Last Updated: December 15, 2024

On the evening of Monday, November 6th, 2023, journalist Muhammad Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja was killed after an alleged Israeli airstrike hit his family home in the Al-Nasr neighbourhood in Gaza City. The alleged strike killed 12 other members of the Al-Jaja family, including four children and five women, one of whom was pregnant, and injured at least one other member of the family.

Muhammad Al Jaja was a media worker and the organisational development consultant at Press House-Palestine.

Muhammad Al-Jaja’s mother, Noura Khamis Abu Hasira Al-Jaja, and father, Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja were reportedly killed in the incident alongside Muhammed’s wife, Shima Abdel Halim Abu Aska, and daughters, Sham Muhammad Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja and Noura Muhammad Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja. His sisters, Zainab Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja and Israa Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja were killed, along with Israa Ghanem’s husband Nimr Haraz and their two children, Muhammad Nimr Haraz and Hana Nimr Haraz. Muhammed Al-Jaja’s brother Tawfiq Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja was killed with his wife, Hala Al-Amsi who was pregnant at the time of her death.

Numerous local and international outlets reported the incident, including the Shehab Agency, Al-Jazeera, and the Committee to Protect Journalists. According to Muhammad Al-Jaja’s sister, Shaymaa Ghanem Al-Jaja, her niece had survived the alleged strike but was injured.

A graphic video showing at least five corpses lying on the ground and covered with blankets was widely circulated on social networks. Muhammad Al-Jaja’s blue vest and press ID were placed over one of the bodies. To the left appear to be the bodies of two infants sharing the same stretcher.

Atef Abu Saif, who claimed to have been with Muhammad Al-Jaja the day before the alleged strike, wrote in a farewell Facebook post: “He was busy all the time providing assistance to the afflicted in shelter centres, calling and going to bakeries and supermarkets. From seven in the morning until sunset, he is busy with the worries of others. He refused to move south and remained steadfast in his home in the Al-Nasr neighbourhood until the shell came and killed him and his family”. He ended his message by writing: “In Al-Shifa Hospital, the press jacket over his body with his identification card reminds us of all the pain that awaits us on the road.”

According to fellow journalist Belal Jadallah – who was later himself killed after an alleged Israeli airstrike on November 19th 2023 – Muhammad Al-Jaja was “a model of morals, professionalism, and chivalry”. Like Atef Abu Saif, he underlined his colleague’s commitment to his community: “Then, when he is almost done writing, he spends all the hours of the day during the war, running between bakeries, water stations, and stores to provide for the needs of those around him and his colleagues, and offering aid to the afflicted.”

The post included two photos of a severely damaged building. A similar image was shared by the Facebook account MsdrNews: “The effects of the bombing that destroyed the house of fellow journalist Muhammad Al-Jaja, opposite Al-Shifa Tower, which led to the martyrdom of him and his family.”

The day after he was killed, Muhammad Al-Jaja, along with Belal Jadallah, was scheduled to participate as a speaker in the conference ‘Freedom of Expression and Information: What Is the Role of New Media?’, organised by the Council of Europe within the World Forum for Democracy. In a biography published on the conference’s website, now dedicated to the memory of both journalists, it was stated that Muhammad had “12 years of extensive experience in organizational development and strategic planning, focusing on freedom of expression issues and journalist protection”. The biography also highlighted that he had “demonstrated a deep commitment to advocating for press freedom and the protection of journalists in Palestine and beyond.”

Relatives and friends of the Al-Jaja family expressed their grief in posts on social media. According to some of these messages, Sham Muhammad Ghanem Tawfiq Al-Jaja, one of Muhammad Al-Jaja’s daughters, was only seven when she was killed. Several users shared a recent photo of Sham Al-Jaja from before the incident, wearing a red dress. The user @mrs_h45mes shared a photo of Muhammad Al-Jaja in what was “the happiest day of his life”. In the picture, he smiles at his new-born daughter, Sham.

The X account @GazaMartyrs quotes Ahmed Al-Madhoon, who was reportedly a friend of the journalist: “When we used to meet, his daughter Sham would bring us juice, and we would accompany her to buy snacks for school. We would talk about her intelligence and how much she resembled him. He saw a part of himself in her.”

A message of condolence shared by Shaymaa Ghanem Al-Jaja, Muhammad Al-Jaja’s sister, detailed each of the 13 relatives she lost on the 6th of November. “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, and we are saddened by your separation.”

Muhammad Al-Jaja’s sister-in-law, Hala Al-Amsi, had married just that July and was four months pregnant, according to a message sent to the platform Untold Palestine by a friend of hers, Ruzalinda Al-Ashi. “I’m writing these words with tears in my eyes; they flow for my companion and the love of my heart, Hala.” In her message, she also mentioned that her friend was “happy to marry the love of her life” and that “joy radiated from her eyes”. “She is a very kind girl with a pure heart, a light on the soul, and a true friend.”

Several international organisations – including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Women Journalists Without Chains – expressed their anger at the alleged attack and called for the protection of journalists and media workers in conflict zones. In a post on their official Facebook account, the WJWC declared that Muhammad Al-Jaja’s killing was a crime that was “added to a list of what we believe to be war crimes against journalists, which include murder, targeting families, destroying journalistic institutions, and restricting the work of journalistic crews.”

Just two days before his death, Muhammad Al-Jaja posted his final Facebook message: “We are alone”.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Tonight, the war took my friend Mohammed al-Jaja. We used to spend all day together—me, him, and Bilal—at the Press House. He was constantly busy helping those displaced in shelters, making calls and going to bakeries and supermarkets. From seven in the morning until sunset, he was preoccupied with the suffering of others. He refused to flee south and remained steadfast in his home in the al-Nasr neighborhood until a shell came and killed him and his family. Last night, we each went our separate ways before sunset, and our last words were, "See you tomorrow," but there is no tomorrow today, Mohammed. Now we are missing one of our own, and Mohammed will not return with his sense of humor, his determination to work, to help, and to write about those whom the war has crushed. Like every morning, our mornings are different, more sorrowful, and weigh more heavily on our faltering journey in search of survival. No one can bear this pain. At al-Shifa Hospital, his press vest and identification card lie on his body, reminding us of all the pain that awaits us on the road ahead.

With profound sorrow and grief, I mourn the loss of my dear colleague, journalist and friend, institutional development consultant at the Press House, my beloved brother, Muhammad al-Jaja, who was martyred this morning in his home near al-Shifa Hospital, along with his wife, daughters, parents, siblings, and relatives who had sought refuge in his house. Muhammad was a paragon of ethics, professionalism, and chivalry. He was an excellent writer in English, capturing the suffering of his people for international media. During the war, he would barely finish writing before spending his days going from bakery to water station and shop to provide for the needs of those around him and his colleagues, offering aid to those affected. He refused to flee south and remained steadfast in his home until his martyrdom. Today, he was supposed to travel to France to participate in an international media conference, but little did he know that he would be traveling to Paradise, God willing, to meet God as a martyr. May God have mercy on you, Muhammad, and your family. Words cannot express my sorrow at your tragic loss.

Journalist Mohammed al-Jaja and several members of his family were killed on Monday, November 6, in an Israeli airstrike on his home in the al-Nasr neighborhood of Gaza City. With al-Jaja's death, the number of journalists killed by Israel since October 7 has risen to more than 35, in addition to 32 injured. The fate of photographers Nidal al-Wahidi and Haitham Abdel Wahed remains unknown. This crime adds to what we believe are war crimes against journalists, including killings, targeting families, destroying media outlets, and restricting the work of journalists. While Journalists Without Borders believes that attacks on journalists are an Israeli attempt to commit crimes in the dark and away from the world's gaze, it calls on the international community to take urgent action to ensure the safety of journalists in Gaza and other conflict zones. #Palestine #Gaza #FreedomOfExpressionFirst #JournalistsWithoutBorders

They departed, and their departure was a heavy blow to the heart. In their absence, all pleasures have turned to bitterness. O God, illuminate the graves of those for whom our hearts yearn. O God, grant them spaciousness in their graves, a place without end. Grant their resting place fragrance, their darkness light, and their sins forgiveness. Cool their graves, increase their good deeds beyond measure, and make Paradise their abode. Sixty-seven days have passed since your departure, and one still cannot comprehend or believe it. How fortunate you are, you asked for it and received it, dear ones. Praise be to God. O God, we do not ask You to avert Your decree, but we ask You for Your mercy within it. The martyr journalist Mohammed Al-Jajah. He was a friend, brother, teacher, colleague, and guide. Mohammed used to say, "I have visited 30 countries in Europe and elsewhere, but there is nothing better and more beautiful than Gaza. Mohammed was a leader in civil society in Gaza and an advisor to various international and local institutions." His friend Ahmed Al-Madhoon says about his daughter Sham, who was martyred with him: "When we used to meet, his daughter Sham would bring us juice, and we would accompany her to buy snacks for school. We would talk about her intelligence and how much she resembled him. He saw a part of himself in her." Mohammed and his daughter Sham were martyred in an Israeli airstrike on their home on November 6, 2023. His wife, son, and several relatives also lost their lives.

1 Published :   07-11-2023 14:02|Muhammad Abu Hasira, a journalist at the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa), was killed by an Israeli Occupation attack on his residence in Gaza City. The assault occurred near the fishermen's port on the western outskirts of Gaza City, resulting in the tragic death of Abu Hasira and 42 members of his family, including his sons and brothers. This marks the second journalist casualty of Tuesday's Israeli Occupation strikes on Gaza, following the earlier loss of journalist Yahya Abu Munie, during the continuous and severe raids on Gaza City. With Abu Hasira's passing, the count of journalists martyred since the onset of the Israeli Occupation's aggression in Gaza has reached 49. On Monday evening, journalist Muhammad Al-Jaja also fell victim to an Israeli Occupation bombing that targeted his home in the Al-Nasr neighborhood of the Gaza Strip.

At least 39 journalists have been killed in just over one month of Israel’s war on Gaza – that’s more than double the number of fatalities in one and a half years of Russia-Ukraine war – in what has been described as “the deadliest month for journalists”.The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says 39 journalists, 34 of them Palestinians, have been killed since the latest conflict erupted on October 7. At least four Israelis and a Lebanese journalist are among those who have lost their lives in the war. The Paris-based press freedom watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), has put the death toll at 41.Recommended Stories list of 4 itemslist 1 of 4‘Every second in danger’: Gaza journalists race against deadlines and deathlist 2 of 4Gaza’s journalists: Reporting under bombardmentlist 3 of 4Reuters, Al Jazeera journalists ‘targeted’ in Lebanon strike: Press grouplist 4 of 4Is Israel’s Gaza war the deadliest conflict for children in modern times?end of listIsrael has also been accused of violating laws of war due to its indiscriminate bombardment of the Gaza Strip, killing more than 10,500 Palestinians, overwhelmingly civilians. The Hamas attack inside Israel on October 7 killed more than 1,400 people. How do journalist fatalities in the Israel-Gaza war compare with other conflicts? The Israel-Hamas war has seen more journalists killed in the first month of conflict than any other conflict since the CPJ first started collating statistics for journalists covering conflict in 1992.Christophe Deloire, RSF’s secretary-general, has described the toll as “shocking”, with the number likely to rise as the media watchdog continues to investigate reports of several other journalists either injured or missing. In the war between Russia and Ukraine, 17 journalists in total have been killed since the war began in 2022, the last reported killing being of French cameraman Frederic Leclerc-Imhoff who was killed in May.The US-led invasion of Iraq sparked a war that was particularly deadly for journalists – and set a trend that has continued. According to the CPJ, 283 journalists have been killed in Iraq since 2003. That includes 11 who were killed in the first month of the war, between March and April 2003.The war in Syria had zero journalist causalities in its first month of conflict in 2011, although the toll there has since increased dramatically to between 270 and 715, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.By comparison, 63 journalists were killed in the Vietnam War that lasted two decades, and a total of 69 killed in World War II (1939-45) – the bloodiest war the modern world has seen.Get instant alerts and updates based on your interests. Be the first to know when big stories happen. Are journalists meant to be protected in war zones?Yes. Intentionally targeting journalists, and civilians, is considered a war crime under international humanitarian law. Journalists are meant to be allowed to have the freedom and protection to perform their work without undue interference. But in the first weeks of the war, the Israeli army issued a statement to international news agencies, stating it could not guarantee the safety of their journalists operating in the Gaza Strip.“With their arbitrary air strikes, the Israeli armed forces are eliminating journalists one after the other without restraint, all while their unacceptable comments betray an open contempt for international humanitarian law,” Jonathan Dagher, the head of RSF’s Middle East desk, said in a statement.RSF has reported that 10 journalists in the Gaza Strip were killed while working, and the CPJ has said 48 media facilities in Gaza have been hit or destroyed. At least 10 others were killed in their homes with their families. RSF is investigating whether they were deliberately targeted because of their work. Al Jazeera could not gather details about the circumstances under which other journalists were killed.RSF submitted a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on October 31 alleging Israel had perpetrated war crimes against journalists in Gaza.“This rate of attrition among media workers has deeply shocked journalists the world over. No one can watch the growing tally of fallen colleagues without mounting horror,” said the secretary-general for the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Anthony Bellanger, in a statement on November 2.Israel has previously been accused of “silencing” journalists after it bombed a building housing Al Jazeera and Associated Press offices in 2021.How many journalists and their families have been killed?Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief Wael Dahdouh tragically lost four members of his own family in Israeli air strikes. “They take revenge on us through our children,” he stated upon finding his son’s lifeless body. His wife Amna, 15-year-old son Mahmoud and seven-year-old daughter Sham were killed, as was his 18-month-old grandson Adam following directives to leave northern Gaza for the south, only to come under Israel’s bombardment of the Nuseirat refuge camp where they were staying.“What happened is clear. This is a series of targeted attacks on children, women and civilians. I was just reporting from Yarmouk about such an attack, and the Israeli raids have targeted many areas, including Nuseirat.“We had our doubts that the Israeli occupation would not let these people go without punishing them. And sadly, that is what happened. This is the ‘safe’ area that the occupation army spoke of,” Dahdouh said.Mohamed Abu Hasira, a journalist for the Palestinian Authority-run news agency Wafa, was killed in an air strike on his home in Gaza along with 42 family members; and Mohamed Al Jaja, a consultant at Press-House Palestine, was killed in an air strike on his home along with his wife and two daughters in the Nasr neighbourhood in northern Gaza.Al Jazeera’s Gaza correspondent Youmna ElSayed said it was a “shock that we, journalists, who report to the world what’s happening around us, have to report the story of our colleagues or of our own families”.Two years ago, she along with others was given an hour to vacate al-Jalaa tower before Israel brought the building to the ground saying the building contained Hamas military assets. Israel never provided proof of its allegation. The building housed residential apartments and the offices of Al Jazeera and the Associated Press.Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said: “Those in Gaza, in particular, have paid, and continue to pay, an unprecedented toll and face exponential threats. Many have lost colleagues, families, and media facilities, and have fled seeking safety when there is no safe haven or exit.”How were the Israeli and Lebanese journalists killed? At least four Israeli journalists were also killed during the October 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel.CPJ said Shai Regev, editor for TMI and Ayelet Arnin from the Israel Broadcasting Corporation Kan were among the hundreds of other victims. Two more were killed in the kibbutz located just outside of Gaza. RSF said Roee Idan, a reporter for the Israeli newspaper YNet, was killed along with his family at the Kfar Aza kibbutz close to the fence with Gaza.Yaniv Zohar, an Israeli photographer working for the Hebrew-language daily newspaper Israel Hayom, was killed during a Hamas attack on the Nahal Oz kibbutz along with his wife and two daughters.Issam Abdallah, a Reuters journalist in Lebanon, was killed on October 13 by a missile strike from Israel. What are journalism bodies saying?Periods of communication blackouts have made it harder for journalists to document and report the situation in Gaza. RSF has called for “foreign journalists to be allowed to enter the territory, so they can work freely”.Israel has threatened journalists and often dubbed local journalists to be supporters of Hamas. It only allowed foreign journalists this week in Gaza embedded with the Israeli military. The International Federation for Journalists (IFJ) has issued a call, signed by 80 journalist groups, for Israeli authorities to take full responsibility for protecting journalists covering the conflict. “We demand an explicit commitment from the Israelis that their armed forces will take every effort to ensure that the grim tally of journalists who have died in this conflict rises no further. This is simply unacceptable, and the Israeli government will have to accept its responsibilities.”
