attack, but later succumbed to her injuries.
@alnourradio was the first to report the incident and the death of seven family members on Twitter/X at 4:52 a.m. Other X accounts, such as @qudsn, @znn_lb, and @breakingnews_mt, shared this information as well.
The deceased family was related to Al-Mayadeen journalist Fatima Fatouni. In a video posted on the Al-Mayadeen social media channels, Fatima stands in a protective vest in the rubble of the family home and explains, “seven martyrs ascended from my family members due to the Israeli aggression on the south.” This was prior to the eighth member of her family, grandmother Khadija, passing away.
On Fatima’s Facebook account, she shared the news of her grandmother’s passing on March 22 with a photo of her grandmother, an elderly woman in black clothes, standing outdoors in front of a blooming bush.
Some social media accounts mention that Fatima Fatouni had asked Prime Minister Nawaf Salam during a press conference prior to the alleged attack, “How do you intend to protect my family in the south when they’re not doing well?” to which the prime minister responded: “We have a doctor here.” The PM’s response was seen as mocking by some users.
Multiple news outlets reported the seven family members killed with photos and videos of the destruction of the area and a collage of the photos of the deceased, all of whom were adults, except Sajid. A video shared by @almodononline on Twitter/X showed two residential buildings heavily damaged and one collapsed, as well as four destroyed cars and a lot of debris on the ground.
Additionally, family members and friends posted tributes to the victims.
The official account of Rimal Rimal Secondary School on Facebook mourned the death of its student, Sajid Fatouni, and his family. Sajid was also a member of Imam Al-Mahdi Scouts. A Facebook account @Jibshit Rida shared several images of Sajid related to his activities in the organization. In one of the images, he is seen in nature, in a setting that resembles a summer camp, showing a victory sign. He is also wearing a red tie, characteristic of Imam Al-Mahdi Scouts. In another image, he is shown in a classroom with many other schoolboys. The post reads, “the soil of the South deserves Scout Sajid Hussein Fatouni, Martyr.”
Imam al-Mahdi Scout group is a Hezbollah-affiliated scouting organisation that is registered with the Lebanese Scouting Federation. While Hezbollah operates an active militant wing, its political presence is also deeply enmeshed within the state, providing social and organisational services, primarily in the Shia majority areas in Southern Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut. With this context in mind, and given that there is no indication of militant activities, Sajid has been counted as a civilian.
@Sara Ramadan Kachmar lamented the death of Batoul Hussein Fatouni on Facebook, writing, “With a broken heart and profound sorrow, I mourn the loss of my brother’s, sister’s, friend’s, and little sister’s bride, the kind, gentle, and faithful one, the joy of our home, our martyred bride, Batoul Hussein Fatouni. May you find peace in this station.” She added an image of a smiling young woman or girl, dressed in black and wearing glasses. @Ghinaa Bitar added images and videos showing Batoul in different settings, including a video where she was exchanging rings with a man during their engagement or wedding.
@Ftouni Nour mourned the death of Ali Al-Hadi Hussein Fatouni, writing on Facebook: “How can I mourn you, my father, my brother, my support? My voice trembles whenever I hear your name. How can I bid you farewell, you who were my support when the world turned against me? I mourn you with a heart heavy with your absence, and all words fail me in your absence.” She added an image of Ali, a young bearded man wearing a three-piece suit, a white shirt and a bow tie.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
