On September 5th, 2024, a drone strike against a truck at the Al-Ghabra roundabout in Al-Boukmal, Deir Ezzor Governorate, killed a child and a militant, and injured between four and fifteen more people, including at least two children. The drone has been alleged to be American or Israeli by some sources, while others have not attributed a belligerent in their reports.
The drone strike reportedly killed a thirteen year old child named Khaled Ali Hussein Al Eid. A photo posted by the Deir Ezzor News Network Facebook Account showed Khaled in a white thobe, smiling at the camera. Naher Media reported that the strike also injured eleven year old Murad Hussein al-Abd, ice cream mill owner Rakan Ahmed Al-Mazid and two other unnamed civilians from the Al Tawaf family. A post from Al-Hasakah National 39 identified three children as injured from the strike while Al Arabiya reported two injuries to children. Fjaer reported that members of the Mashahda tribe were wounded while multiple sources quoted Russian “RIA Novosti” agency which put the injury toll at 15.
The strike also killed a young man named Saad Khalifa al-Ghani. According to Al Sharqiya, al-Ghani was a member of the 47th Regiment Militia which is affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and was killed while passing by on his motorcycle. Al Sharqiya reported that the strike was aimed at a truck reportedly carrying weapons, an allegation also made by Twitter/X accounts @guy_telaviv and @abualisar18. Al Arabiya reported that the spokesman for the Ein al-Furat Network told Al Arabiya that the airstrike was targeting the headquarters of the 47th Regiment Militia in Al Boukmal, while the Deir Ezzor News Network reports that the strike hit a refrigerator truck. According to Naher Media, “the (refrigerator) truck stopped near the roundabout, and its driver went down to a restaurant, and the plane surprised him by targeting his truck, leaving a number of dead and wounded, and destruction in the main street and surrounding shops.”
“Injuries among the Iranian militia” were also reported by Sham News, while Al Arabiya specified “five members” were injured.
Al Arabiya reported that the belligerent behind the strike was unknown. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that the drone was of unknown origin. Twitter account @guy_telaviv claimed that Israeli correspondents reported that Israel was responsible for the strike “carrying equipment for…the Lebanese Hezbollah…”.
