On the morning of Monday, September 23, 2024, an alleged Israeli missile attack hit a residential building in the Northern Burj Al-Shamali refugee camp east of Tyre in the Al-Maashouk area in southern Lebanon, killing three civilian men, one of them a Palestinian refugee living in the camp, and injured a number of civilians.
A 22-year-old Palestinian refugee from Burj al-Shamali camp Muhammad Ismail al-Hajj was killed alongside a refugee from Syria, Abdullah Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sheh, who had previously been living in the Sayyida Zeinab camp in Syria, and a former camp resident, Ahmed Allam.
Multiple social media accounts, including @PalinfoAr, Alburj Alshamali camp, Alrashidieh camp official page, and Qastal news, described the killing of the young men, with many sharing photos of Muhammad Ismail Al-Hajj, and Abdullah Muhammad Ibrahim.
Muhammad al-Hajj was a young man pictured with short dark hair. In the images shared on social media, he is standing wearing a yellow T-shirt.
According to the details reported by the Refugee Portal correspondent in Burj Al-Shamali camp, Muhammad al-Hajj was present at his workplace in the Al-Ma’shouq community when an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the site, killing the young man. The source pointed out that Muhammad worked in the area. Later, Palestine Refugee Portal provided additional details about Muhammad, writing that he was a struggling young man who worked as a carpenter to support his family and his father.
His uncle Sami Al-Hajj (Abu Ayman) told the media about the difficulty of identifying Muhammad because his body was completely burned. The funeral was reportedly delayed because of the difficulties in finding his body.
Abdullah Ibrahim was also a young man with curly hair and beard. According to the Facebook post by Al-Ameed Jalal Abu Shihab, Abdullah Ibrahim had also spent time displaced in Sayyida Zeinab camp in Syria.
Alsandarilla Manalo also published on Facebook a photo of Ahmed Allam, saying that Allam was a former resident of Burj Al-Shamali camp.
A Facebook post by @nabatieh.org and other social media users shared a video showing what is described as “The Civil Defense of the Islamic Message Scouts” pulling an elderly man out of the rubble from the North Tower in Burj Al-Shamali.
Further reports from yasour.org and refugeesps.net emphasized the impact on the community, noting that the strikes targeted residential areas and caused significant devastation, though two attacked houses were reportedly mostly empty at the time of the attack. These sources depicted scenes of destruction and detailed the community’s response to the crisis.
Social media accounts documented the aftermath of the alleged Israeli airstrike in Burj al-Shamali, particularly noting the distinct smoke clouds visible from various locations.
Twitter/X user @ABKt198990 posted an image capturing a distant smoke cloud from the area. Similarly, @Samarr_96 and Mazen Mase shared images showing a smoke cloud closer up but from different locations. Residential buildings are visible around the area. Alarabiya Lebanon also shared a post with a media clip showing a distinctive white smoke rising in the distance. According to the post, this showed the alleged Israeli bombardment of the northern Burj area in Tyre.
Twitter/X user @Samarr_96 shared an image documenting the influx of wounded to local medical facilities, with an ambulance that can be seen surrounded by civilians, and @AlKhabarME posted videos showing damage to civilian homes, which highlighted the severity of the alleged strike.
The aftermath of the attack was also marked by the community’s mourning and memorial activities. Posts by social media accounts like Alsandarilla Manalo and Mazen Mosa reflected the public grief, announcing funeral arrangements and sharing images from the funerals, which were attended by large crowds. During the funeral, a coffin with the body of Muhammed was wrapped in a Palestinian flag and carried out along streets in a big funeral procession. The funeral was seemingly attended by Fatah members, according to Facebook user Al-Ameed Jalal Abu Shihab, though none of the men appeared to have any links to the group. Facebook user Yasser Abu Shihab included a video of Abdullah Ibrahim’s burial, held after noon prayers the day of the strike.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
