Father and son Salem Hasani Salem Abu Tayour (34) and Ahmed Salem Abu Tayour (10) were killed, along with one other person, by an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Abu Tayour residence in Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp on 29 April 2024. Several others were reported wounded. The identity of the third deceased was not found among local sources, though some sources reported that they were another member of the Abu Tayour family.
Salem, a journalist, worked for Al-Quds Al-Youm TV. A friend, Mohmmad Ahmed, implied that there were no words sufficient to describe the loss: “With what words can I mourn you?” “Indeed,” Mohmmad wrote, “life is short.” Salem’s body was reportedly brought to the Al-Awda Hospital. Multiple sources shared a photograph of Salem in a brown short-sleeved shirt. Mohammed al-Shanna included photographs of a memorial service held by Salem’s journalist peers, as they “bid farewell to our dear colleague.”
Sources initially reported that Salem’s elder son, Hamza, had been killed. However, comments shared by “Official Nusairat” clarified that Salem’s younger son, Ahmed, was actually the child killed. Photographs of Hamza – wearing a grey, TG-printed jacket – were mistakenly shared. Ahmed can be seen in a photograph shared by Fatma Jamal, where he stands outside in a red shirt and black trousers. Another photograph shows a younger Ahmed, smiling in a suit and bow-tie. The A. Zaid Abu Al-Qumsan Center praised Ahmed as a “distinguished” student, lauding him for having memorised the Quran. Included with the post was a photograph of Ahmed smiling widely as he held up a piece of school work.
Both Salem and Ahmed were matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health’s List of Fatalities in Gaza, first appearing in the fourth publication, released 30 April 2024.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all pointed to the Israeli military.
