On the afternoon of Friday, 10th January 2025, a Turkish military drone allegedly hit the village of Qarjoukh in the countryside of Derik, al-Hasakah governorate, Syria. The attack reportedly killed one civilian man who had been previously displaced.
The Martyrs’ Families Council in Derik revealed the identity of the victim as Ahmed Ali, originally from the city of Serekaniye (Ras al-Ain), who had been displaced with his family to Derik following the 2019 Turkish occupation of his hometown. The Council issued a statement condemning the continued Turkish bombardments on northern and eastern Syria and the silence of international powers, calling on human rights organizations and the international community to exert pressure to stop such attacks.
Hawar News and ANHA news on Facebook shared an image of the late Ali, who was a middle-aged man dressed in a black sweater, a black jacket and jeans, posing in an agricultural field.
Hawar News, ANHA, Ronahi TV, Ein Issa News and several local Facebook pages confirmed the identity of Ahmed Ali and reported the details of the strike. The Violations Documentation Center also documented his death in Qarjoukh.
Where sources identified the perpetrator, all attributed responsibility to the Turkish military.
