Airwars assessment
Before 7:11 AM on the morning of Saturday, October 7th, 2023, the village of Kafar Lata in the southern countryside of Idlib, Syria, was hit by a missile bombardment attributed either to the Syrian regime forces and/or the Russian military and/or Iranian forces, resulting in the death of two children, and the injury of another child, reportedly the sister of the two brothers who were killed.
The two children reported as killed by the Syrian Civil Defense in tweets and a report were said to be two brothers from the same family, whose sister was also injured. The brothers and their ages were detailed in a Facebook post by the Crime Documentation Office, which listed the casualties as follows: A child, Samir Ahmed Al-Satouf, 7 years old, as a death; the child, Taim Ahmed Al-Satouf, two years old, as another death; and the sister a child, Hoda Ahmed Al-Sattouf, is 4 years old, injured and with an infection.
According to tweets by @SyriaCivilDefence, a missile strike by Syrian regime forces resulted in the death of two children and the injury of a girl. In another tweet, a @SyriaCivilDefence spoke with the child Hoda who “did not know what had happened…and she did not know that she had lost her two brothers and that they had left without saying goodbye.” The Central referral and ambulance system of Syria posted that their teams had transported a children from Al Shami Hospital to University Hospital to conduct a brain CT and neurological and orthopedic consultation “after she was injured by multiple shrapnel wounds in the body as a result of artillery shelling on the village of Kafar Lata.”
The Khabar al Sareea Post, Agency News Sham’s Twitter/X account and Darat Azza Post all described artillery shells and missiles from Syrian regime forces as the cause of death for children in the village, emphasizing the public’s horrified reaction and the grief of the mother of the children killed and injured. Additional social media posts, including one by @Wolveri07681751 and another by @AgencyNewsSham, attribute the attacks to the Syrian regime, supported by Iran and Russia.
