Airwars assessment

Between three and six civilians, including a woman, were killed and between three and six others were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on a car traveling in al-Maghrabi on May 12, 2021.

According to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, “at approximately 11:30, Israeli warplanes launched a missile at a civilian white Skoda car traveling on al-Moghrabi Street in central Gaza City.  As a result, 6 were killed, including the driver, a man and his wife who were inside the car, a civilian in front of his house and 2 other passers-by. Those killed were identified as the driver Mustafa Mazen Salem Kurdiyah (22); Sa’id Hashim Sa’id al-Hatu (67) and his wife Maysoun Zaki Hashem al-Hatou (55); Mansour Yousif Hasan al-Dreimly (66), who was in front of his house in the area; and Nader Mohammed al-Ghazali (47) along with his nephew ‘Abdulsalam Mahmoud Nabih al-Ghazali (28), who were also from the same area. Moreover, the children of Sa’id al-Hatou, Muhammed and Yara, were wounded.”

B’Tselem collected testimony from Muhammad al-Hittu, 28, whose parents were killed in the incident and who was injured: “On Wednesday, 12 May 2021, there were heavy airstrikes in our neighborhood, Tal al-Hawa, in Gaza City. We feared for our lives and decided to leave home. We called our friend Mustafa Kurdiyah, who’s a taxi driver, and he came to pick us up. He arrived at 10:30 A.M. and drove my parents, my sister Yara, 29, and me to my sister Rasha al-Wahidi’s house in the neighborhood of a-Sabra. We planned to stay with her for a few days, just until the war was over. We got to my sister’s house and the taxi stopped out front. It was about 11:00 A.M. My sister Yara got out of the taxi and went into the house. I took out a bag that had our clothes in it, handed it to my mother and took another bag with clothes out of the taxi, and then we both made our way to the front door. I was walking a few steps ahead of my mother. My father was waiting for the driver, Mustafa, to hand him another bag he’d just taken out of the taxi, and then I heard a loud blast behind me. There was shrapnel everywhere. From the force of the blast, I was blown into the entrance to my sister’s house. I was hit by shrapnel in the back, neck, left hand and left leg. I was bleeding and couldn’t see where my parents were and what had happened to them. A few seconds later, I heard another missile land very close to us, but I didn’t know where. I was focused on trying to see my parents. Then an ambulance arrived and the paramedics gave me first aid. I saw the bodies of my father and of Mustafa lying by the taxi. I saw people cover them over. I knew my father was dead. My mother rode with me in the ambulance. I heard one of the paramedics say her pulse was very weak. When we got to a-Shifaa Hospital, the paramedics took me to the ER to give me first aid and took my mother somewhere else. After two hours, some relatives came and told me my mother and father had passed away. I broke down and started screaming and crying. I was in shock. Why did they bomb us? We’re just civilians. I lost the people most precious to me, my mother and father. We were just going to shelter at my sister’s. We wanted to celebrate the holiday with her. My mother had made holiday food and we brought it with us, salted fish and holiday cookies. I was only discharged from hospital two days later. I couldn’t attend my parents’ funeral, didn’t say goodbye to them, and didn’t hug them. When I got home and they weren’t there, I started screaming and crying. I hugged my sister Yara and my brother Ibrahim. Yara broke down. She’s in a terrible mental state. She saw them lying there, bleeding, and couldn’t do anything.”

Early reporting, including a tweet from @InstaNewsAlerts, identified three civilians as being killed in the strikes. @hibshib4 tweeted that there were “4 martyrs and 6 injuries” in the bombing. Raya News reported that those killed were taken to Al-Shifa Hospital, where their deaths were officially announced.

The Los Angelas Times reported that the day they were killed, “Mayson Hatu, a 50-year-old Palestinian mother of two, was determined to celebrate this week’s start of Eid al-Fitr. As she always did, she got new outfits ready for the children, and prepared a festive dish called fesikh, or salty fermented fish. She, her husband and children planned to celebrate at the home of relatives who lived in another part of the city.” Since they couldn’t find a taxi, she and her 65-year-old husband, Saeed Hashem Hatu, asked a neighbor who owned a taxi to give them a lift. En route, the car was hit by an airstrike that killed the couple and neighbor Mustafa Kordia, the driver. Their two young children were injured. It got worse: A subsequent strike, as bystanders rushed toward the stricken vehicle to try to help, killed a 28-year-old man and a 47-year-old man, witnesses said.”

Al Mezan identified Nader Mohammed al-Ghazali and Abdelsalam Mahmoud al-Ghazali as being owners of a nearby shop.

B’Tselem collected testimony from Mu’awiyah al-Wahidi, 42, a father of two who owns a barbershop near the scene of the incident: On Wednesday, 12 May 2021, I went to my barbershop on al-Mughrabi Street in the a-Sabra neighborhood. At around 11:00 A.M., I was sitting at a tailor shop that my brother owns along with my neighbor, Nader al-Ghazali, by my barbershop. While we were sitting there, Nader’s cousin, ‘Abd a-Salam al-Ghazali, arrived and Nader went out to meet him. A minute after Nader stepped out, I heard a loud explosion outside the shop. I ran outside and saw that Nader had been hit in the chest and was bleeding. I saw his cousin had been killed. I looked around and saw a white Skoda that had been bombed, with martyrs inside. I went back to Nader and tried to carry him away from there. Across the street I saw our neighbor Mansur a-Darimli, whom we call Abu Rami, lying on the ground. I dragged Nader about 50 meters away and then I dropped him. Blood came out of his mouth. A woman called out to me from a balcony to tell him to recite the Shahadatain prayer, and he started saying, “There’s no God but Allah.” Then I heard another missile and it hit me. It was four or five minutes after the first missile. I also started reciting the Shahadatain. I didn’t know what was happening to me and where I’d been hit. They took me to a-Shifaa Hospital. The doctors amputated my right leg above the knee. I have shrapnel in my back and head. In my right leg, I have a large flesh wound. After seven days, I was transferred to al-‘Awda Hospital for further treatment and I’m still there. I was later told that my neighbor Nader, his cousin and my neighbor Mansur a-Darimli were all killed in the strike, along with the al-Hittu family, who were standing by a taxi, and their taxi driver.”

A relative of the driver that was killed verified to the LA Times that none of the passengers in the vehicle were militants. “Mahmoud Mazen Kordia, the 24-year-old brother of the slain driver, said his sibling had nothing to do with the militants and was only helping out a family he knew and liked. The Hatus, he said, “are our nice neighbors who couldn’t find a taxi in this war to take them to celebrate Eid.”

A post of Facebook from Saadi Hals indicated that Abdulsalam Mahmoud Nabih al-Ghazali was a member of Fatah referencing a press release issued by the Information and Culture Commission that stated “the martyr Al-Ghazali rose to Alia Al-Majd as a result of being directly bombarded by the Israeli occupation forces on Al-Mughrabi Street in Al-Sabra neighborhood.” However, they do not indicate that he was a member of any militant group. All other sources refer to those involved in the incident as civilians.

All of the sources that attributed the strikes blamed Israeli planes for the bombing.

The incident occured at approximately 11:30 am local time.

Airwars assessment

At least two men were killed in Al-Shujaiya neighbourhood during alleged Israeli airstrikes in the area at around dawn on May 14th, 2021, multiple sources reported. They were identified as Husam Baker al-Hayya and Saqer Abdulmajid al-Hayya.

Both Husam Baker al-Hayya and Saqer Abdulmajid al-Hayya’s deaths were announced on Hamas’ Telegram channel, which identified them as “Al-Qassami Mujahid” meaning they were possibly fighters belonging to the group’s military wing. Undated photos shared on social media showed the two men in military fatigues with guns. Three other sources meanwhile identified Saqer as a Sheikh, with a Facebook post from My World describing him as a “distinguished preacher in the Waqf of Gaza City” who had presented his master’s thesis at the Islamic University three days earlier.

The two men were killed after missiles struck a group of people, according to both Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. Multiple sources reported heavy strikes in the area, with damage sustained to the local cemetery, alongside civilian homes. The consensus among the sources was that Israel was responsible for the strikes.

This assessment was discounted as a civilian harm incident after a review of sources found that those harmed in the event were militants.

The incident occured around dawn.

The victims were named as:

Age unknown male A single source also identified an additional death from strikes in the area; a man named Mohammed Sa'eed Abu Al Ataa. It was however not clear if he died in this specific incident and no additional information was given killed

Airwars assessment

One man was reported killed and up to four others were reported injured when an alleged Israeli airstrike struck a group of people near the Qurum roundabout, East of Jabalia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip in the early hours of 16 May. Al Qassam identified the man killed as being a member of the Mujahid Qassami.

Various sources have confirmed the death of Tariq Ziyad Mustafa Abu Humaidan, aged 19 or 20, in an airstrike around 00:15. Tariq was an engineering student at Al-Isra’a university. The university also reported his death on its official Facebook page. However, Al Qassam Brigades also posted a memorial for him on their website, referring to him as a “Mujahid Qassami”.

Multiple sources, including Nabd News and Shams News reported three other injuries, with Al Mezan and Al Haq amongst those reporting two. Of those injured, one was serious, requiring the amputation of a leg, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. The other injuries have been described in the sources as moderate.

Various sources indicated that this was a drone strike, allegedly attributed to Israeli forces. The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement that “11:31 – A fighter jet attacked the home of the commander of the Kfar Jabalya battalion in Hamas, from which military combat infrastructure operated.”

The incident occured at approximately 12:15 am local time.

Airwars assessment

There was wide scale reporting of the death of civilian Raed Zakariya Mohammad Hamad, aged 32, after alleged Israeli forces’ artillery hit Al Qarman Street, east of Beit Hanoun at approximately 2pm on May 19th 2021. Another 10 civilians were reportedly wounded, including at least one child.

The artillery shells hit the house of Zakariya Mohammad Hamad, the father of Mr. Hamad, who was killed in the attack.

Mr. Hamad, the father of Raed, was interviewed by the Washington Post. The Washington Post reported “Hamad and his wife had moved in upstairs, and that is where the whole family, including his 33-year old son Raed and five nieces and nephews, had gathered on May 19. It had been a quiet afternoon, they said, before an explosion rocked the house.”

The Washington Post also reported that “the Israeli military said it had no record of an attack on the area at the time. It says that hundreds of the rockets Hamas attempted to fire into Israel during the conflict missed their mark and instead landed inside Gaza.” This is disputed by all other sources which attribute the attack directly from an Israeli forces’ air strike.

As well as reporting the death of Mr. Hamad, Al Hayat Press reported that, “more than ten others” were wounded. Other sources mention that this was a different number, for example Quds Press reported that it was six people, who were taken to Beit Hanoun Governmental Hospital. Another local source, @PalEvePlus, reported from the Gaza Health Ministry that eight were injured, whilst Al Haq put this number at one.

PCHR Gaza reported that a child was wounded; this could possibly be Hussein Munir Hamad, who was reported by Wael Hamad, the cousin of the family, as a ‘martyr’, and a photo of a small child was uploaded, but it is not clear in any other source that they lost their life. Gaza Now reported that the child who was injured was Mr. Hamad’s nephew.

@dabkezone, a source on Instagram and a member of the Hamad family, reported on May 21st 2021 that “yesterday at 7:19am, I received several messages from my youngest sister who lives in Beit Hanoun, a border-village in the north of Gaza… The messages read, “Ahmad, Raed my cousin was martyred and your nephew Aser is injured.” A tank shell hit Raed directly. They found him in pieces, unrecognizable to those he was closest to.”

They continued, “3 days before Raed’s death, I called my sister and spoke to her. Raed was around, and I ended up speaking to him for about 2 hours. Our call started the way things always used to do with him, full of laughter… He told me about his clothing business and how it’s finally doing well, and that he is going to get married in 2 months time, something everyone was looking forward to celebrating.”

“His voice still rings in my ears from our last call. It hurts to know that I won’t be seeing him again.”

The same cousin, @dabkezone, in another Instagram wrote, “Raed received a call from our friend Rami who lives in the same area, and walked into the same room my sister had just left. As he looked through the window to see what was going on outside, a missile hit him directly and ended his life in pieces.”

A local source on Twitter, @a014576, reported that “the city of Beit Hanoun and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine bury the body of its heroic comrade” and featured pictures of crowds gathered at his funeral, with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine flags. Hadaf News also reported that Mr. Hamad was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The source mentioned that “he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in 2006.”

The incident occured at approximately 2:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Between six and ten civilians were reported killed, including at least one member of the Palestinian Civil Defense and five children, when alleged Israeli missiles struck a Palestinian Civil Defense facility alongside the Dahir family home on October 21st, 2023. A number of other civilians, including Palestinian Civil Defense members, were also injured.

The incident took place near the Khirbet Al-Adas junction, east of Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning.

Muhammad Fawzi Qtait also known as Abu Jazar (father of Jazar) was named as the Palestinian Civil Defense paramedic and firefighter killed in the strike. He was reported to be from Ma’an, Khan Yunis.

In a post from the Dhuhair family, it was reported that eight members of the family were killed including five children. The names were identified as: Ayman Islam Muhammad Hamad Dhahir, Iman Islam Muhammad Hamad Dhahir, Andalus Islam Muhammad Hamad Dhahir, Aws Islam Muhammad Hamad Dhahir and another child Elias Anas Muhammad Hamad Dhahir.

Family members named as mourning the victims – though not present during the strike – included grandmother Nabila, Elias’ parents, Anas Dhahir and Hanin Saleh Zorob, and Ayman, Iman, Andalus and Aws’ father Islam Muhammad Hamad Duhair. Aws’ kindergarten, Baraem Al Tofoula Model Kindergarten, made a post announcing his death and expressing their deep sorrow.

The Ministry of the Interior and the Directorate of the Civil Defense in Gaza reported the death of Muhammad Qtait and the injury of at least four other Civil Defense members, while source Adnan Ghanima reported in a tweet that six members were seriously injured. According to Masdar Al Akhbariya, 11 Civil Defense workers were injured and three were in serious condition. A post from the Rafah Municipality reported several deaths and injuries among Civil Defense members and civilians. The casualty range for those injured is therefore put at 4-11.

Where possible, Airwars has matched names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli airplanes.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, a young man Muhammad Raed Abu Amsha “Abu Islam” (31 years old), was killed and others were wounded on October 8th, 2023 in the Abu Amsha family home in the Beit Hanoun neighborhood of the Gaza Strip, in a strike allegedly carried out by Israeli aircraft.

Condolences messages were posted by multiple family and friends in honor of Muhammad Raed Abu Amsha, including from cousins and a nephew. A post from Ibrahim Abuamsha referred to Muhammad as the “martyr leader” (القائد ) but it is unclear if this is referencing militant status or not, with no other mentions in sources. Given that this term is also often used to refer to family ‘leaders’, Airwars has assumed civilian status for Muhammad Amsha until further information comes to light.

Shehab Agency reported numerous other injuries, though information regarding other wounded was not available. Refugees PS, quoting the Interior Ministry, referred to other deaths, though this has not been corroborated.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

A Facebook post from Kanary Al-Sabah reported that their grandfather Abu Khalil Bardawil’s house in Nuseirat was bombed, and a post from Zead.awad.378 documented the names of those killed: Hanan Muhammad Mahmoud Bardawil, Reham Youssef Muhammad Al-Bardawil, Sondos Reham Mahmoud Al-Azaib, Youssef Muhammad Khamis Bardawil, Shaima Amin Abdel Fattah Al-Bardawil, Muhannad Ziyad Mahmoud Al-Azaib, Ziyad Mahmoud Salim Al-Azaib, Rand Sameh Muhammad Abu Khoussa, Yazan Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Bardawil (child), Basil Bardawil.

The same source noted that there were “still other family members missing under the rubble of the house”.

Abdulrahman tweeted that 10 people were killed and 25 survived but were recovered from the rubble of the Bardawil family home. Zyad Awad reported that “a number of innocent children” were killed in the bombing of the Bardawil family and specified the “tragic moments” of the death of Widad Bardawil and Roseanne Bardawil.

A video posted by @Jales_tinian2 identified a boy who was injured during the strike who lost his mother, father, siblings, and his unborn brother who was due to be born in a month. The same source also specified that three children were among those killed.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. Multiple sources also reported that the strike happened without warning.
