Airwars assessment
Six civilians and five militants were killed after an alleged Israeli airstrike was reported in Tyre Filseh, Lebanon, on September 23, 2024.
According to a post from Ali Sarhan, the dead included Ali Hussein Hamoudi, Hussein Ahmed Issa, Ali Ahmed Arzouni, Ali Hassan Shalhoub, Mohammad Abbas Issa, Youssef Mohammad Mazeh, Jawad Hassan Mazeh, Youssef Mazeh, Mohammad Ali Issa, Abdul Hussein Ayyad, and Dhu al-Fiqar al-Jubouri.
Dhu al-Fiqar al-Jubouri was described as a “mujahid leader” in a poster held at a funeral procession, while Jawad Hassan Mazeh, Hussein Ahmed Issa, Mohammad Abbas Issa, and Abdul Hussein Ayyad were described by sources online as “mujahideen” with depictions on Hezbollah militant ‘martyr’ posters. As such, these individuals have not been included in Airwars civilian casualty count.
A post by Narjas mourned the loss of Ali Hassan Shalhoub, expressing sorrow over his early death and commemorating his qualities. Narjas described Ali as intelligent and quick, stating that he was the first to follow his grandfather Sheikh Abbas Harb into death. Ali Hassan Shalhoub is pictured in an Islamic Health Authority uniform, which is a civil defense group that is associated with Hezbollah. While Hezbollah operates an active militant wing, their political presence is also deeply enmeshed within the state, providing social and organisational services, primarily in the Shia’a majority areas in Southern Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut. With this context in mind, and given that there are no indications of militant activities, the presence of the Islamic Health Authority has not been used to determine if an individual or community is affiliated with Hezbollah’s armed wing, therefore Ali Hassan Shalhoub has been counted as a civilian unless further information comes to light.
Wasat posted a video capturing the immediate aftermath of the airstrike, focusing on militant Dhu al-Fiqar al-Jubouri, an Iraqi citizen aged 22. According to the post, he was standing at the entrance of his home with friends when a missile struck them. Journalist Amin Nasser posted an image of himself with Amal Movement MP Qablan Qablan and Lebanese Minister of Labor Mustafa Bayram at the funeral for Dhu. In an image posted by Haider Mahmoud Al-Aqabi, Dhu is seen holding a weapon – the same image was used on a banner describing him as a “mujahid leader”.
@balaghmedialb announced the funeral arrangements for Jawad Hassan Mazeh and Hussein Ahmed Issa, identifying both as “mujahideen”, with both depicted in uniform in a martyr poster with Hezbollah logos. Facebook user Fatima Miselmani Kasfe posted a similar image of Mohammad Issa and Abdul Hussein Ayyad, also listing the two as “mujahid”, with both wearing uniform appearing to belong to the militant wing of Hezbollah. On September 25, 2024, in a social media post, Hosayin shared images likely depicting Jawad Mazeh and and Muhammad and Hussein Issa, with one of the men wearing scouts uniform.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
