Around 4 PM on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, an elderly woman died and at least seven Kurdish civilians, including a woman and four children, were reportedly injured by an artillery attack on a civilian bus carrying passengers and on civilian homes near the village of Kabashin in the Sherawa District, located in the western countryside of Aleppo, Syria, reportedly perpetrated by Syrian regime forces and/or Syrian Democratic forces.

At 4:08 PM the Syrian Civil Defense reported the injury of seven civilians, including a woman and four children, as a result of of bombing originating from areas under the joint control of the Syrian regime forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces. The next day at 9:29 AM the Syrian Civil Defense updated the information, reporting on the death of one woman and the injury of six civilians, including four children and one seriously injured man.

Facebook user Rohat M Ebrahim reported that mortar shells fell on a public passenger bus carrying six people, leading to death and injuries. He also provided the names and ages of some of the victims. Human rights activist Ibrahim Sheikho also provided details on the victims in his Facebook post. Despite the sources reported on the injury of four children, Airwars researchers managed to identify the names of only three children.

Initial reports indicated that the victims were members of a single family, with one person in serious condition. One of the victims, Arifa Haidar Jammo, an elderly woman of 70 years,  succumbed to her injuries. Arifa had a fair complexion, a long nose, thin lips, reddish hair, and small black eyes. In a photo shared by sources, she was seen wearing a black and white printed dress with a black scarf on her head. She died the same day as the attack after being treated at a hospital in Afrin.

Another victim, Haider Abdo, an 80-year-old man with a dark complexion, black eyes, and gray hair and mustache, was also injured. A photo showed him with his head bandaged, wearing jeans and a beige sweater, lying on a stretcher. His property also suffered significant damage.

Among the injured was Arifa Haider, a girl aged either 6 or 11 years (according to different sources), with a dark complexion, black eyes, and short light brown curly hair. In one photo, she is seen wearing printed black leggings and a red sweater, with her left leg bandaged. Another image shows her sleeping.

Abdin Jumar Haider, a four-year-old boy with a dark complexion, black eyes, and short brown straight hair, was also injured. He was seen in a hospital, wearing a black jacket with red detailing.

Other identified victims included a two-year-old boy Amer Juma Haider, a 28-year-old man Juma Haider, and a 20-year-old woman Rosheen Hassan, who was reportedly Juma’s wife.

Photos shared by Rohat M Ebrahim also depicted an unidentified boy (who can be Abdin Haider) with short brown hair, wearing jeans and a brown striped sweater, lying on a stretcher. Additionally, another injured young man named Nour El-Din Abdo Kousa according to the inscription on his picture, reportedly 21 years old, was shown with a dark complexion, short black hair, a long nose, and a small mustache, wearing a dark blue sweater, a camouflage jacket, and a black wristwatch. The identity of these victims, however, remains inconsistent with the information and names listed in official reports.

According to most sources, the bombing hit a civilian bus reportedly carrying six people at the time of the attack. But one source, Ribaz News, reported that the attack was also on the home of Arifa Haider Jammo. The White Helmets posted a photo of the street and sidewalks showing traces of the explosion. A video shared by Ribaz News and Ibrahim Sheikho on Facebook also depicted the destruction of the house of Haider Abdo, with the house’s walls collapsed and significant debris scattered, alongside the bus, which had broken windows and multiple dents. Furthermore, Twitter user @syrianewsag posted a photo showing dust clouds in the air following the shelling.

Where sources identified the belligerent, most sources attributed the strike to the Syrian regime forces. However, the area of the attack was reportedly under joint control of regime forces and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, so the SDF was also a suspected belligerent in this incident.
