Airwars assessment
At least seven civilians, mostly members of the Mahfouzi family, were killed by an alleged Israeli airstrike on their home in Barish in South Lebanon on September 23, 2024. One militant was also likely killed in the strike, who also appears to be part of the extended Mahfouzi family.
A Facebook post from Ali Osseily listed the names of those killed in Barish: Muhammad Hassan Mahfouz (Hajj Hamza-Mahdi Haidar), Muhammad’s son, Dhu al-Fiqar Muhammad Mahfouz (Sajid), Dhu al-Fiqar’s wife, Doha Hassan Yassin and her unborn child named Muhammad Mahdi, Dhu al-Fiqar and Doha’s daughter Fatima Dhu al-Fiqar Mahfouz, Muhammad’s daughter Fatima al-Batoul Muhammad Mahfouz, her daughter Zainab Abbas Muqallid, and Muhammad’s grandson Hussein al-Abbas Mahfouz.
On social media Zainab Mazah posted that an individual named Ahmed Mohammed Mazah was also killed in the same strike, along with an image of Ahmed in a uniform with the Hezbollah logo. In line with Airwars methodology, Ahmed has not been counted among the civilian casualties and is instead listed as a militant.
A Telegram post by Lebanon News reported that the Israeli raids on a home in Barish resulted in the death of five people, including children. According to ‘This is Lebanon News,’ at the time of the strike the home was occupied by seven people.
A Facebook post by Nour Kh offered blessings to the “martyr” Doha Hassan Yassin, her husband and her daughter, along with a picture of Doha’s husband and Fatima, a beautiful young toddler in pink flower sunglasses. Fatima Ali Al Mahdi also posted a condolence message for Doha and her family, along with an image of Doha, Dhu al-Fiqar, and Fatima and many images of Fatima, a happy and smiling young toddler.
An image posted by Hussein Mazah shows Dhu al-Fiqar in what appears to be a uniform for the Imam Mahdi Scouts, a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and a Hezbollah-affiliated organisation. Membership of the Scouts is not understood at this time by Airwars teams to indicate involvement in militant actions related to Hezbollah, and as such, Dhu al-Fiqar has been counted among the civilian casualties.
Bint Jbeil news memorialised Fatima Al-Batoul Mahfouz and her daughter Zainab along with an image of Zainab, a very young girl in a black dress with ponytails in her hair.
Bint Jbeil news reported that a child named Hussein Mahfouz was missing after the Israeli strike. Hussein’s death was then confirmed by a number of local sources, including the Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas Regiment, which announced that Hussein was a member of their Barish “troop”, which is part of the Imam Mahdi Scouts, a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and a Hezbollah-affiliated organisation. As Hussein is a child and there is no additional indication of militant activities, Hussein has been counted among the civilian casualties.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
Family members (7)
