Airwars assessment
Shortly before 12:20 PM on Tuesday, 7th November 2023, a civilian man was killed and five civilians, including at least two children, were injured, as a result of the alleged missile strikes perpetrated by the Syrian regime forces and/or the Russian military and/or Iranian military that hit a civilian car and civilian homes in the town of Taftanaz located east of Idlib, Syria.
The Syrian Civil Defense (also known as “White Helmets”) was the first to report the incident, alleging that regime forces attacked with guided missiles a civilian car and civilian homes in the town of Taftanaz. SCD shared the images where its staff members were wrapping the dead body in a brown cloth and extinguishing the fire.
The civilian who was killed was identified as a man named Abdulrahman Abdullah Haj Nimah. Facebook account Taftanaz shared a picture of the late Abdulrahman – a man in his 40s or 50s with gray hair and a beard dressed in a gray shirt and black trousers.
Two of the injured children were also identified as a four-year-old girl Haneen Tahan and a boy named Muhammad Al-Aswad. Posts on Facebook by Almarsad and tweets by the user @mzmgr941 contained images of the little injured girl Haneen, with blood covering her arm and face while she was being treated by first responders. Taftanaz Now Facebook account posted a graphic video showing the moment when a car was hit with a strike where an injured girl Haneed can be seen being taken away.
This bombing incident led to major damage to the car and a fire in one of the residential houses. The Syrian Civil Defense team reported that they transported the man’s dead body to a health center and extinguished as well a fire in one of the houses affected in this attack.
The images provided by the @Syrian Civil Defense on the platform Twitter/X showed the burnt car in the town of Taftanaz which had been the source of livelihood for the small restaurant’s owner.
Almohrar News Facebook account shared images of the munition that was allegedly used in the strike.
While Syrian Civil Defense and North Syrian News attributed the strike to the Syrian regime forces, Idlib countryside news, Twitter/X user @mzmgr941 and Omar Albaw held the Russian military accountable for the incident. Facebook user Al Marsad claimed that Iranian militia was also among the perpetrators. Therefore, Airwars has graded both Strike Status and Civilian Harm status as Contested.
The incident occured at approximately 12:20 pm local time.
