On May 13, 2023, the settlement of Shokeda was reportedly hit with rocket fire at around 2pm. According to local news outlets, one civilian was killed and two were injured as a result. In their coverage, the Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel stated that the rockets were fired by forces affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
In its coverage of this incident, the Jerusalem post reported, “One Gaza resident was killed and another injured from rocket shrapnel in Shokeda on Saturday afternoon. (…) Another man was also moderately injured.” Those seriously wounded were reportedly ‘rushed into surgery shortly after arriving at the hospital”, described by local sources as Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, and one died on the operating table’. On the identity of the affected civilians, Emanuel Fabian, a military correspondent at the Times of Israel, stated on Twitter, “The two seriously wounded shepherds in the rocket attack near Shokeda are Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, while the third, who is moderately hurt, is a Bedouin Israeli, defense sources say.” Sources identified the man killed as ‘Abdullah Abu Jaba” or “Abdullah Jabril Abu Geba”, 35 year old, and “a father of six.’ a Palestinian laborer from the Gaza strip at work in Israel, and described the other civilian seriously injured as ‘his brother Hamed’, 40 year old. The third victim was described as a “guard” named “Owad Ibrahim Abu Sabila (39)”. On Social media, one source claimed he was “a resident of Abu Talul in the Negev, was saved after hiding under a tractor.”
