On the morning of Monday, June 16, 2025, at least four elderly civilians, including three women, were killed and 92 civilians were injured, including a woman, in an alleged Iranian airstrike on a residential building in Petah Tikva, Israel. The victims were named as Ivette Shmilovitz, Yaakov Belo, Hadassah Belo, and Daisy Yitzhaki. Twitter/X account @Gloz111 reported the fifth victim, but the identity remains unknown.

According to the report by CNS News, in addition to those killed, the MDA said paramedics had evacuated another 92 wounded people to hospitals, including a 30-year-old woman in serious condition, while rescuers were still searching for residents trapped beneath the rubble of their homes. “When we arrived at the scene of the rocket strike, we saw massive destruction,” said Dr. Gal Rosen, a paramedic with MDA who said he had rescued a four-day-old baby as fires blazed from the building.

ABC News footage of the strike shows a fireball hitting a residential building in the early hours of June 16. Smoke rises from the apartments after it is struck. That day, Ynet News reported that “in Petah Tikva, four people were killed after an Iranian missile struck a residential tower. Despite taking shelter in a fortified room, three elderly residents—two women and one man in their 70s—were fatally injured when the missile made a direct hit.”

On June 23, The Times of Israel reported that “Holocaust survivor…Ivette Shmilovitz, 95, was one of four people killed in the missile strike on the central Israeli city last Monday. The other victims of the attack were named as Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, both 77, and Daisy Yitzhaki, 85.” According to the newspaper, “[Ivette] Shmilovitz was in a building next to the one that was directly hit and was killed by the shockwave.” Meanwhile, Daisy “was on the floor above where the missile hit, but not in her safe room. Her caregiver was also injured in the impact.” The article features photos of the victims.

Ynet News reported that Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, “were two of the four people killed Monday when an Iranian ballistic missile struck the wall separating two safe rooms in the building, leaving no chance for survival despite the reinforced structure.”

On Facebook, Orin Belo shared photos of his parents and wrote: “With great sorrow and total shock, we announce the murder of our beloved father and mother, Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, from a direct missile hit to their home.” On July 15, he posted additional photos of his parents’ funeral. Twitter/X account @IsraelinNewYork wrote that they were “a beautiful couple dedicated to each other and their family.”

Photos and videos from Petah Tikva showed a high-rise residential building with several floors blackened and visibly blown outward, with concrete and debris dangling from the blast site.

According to Associated Press, four complexes housing hundreds of families were impacted by the missile, which struck the side of one of the buildings and tore off the exterior. Windows and doors were blown off, with few cars in the vicinity unscathed.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Iranian forces.

The dead in Petah Tikva in the apartment tower were inside a bomb shelter. Don't let them sell you lies - no bomb shelter can withstand such a missile strike, only an underground shelter. The bomb shelter can help against the impact. If the outer wall!!!! of the bomb shelter is hit by a missile with a warhead of half a ton or more, it will crash on those inside. Period.

Nastia Borik, 7, who came to Israel from Ukraine to receive life-saving leukemia treatment, was murdered alongside her mother, grandmother, and two young cousins. Dani Avraham, 59, was a devoted father of two who was always willing to help others. Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, both aged 77, were a beautiful couple dedicated to each other and their family. Igor Fradkin, 50, leaves behind a grieving wife and five children. Uri Levy, 58, was a kind-hearted and genuine friend to all who knew him. Daisy Yitzhaki, 85, was a beloved pillar of her community. Tel Aviv, Israel — Israel attacked Iranian state television Monday and warned hundreds of thousands of people in the middle of Iran's capital, Tehran, to evacuate the city. The strike came after Iran fired another wave of missiles at Israel, which killed at least eight civilians, according to the Israeli military. The developments came on the fourth day of open warfare between the regional foes, which has shown no signs of slowing down.Israel's warning affected up to 330,000 people in a part of central Tehran that includes the country's state TV and police headquarters, as well as three large hospitals, including one owned by Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. President Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Monday evening that Iran "should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign," adding: "Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!""What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON," Mr. Trump wrote. Mr. Trump addressed several questions about Iran earlier in the day while attending the G7 summit in Canada, saying he's "spoken with everybody" and thinks Iran "basically is at the negotiating table. They want to make a deal."The G7 leaders issued a statement late Monday about the hostilities between Israel and Iran. Mr. Trump signed the statement, though U.S. officials had said earlier he didn't plan to.It reads in part that they "affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza."In addition, the statement said, "We will remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability." Press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday night said Mr. Trump would cut short his trip to Canada and fly back to Washington, D.C., late Monday, citing "what's going on in the Middle East."Shortly after Air Force One took off, the president said in a post on his Truth Social platform that, "Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a "cease fire" between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!"The president had previously said Iranian leaders would "like to talk," but they had already had 60 days to reach an agreement on their nuclear ambitions and failed to do so before an Israeli aerial assault began four days ago. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country's strikes have set Iran's nuclear program back a "very, very long time."Israel strikes Iran state-run TV network An hour after Israel's warning on Monday, the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, an Iranian state-run television network, stopped a live broadcast when an explosion occurred. Anchor Sahar Emami was seen rushing off camera as the screen behind her cuts out and debris and smoke fill the studio. The broadcast quickly switched to prerecorded programs.Soon, Emami came back live from another studio and was seen speaking with another anchor. She said that "bodies of reporters" were at the site of the initial broadcast, and images showed smoke and flames in the sky.CBS News' Seyed Bathaei in Tehran reported hearing antiaircraft weapons firing on Monday. He said many people were trying to flee the city, causing long traffic jams on major thoroughfares. He said state TV remained on the air, but the network's headquarters appeared to be on fire. Bathaei estimated that as many as 80% to 90% of businesses in the capital were closed on Monday.Israel's defense minister took credit for the attack on the television studio.  Smoke rises after a reported Israeli strike on a building used by Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, part of Iran's state TV broadcaster, on June 16, 2025, in Tehran, Iran. Stringer/Getty Images Iran announced it had launched some 100 missiles and vowed further retaliation for Israel's sweeping attacks on its military and nuclear infrastructure, which Tehran said have killed at least 224 people in the country since Friday. U.S. State Department raises Israel travel advisory to highest levelNear the American Consulate in Tel Aviv, one missile caused minor damage, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee said Monday in a post on social media. He said no American personnel were injured. Later in the day, the State Department raised its travel advisory for Israel to the highest level and warned U.S. citizens not to travel to the country. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he was postponing a planned address to Israel's parliament in Jerusalem later this month.Hegseth says he "directed the deployment of additional capabilities" to the regionEarly Monday evening, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X that he "directed the deployment of additional capabilities to the United States Central Command Area of Responsibility" over the weekend, adding: "Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region."The U.S. is sending multiple refueling aircraft to preposition in Europe to be closer to the Middle East as part of providing options for the administration, U.S. officials told CBS News. The aircraft could support defensive operations by keeping fighter jets that are used to intercept incoming drones aloft, but those same refueling aircraft could support offensive operations if Iran were to strike U.S. troop locations in the Middle East. The USS Nimitz carrier strike group is also headed to the Middle East, according to U.S. officials, which, when it arrives, would give the U.S. two carrier strike groups in range of Iran.Israel says Iranian missiles have killed at least 24, injured hundreds moreIsrael said Iranian missiles had killed a total of 24 people and wounded some 500 others by Monday morning, and the Israel Defense Forces accused Tehran of deliberately targeting civilians with its strikes. "We are hitting military targets and capabilities designed to destroy the State of Israel, and they are firing at population centers with the aim of hitting civilians," an IDF spokesperson said Monday morning. Emergency personnel work at site in Tel Aviv after missiles were launched from Iran on June 16, 2025. Ronen Zvulun / REUTERS In response, "50 fighter jets and aircraft carried out strikes and destroyed over 120 surface-to-surface missile launchers" in Iran, IDF spokesman Big. Gen. Effie Defrin said in a televised statement on Monday. He said Iran's Quds Force, an elite arm of its Revolutionary Guard that conducts military and intelligence operations outside Iran, was the primary target, and that the strikes had destroyed "one-third of the surface-to-surface missile launchers possessed by the Iranian regime." Defrin also said Israel's air force had established "full aerial superiority" over the Iranian capital, Tehran.Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Monday that Tehran's residents would "pay the price" for Iranian strikes on Israeli civilians, according to the French news agency AFP.The fighting led to the cancellation of talks on Iran's nuclear program slated for Sunday between the U.S. and Iran.Separately, three U.S. officials told CBS News on Sunday that Mr. Trump had opposed a recent Israeli plan to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Israelis had the opportunity to assassinate Khamenei, and Mr. Trump conveyed to Netanyahu that it wasn't a good idea, one U.S. official told CBS News. They said the conversation between Netanyahu and Mr. Trump came since Israel launched its massive attack on Iran last week. Netanyahu's office has rejected the assertion as fake.Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department had issued a directive to all American embassies and consular posts to, "at their discretion," relay or reiterate to their host governments that the United States "is not involved in Israel's unilateral action against targets in Iran and did not provide tanker support," a source familiar with its contents told CBS News. Explosions rock Tel Aviv early Monday morningPowerful explosions, likely from Israel's defense systems intercepting Iranian missiles, rocked Tel Aviv shortly before dawn on Monday, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky over the coastal city. Authorities in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva said Iranian missiles had hit a residential building there, charring concrete walls, shattering windows and ripping the walls off multiple apartments. Residents of damaged buildings are evacuated after ballistic missiles fired from Iran struck parts of Petah Tikva, Israel, on June 16, 2025. Mostafaf Alkharouf / Anadolu via Getty Images The Israeli Magen David Adom emergency service reported that two women and two men — all in their 70s — and one other person were killed in the wave of missile attacks that struck four sites in central Israel."We clearly see that our civilians are being targeted," Israeli police spokesman Dean Elsdunne said outside the bombed-out building in Petah Tikva. "And this is just one scene. We have other sites like this near the coast, in the south."Petah Tikva resident Yoram Suki rushed with his family to a shelter after hearing an air raid alert and emerged after it was over to find his apartment destroyed."Thank God we were OK," the 60-year-old said.Despite losing his home, he urged Netanyahu to keep up the attacks on Iran. "It's totally worth it," he said. "This is for the sake of our children and grandchildren."In addition to those killed, the MDA said paramedics had evacuated another 92 wounded people to hospitals, including a 30-year-old woman in serious condition, while rescuers were still searching for residents trapped beneath the rubble of their homes."When we arrived at the scene of the rocket strike, we saw massive destruction," said Dr. Gal Rosen, a paramedic with MDA who said he had rescued a 4-day-old baby as fires blazed from the building.During an earlier barrage of Iranian missiles on central Israel on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran would stop its strikes if Israel did the same. But after a day of intense Israeli aerial attacks that extended to targets beyond military installations to hit oil refineries and government buildings, the Revolutionary Guard struck a hard line on Monday, vowing that further rounds of strikes would be "more forceful, severe, precise and destructive than previous ones."Health authorities also reported that 1,277 were wounded in Iran, without distinguishing between military officials and civilians.Rights groups, including the Washington-based Iranian advocacy group Human Rights Activists, have suggested the Iranian government's death toll is a significant undercount. Human Rights Activists says it has documented more than 400 people killed, among them 197 civilians.  Israel argues that its assault on Iran's top military leaders, uranium enrichment sites and nuclear scientists was necessary to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, which Netanyahu claimed Iran was "racing" toward.Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is peaceful, and the U.S. and others have assessed that Tehran has not pursued a nuclear weapon since 2003.But Iran has enriched ever-larger stockpiles of uranium to near weapons-grade levels in recent years and was believed to have the capacity to develop multiple weapons within months if it chose to do so.  War Iran Israel Nuclear Weapons Missile Launch Middle East Benjamin Netanyahu

“People want to buy lottery tickets with me because I survived two missile strikes.” A first ballistic missile hit the home of Shifra Dayan, 62, in Rishon Lezion at the start of the war with Iran. After her home was destroyed, she moved to her son’s house in Petah Tikva, but just two days later, another missile destroyed his home. “To feel it twice, once in my home and once in my son’s, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.” Despite everything, Shifra remains positive: “Now people want to play the lottery with me.” Shifra is the embodiment of Israeli resilience.

A Holocaust survivor was killed by an Iranian missile last week in Petah Tikva. Ivette Shmilovitz, 95, whose name was released for publication on Monday, was one of four people killed in the missile strike on the central Israeli city last Monday. Shmilovitz is survived by three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Segula Cemetery. The other victims of the attack were named as Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, both 77, and Daisy Yitzhaki, 85. Shmilovitz was in a building next to the one that was directly hit and was killed by the shockwave. Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories By signing up, you agree to the terms Yaakov and Hadassah Belo were sheltering in their safe room when a missile with a large explosive warhead slammed into their 20-story apartment building, impacting a wall right between two safe rooms, which were unable to withstand the intensity of the blast. An apartment building in Petah Tikvah, the site of a direct hit from an Iranian missile following a deadly overnight attack, June 16, 2025 (Stav Levaton/Times of Israel) Yitzhaki was on the floor above where the missile hit, but not in her safe room. Her caregiver was also injured in the impact, according to Ynet. Israeli authorities say reinforced rooms located inside apartments are suitable protective spaces in case of attack, though they are largely designed to protect against shrapnel and shock waves, and, unlike underground bunkers used for public shelters, may not stand up to a direct impact of heavy explosives. According to officials, reinforced rooms have saved countless lives in the missile barrages from Iran thus far. So far, Iran’s missile attacks on Israel, which have included some 550 ballistic missiles and around 1,00 drones, have killed 24 people and wounded thousands in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. Some of the missiles have hit apartment buildings, a university and a hospital, causing heavy damage. Top (L-R): Yaakov and Hadassah Belo, Uri Levy; Bottom (L-R): Daisy Yitzhaki, Dani Avraham, Igor Fradkin. All were killed in Iranian ballistic missile strikes on Petah Tikva and Haifa on June 16, 2025. (Social media, used in accordance with Clause 27a of the Copyright Law) The strikes have come in retaliation to Israel’s sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program. Israel says the campaign is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state. Iran, which avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction, has consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, has obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. Israel says Iran has recently taken steps toward weaponization. You appreciate our journalism We’re really pleased that you’ve read 4 Times of Israel articles in the past month. Two of the four people killed in Petah Tikva were sheltering in a protected space in their home, Army Radio reports, citing an initial investigation. According to the report, the missile, carrying a large explosive payload, impacted a wall right between two reinforced rooms, which were unable to withstand the intensity of the blast. Israeli authorities say reinforced rooms located inside apartments are suitable protective spaces in case of attack, though they are largely designed to protect against shrapnel, and unlike underground bunkers used for public shelters, cannot necessarily stand up to a direct impact of heavy explosives. According to officials, reinforced rooms have saved countless lives in the missile barrages from Iran thus far. The two other fatalities were reportedly outside of protective spaces when the missile struck. One person was on the floor above where the missile hit and the other was in a neighboring building hit by the blast wave, Army Radio reports. There is no confirmation of the report. According to an initial investigation by the IDF’s Home Front Command, the heavy missile struck the wall separating two safe rooms in the building, leaving no chance for survival despite the reinforced structure.2 View gallery Yaakov and Dassi Belu (Photo: via Facebook)City officials said hundreds of residents in the neighborhood were evacuated. The IDF explained that safe rooms are built to absorb shockwaves and shrapnel from missiles, not direct hits from long-range ballistic projectiles like those fired from Iran. Nonetheless, the military stressed that safe rooms remain the safest and most effective form of protection for civilians. The Home Front Command reiterated that while direct hits are extremely rare, safe rooms are designed to withstand the far more common threats of fragments and blast waves. In this case, residents in adjacent safe rooms—on floors above and below the impact site—were unharmed.liveFootage of the missile hit in Petah Tikva (Video: Lian Katav)2 View gallery Scene of the missile hit in Petah Tikva (Photo: REUTERS/Itay Cohen )“The impact in Petah Tikva was an extraordinary breach of protective standards,” a Home Front Command spokesperson said. “The priority should always be to enter a standard protected space. If that’s not available, a stairwell is preferable.”The IDF emphasized that while air defense systems cannot provide absolute protection, they are calibrated to prioritize threats aimed at population centers and strategic sites.

Israel was striking military sites in Iran and the four-day-old conflict showed no sign of slowing.VideoBlack smoke billowed from the Iranian state TV headquarters after an Israeli strike hit the building on Monday. The attack comes as the fighting between Israel and Iran show no signs of slowing down.CreditCredit...Getty Images/Getty ImagesJune 16, 2025Iranian strikes on populated areas of Israel overnight killed at least eight people, the local authorities said on Monday, as Israel’s military attacked military sites in Iran and the four-day-old conflict between the Middle East’s two most powerful militaries showed no sign of slowing.Four of the people died when a missile hit a residential block in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva, and three more in Haifa, the local authorities said. An 80-year-old man died when his home collapsed as a result of a shock wave from a strike in Bnei Brak, a city east of Tel Aviv.Sigal Kovalski, 47, who lives in Petah Tikva, said that she and her family heard an explosion and saw dust trickling into the room where they were sheltering. When they emerged, they found their apartment completely ruined.“The windows were broken, the floor was covered with shattered glass and the furniture was in pieces,” she said.Photos and videos from Petah Tikva showed a high-rise residential building with several floors blackened and visibly blown outward, with concrete and debris dangling from the blast site.Nearly 100 people were injured across central Israel on Monday, including in Haifa and Tel Aviv, and search and rescue operations were continuing, according to Magen David Adom, the national emergency service.Iranian missiles also hit Israel’s largest oil refinery, in Haifa Bay in northern Israel, according to footage verified by The New York Times. Firefighters were trying to contain a blaze ignited by the strike and to rescue people trapped in the area, said Tal Volvovitch, a spokeswoman for the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority. The attacks followed a day of strikes on multiple locations in Iran and Israel, including a rare daytime Israeli air raid on Tehran that caused casualties and damage to buildings and infrastructure. Internet traffic from Iran dropped significantly, according to NetBlocks, an internet monitoring group. That left many Iranians unable to contact emergency services or connect with the outside world. The fighting, which began on Friday with an Israeli attack on Iran, has been the fiercest and most prolonged between Israel and Iran in decades. It has stoked fears of a wider regional conflict that could draw in the United States and other powers. The Israeli strikes have killed at least 224 people in Iran, according to the country’s health ministry. Several top Iranian security chiefs are among the dead, and more than 1,400 people have been injured. In Israel, at least 21 people have been killed in Iran’s retaliatory barrages since Friday, according to the national emergency service.Natan Odenheimer is a Times reporter in Jerusalem, covering Israeli and Palestinian affairs.Related ContentAdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENT
