Multiple sources corroborated that two to three alleged Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) members were killed by a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and International Coalition counter-terrorism operation in the early hours of January 12th 2023 in the village of Al Tawamiya, located in north-eastern Deir Ezzor. There are currently no reports of civilian harm or death.

Furat Sy News reported that the SDF were on-the-ground whilst the International Coalition provided helicopters that surrounded the suspected residence, demanding the surrender of the ISIS members. The raided residence is thought to have been inhabited by displaced persons and Naher Media specified that the inhabitants were from the al-Mashada clan from the city of Al-Bukamal, which is under the control of the Iranian militias.

Most sources report the death of two militants, whilst Syrian media organization Sada Al Sharqieh reported three. Levant24 has named one of the two individuals as Abu Yusuf al-Bukamali.

Naher Media reported that the “exchanges of light weapons and bombs erupted” between the SDF and ISIS militants, but did not mention other civilian or militant injuries beyond the two noted deaths.

The majority of sources identified the operation as a joint operation between the SDF and the Coalition. However, the Coalition Combined Special Operations in the Levant (@SOJTF_LEVANT) tweeted that the “#SDF killed two #ISIS members and recovered loaded pistols during a raid in #DeirezZor, #Syria” without acknowledging Coalition involvement.
