Airwars Assessment
During the morning of 28 February 2026, one person was reported injured during an alleged Iranian missile strike in the municipality of Tirat Carmel, south of Haifa in Israel. It is unclear whether the injury was indirectly or directly caused by a missile attack, and it is unclear whether the missile which struck Tirat Carmel was an Iranian missile or an Israeli interceptor missile.
Sources differed on the exact nature of the strike. NWS news reported that a missile fragment fell on a high-rise residential building, causing damage between the 17th and 20th floor. Ynet News claimed that the fragment reached the 14th floor from the 20th floor. Newzim reported that the missile itself penetrated the roof of the building, but did not explode.
Ynet News also carried photographs showing damage to the interiors of several apartments, and Middle East Observer posted a video on x.com showing the same. A statement published by haipo.com and quoting the Tirat Carmel Municipality Spokesperson specified that six apartments needed to be evacuated following the attack. The spokesperson had initially reported that “no casualties are known” from the attack but later stated that “damage and injuries” had been caused. According to NWS News and Ynet News, this attack reportedly caused one injury. The Times of Israel specified that “a 53-year-old was wounded after falling from a height following a missile fragment impact in Tirat Carmel” – this would be classified as indirect harm and therefore would not be counted among the civilian harm toll. However, it is unclear if this is the same injury that NWS News was referring to, therefore a civilian harm injury toll of 0-1 has been recorded.
According to NWS News, the attack occurred north of the Nof Yam neighbourhood in Tirat Carmel. Following the attack, President Yitzhak Herzog spoke with the mayor of Tirat Carmel, Dudu Cohen, and offered his support for the residents, while the mayor told him “To my great joy, the missile did not explode, and this is an event that ended in a truly great miracle. The damage was serious. The missile penetrated the roof and passed several floors. To our great joy, it missed the fire brigade by several meters.”
Ynet News spoke with Eliran, a resident of the impacted building in Tirat Carmel, “We experienced a great miracle. It appears to have been a large interceptor fragment that landed here. We heard a huge explosion and by sheer luck there is only one person lightly hurt. The damage is extensive, but the main thing is that forces are here assisting. All residents of the building will be evacuated soon, we were promised.” Ynet also spoke with a resident whose 15th-floor apartment was hit by the fragment. Linoy Ben Harosh said she had been inside a reinforced room when “we heard the siren, we were eating breakfast and then there was an early warning. We ran to the safe room and our three children went in with us. We have significant damage at home. We understood it entered several floors down from the upper levels. It was a great miracle that we were in the safe room.”
The Times of Israel described this as one of several Iranian ballistic missile attacks, and Middle East Observer also attributed the damage to “Iranian missile fire.” However, a resident specifically referred to the fragment as from an interceptor when speaking to Ynet News, which would refer to Israeli air defenses. Therefore, this incident has been graded as “contested”.
