One Israeli civilian was killed and as many as seven injured when alleged Hamas militants fired a rocket struck the city of Ashkelon southern Israel on the 11th May, 2021, according to local reports.

Nella Gurevitz (between 52 and 57 years old) was killed and her husband injured, when a rocket reportedly fired by Hamas struck their apartment according to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Israeli media outlet Ynet named Mrs Gurevitz husband as Gregory, and described his injuries as light.

BelarusFeed reported that Nella and her husband were from Belarus and “the mayor’s office also clarified that Nella Gurevich was 57 years old and that the couple immigrated to Israel in 1990. The journalist of the Israel Segodnya newspaper contacted the neighbours of the family, who said that the couple was always friendly with them, but led a rather secluded life, the spouses did not have children. They confirmed that the couple came to Israel from Belarus.”

“I know Nellie as a very sympathetic person, she always tried to support me and other people. We shared interests in music, we both once graduated from a music school. It was a shock for me to find out that she was dead, I will miss her,” said Nella’s friend Anna Litrovnik.

As many as five other people were lightly injured by shrapnel, according to Haaretz.

Al-Qassam Brigades confirmed they carried out the strikes that resulted in casualties, posting in their Telegram channel that “A while ago, Al-Qassam Brigades bombarded occupied Ashkelon with a salvo of S40 missiles” and a bit later “The occupation officially acknowledges the killing of 2 of its [settlers] as a result of the recent Qassam bombing of Ashkelon.”

On the ninth day of Operation "Guardian of the Walls," the death toll on the Israeli side rose to 13. In Ashkelon, Suhomya Santosh and Nela Gurevich died on Tuesday in two separate incidents - from rocket strikes. In Rishon LeZion, Leah Yom Tov died on the same day, also from a rocket strike. Her neighbor Ilana Cohen died when she was shot in the heart after being hit by a rocket. On Wednesday morning, residents of the unrecognized village of Dahmesh near Lod, Khalil Awad and his daughter Nadine, died. Sergeant Omar Tabib was hit that day by an anti-tank missile fired from the Gaza border, and five-year-old Ido Avigal was killed in a barrage fired in the evening in Sderot. On Thursday, Miriam Aryeh from Moshav Shtolim died on her way to the military hospital, and on Friday, Orly Liron, from Moshav Netaim, who was injured on the way to the military hospital, passed away. On Saturday, a resident of Ramat Gan was killed from a direct hit in his home. On Tuesday, two workers from Thailand were killed in a mortar attack. Santosh, 32, was caring for a woman in a building damaged by gunfire in Ashkelon. She left behind a nine-year-old child who lives in India. The woman she cared for was hospitalized in serious condition. Santosh had worked in Israel for the past eight years. Gurevich was killed by a rocket strike on her residential building in Ashkelon. She left behind her husband, Gregory, who was slightly injured in the shooting. Yom Tov was killed in a rocket explosion in Rishon LeZion. Her sons spoke of "a woman full of joy for life, who always put others before herself. We talked to her all the time, she was a woman of love, of help, of great giving." She left behind two children and five grandchildren. The children spoke about the house that was hit: "We've been here in this house since we were 12-13, full of memories. Our children feel part of this house. Right now the house is upside down, full of glass, chaos." Leah's neighbor Yom Tov, who was also killed by a rocket strike. Cohen was heartbroken after her house was hit by a rocket. Khalil and his daughter were killed by a direct hit by a rocket in the unrecognized village of Dahmesh near Lod. Their relatives and residents of the village, which has no official status, said that they had previously asked to build shelters there - but the Central District Planning and Building Committee did not allow this. As a result, the victims had no way to evacuate to a protected area that might have saved their lives. According to testimonies from the scene, the girl was in her room inside the house at the time of the shooting - while her father was standing at the entrance to the house. Tabib, a Nahal fighter, was killed by an anti-tank missile on the border with the Gaza Strip. Omer was supposed to be discharged from the army in a month. He left behind his parents and a 15-year-old brother. "Omer was a lovely, amazing boy, and was supposed to be discharged in a month," said his uncle. "Unfortunately, he didn't make it. He was a beloved boy, he wanted to contribute to the country, a salt of the earth." The uncle said that his nephew "had ambitions after he was discharged. He wanted to contribute, he wanted to study or work in the Ministry of Defense, to do something with the fact that he was a combat soldier." Avigal was critically injured by a rocket strike at his home in Sderot, and died in the hospital. His mother Shani was seriously injured. His sister Tahel, seven, was slightly injured, and his cousin Noam Abergil and his mother Noam were also injured in the rocket. Ido was in the military, but the rocket penetrated him. His father: "I feel like I missed out, I would have liked more time with Ido. To all the parents - be with the children, spend more time with them. This is the most important thing. We mourn the death of our son, and hope that he will be the last victim and that no parent will have to bury a child. This is a great disaster for us, we will see how we continue from here on." Liron fell on her way to the emergency room when an alarm sounded in the moshav in the Gan Raveh Regional Council. After two days in which doctors fought for her life, they were forced to declare her dead. Her partner and father of Barry, her five-year-old son: "He asked me if mom would come back. I told him no. He hugged me and we both cried. It is a pain that is difficult to understand. Sometimes I hope that I would have died and someone else would have had to deal with this pain." Liron was a teacher and educator at the Municipal School H in Tel Aviv. Franco was killed in a missile strike in Ramat Gan. His sister Rivka said that he was disabled with many medical problems, including severe pain in his legs that may have prevented him from running to the shelter. "He was alone, without a wife, without children, no one cared what he was dealing with – not welfare, not the municipality, they let him live in this musty place instead of providing him with a proper home. My heart aches for him, he was so lonely, and now people remember him after he was killed." Killed by a mortar shell in a packing house in the Eshkol Regional Council.

Israeli casualties in the round of fighting against the Gaza Strip in Operation "Guardian of the Walls": Two women residents of Ashkelon were killed at noon (Tuesday) from direct rocket hits on a high-rise building and a private home in the heaviest barrage launched from Gaza since the start of the operation. In addition, an elderly woman in her 80s was injured in the heavy barrage, whose condition is described as critical, and several other people were slightly injured. Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon has treated 70 casualties so far, one of whom is described as critical. Assuta Hospital in Ashdod has treated 13 casualties so far, all in minor condition. Hamas said that they launched 137 rockets into the Gaza Strip, Ashkelon, and Ashdod within five minutes, in what they called "the largest barrage" - and the barrages continued afterward. Following a targeted warning of additional barrages being launched toward Ashkelon, an IDF spokesman instructed the city's residents to remain in their barracks. After an hour and a half, the directive was lifted. For the first time since the beginning of the escalation, an alarm was also activated in Ashdod, where direct hits were reported in two houses. In Ashkelon, eight direct hits were found, including in a damaged school. Several of the injured were hit by glass fragments and some while running to the hospital. One of the injured is a child. Two women were killed by direct rocket hits in two arenas in Ashkelon. After an hour and a half: Ashkelon residents were allowed to leave the hospital. The head of the Islamic Jihad special rocket unit Hamas: "We launched 137 rockets in 5 minutes at Ashkelon"; Two houses hit in Ashdod Islamic Jihad: "Israel killed two senior military officers in an airstrike" Hamas: "Dead and missing in Israeli attack on a target in the Gaza Strip where army operatives were" Chief of Staff orders reinforcement of Gaza Division with forces from infantry and armor brigades Gantz approves mobilization of approximately 5,000 reserve soldiers IDF attacks apartment in a multi-story building in western Gaza from the air Missiles to the south: Alerts in the envelope, volleys and interceptions over Ashkelon IDF attacks anti-tank launcher squad in Gaza After security consultation in Kirya: "Continue with powerful attacks" IDF deploys artillery batteries in the envelope, speeding guns are stationed near the Gaza border A building and several residential buildings in Ashkelon suffered direct hits from rockets IDF: We attacked 130 targets in the Gaza Strip; the Palestinians The military wing of Hamas has claimed responsibility for the latest firing: "This is the largest rocket strike of its kind to date, and this is the response to Israel's continued attacks on homes and resistance personnel." The statement said that "a more powerful response is expected." According to the statement, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades launched 137 rockets in just five minutes. Earlier, in an unusual statement issued by Hamas' military wing, it reported deaths and missing persons in an Israeli attack on a target where army operatives were. The location of the attack was not given. At the same time, Islamic Jihad announced that Israel had killed two of its operatives - Kamal Karika and Sameh Mamlouk - in another airstrike on a high-rise building in Gaza City. According to an IDF spokesman, Mamlouk was the head of Islamic Jihad's special rocket unit. Palestinian sources said that one of the targets of the assassination was one of the brothers of Baha Abu al-Atta, a northern brigade commander in Islamic Jihad who was eliminated in Operation Black Belt at the end of 2019. The brother was seriously injured, and it was later reported that he died from his wounds. The military wing of Islamic Jihad threatened: "Our response to the harm to civilians and the elimination of our fighters and resistance fighters will be severe. The enemy must expect it at any moment." In a situation assessment led by the Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, he instructed to continue attacking Hamas and Islamic Jihad weapons production and storage sites, "as was carried out throughout the night, along with expanding the attacks to additional targets. The Chief of Staff also made it clear that we must "continue to strike at every Hamas or Islamic Jihad operative, wherever he is, as we have been doing from the very beginning." In addition, the Chief of Staff directed that additional forces be reinforced for the Gaza Division of infantry and armored brigades, along with continued increased readiness of air defense, intelligence and air units. In addition, the Chief of Staff decided to suspend the "Chariots of Fire" general staff exercise for the coming week. A re-examination of the continuation of the exercise will take place after Shavuot. Kochavi concluded that "the IDF will continue to act with determination to restore security to the residents of the south, and all commands must prepare to expand the campaign, without a time limit." Earlier today, the Minister of Defense authorized the IDF to mobilize approximately 5,000 reserve soldiers on an extraordinary call-up alert for various formations, including the Southern Command, the Home Front Command and the Operations Division. This is for the purpose of continuing operational activity within the framework of Operation "Guardian of the Walls" and reinforcing the defense of the home front. After a situation assessment led by Gantz, and with the participation of the Chief of Staff, the Chief of Military Intelligence and other senior officials in the defense establishment, it was reported that "the IDF's recommendations to continue with powerful attacks were approved, and the continuation of operations against the enemy was approved." Gantz also instructed "to emphasize and respond to the needs and readiness of the home front, to continue with high alert in all arenas, and to prepare for propaganda efforts against false Palestinian claims." Gantz approved the request of Public Security Minister Amir Ohana to mobilize eight Border Guard companies to reinforce the forces. In the meantime, it was reported that "during the last 24 hours, the Gaza Division has been implementing multi-armed attack capabilities using fire from the air, sea and land. Using high-quality and precise intelligence, which allows for the rapid closure of aircraft and various ground units with fire capabilities, the IDF hit about 15 "TMS and anti-tank operatives and a large number of terror targets - Hamas infrastructure and underground targets." This morning, dozens of rockets were launched towards Ashkelon and its surroundings within half an hour, after a night during which residents of Ashkelon, Sderot and the surrounding area woke up time after time due to alarms.
