Airwars assessment

On the evening of September 23rd 2024, an alleged Israeli airstrike destroyed a five-storey building on “the main street” of the town of Ain Baal in the Tyre (Sour) district of Lebanon, killing at least five civilians, including two women and three men, and one potential militant.

Airwars researchers identified the names of five civilians killed in the strike, including three men, Ali Nimr Abu Eid, Fadl Radwan Basma, Bassam Sorour, and two women, Marwa Al-Raz and Zainab Nasrallah Shaheen.

Another man was also killed in the incident, Ali Bashir Basma, though his civilian status is unclear. An image posted by the Amal Movement – Jabal Amel Region commemorated Ali Bashir Basma’s death. In the post, Ali Bashir Basma is shown wearing a military uniform superimposed on a background displaying the AMAL flag, though there is no visible insignia on his uniform. AMAL is a political party that used to operate a militia and is now allied with Hezbollah. Membership of AMAL does not necessarily indicate militant status, and there was no other evidence found online that Ali was a member of an armed group. However, due to the image of Ali in a military uniform, he has been categorised by Airwars with “contested” status as a civilian/militant until further information comes to light. This means he has been included in the upper belligerent range and the upper civilian casualty range, but not in either minimum tally.

According to reports from the Ain Baal Civil Defense, emergency teams from the Martyr Hassan Nahib Basma Volunteer Centre were called in to put out fires and evacuate residents from the affected areas.

Following news of the incident, friends and family took to social media to name the deceased and mourn their loss. Several sources congratulated the “martyrdom” of their loved ones. Hussein Aboeid congratulated his father, Ali Nimr Abu Eid, on becoming a “martyr” and Ghassan Housseina declared that Fadl Radwan Basma was now a “precious and heroic martyr.”

Bassam Sorour was found two days after the incident after his body was recovered from under the rubble. On September 27, 2024, members of the Civil Defence in Batoule Centre assisted in his funeral. In the images shared by Batoule Civil Defense on social media, Bassam Sorour’s coffin appears to be covered in a Hezbollah flag. While Hezbollah operates an active militant wing, its political presence is also deeply enmeshed within the state, providing social and organisational services, primarily in the Shia majority areas in Southern Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut. With this context in mind, Airwars is not considering a flag on a Hezbollah flag on a coffin to indicate that an individual was a Hezbollah militant. Given that there is no indication of militant activities by Bassam, Bassam Sorour has been counted as a civilian. Airwars will update the incident should new information become available.

Multiple local sources including @news_hadeel mentioned that “wounded” had resulted from the strike. However, none provided an exact toll of how many people were injured.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

The incident occured in the evening.
