Airwars assessment
Around 10:15 PM on Saturday, December 23rd, 2023, an alleged Turkish airstrike hit the Awda (Odeh) oil station in the countryside of the town of Al-Qahtaniyah (Tirbespiyeh), Syria, injuring a citizen named Hussein Hamza Saadoun and reportedly a number of other oil station employees.
Multiple reports came out to indicate that the oil wells were subject to airstrikes reportedly conducted by the Turkish military. Gul AGA media center hinted that the injured civilian Hussein Hamza Saadoun was a worker at the oil well station and that several other employees were injured. However, the source did not specify their number. ANF news reported that Hussein Hamza Saadoun was transferred to hospitals in the city of Qamishlo.
Facebook user Dirke Hamko shared the image of smoke arising from the Awda oil station and added that it was hit with three strikes. However, ANF news reported that there was only one strike. Zarkan Alhadath shared the images belonging to ANFA news showing the aftermath of the fire that damaged the station. Rumeilan Fire Station shared the images of its firefighters coping with the fire.
The bombings rendered the Odeh station completely inoperative, leading to a cessation of gas compressors that supply the necessary gas for the operation of the Swedish power station. This, in turn, caused a power outage affecting the villages and towns of the areas of Jal Agha, Tirbe Spiyeh, and the city of Derik. Additional facilities, including the Awda oil station and electrical facilities in the village of Al-Suwaydiyah in the Hasakah countryside, were also put out of service due to these air strikes. The attacks have led to widespread power outages across several regions, including Dirk, Al-Malikiyah, Tarbesbey, Al-Qahtaniya, and Al-Jawadiya in the Hasakah countryside.
The exact local time of the strike is not confirmed, but the Gul Aga media center reported that at 22:15 the Turkish occupation army conducted airstrikes targeting oil stations near the Tirbespiyeh district and the city of Derik in Al-Jazeera province, northern and eastern Syria; however, this information has not been independently verified by other sources.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
The incident occured at approximately 10:15 pm local time.
