Airwars assessment
Shortly before 11:18 AM on October 21st, 2024, alleged Israeli shelling hit a group of civilians while they were filling water near the Al-Halabi roundabout in Jabalia Al Balad, in the Jabalia Refugee Camp, north of the Gaza strip, resulting in many injuries and the death of at least six civilians, including at least two children and an elderly man.
Safa News was the first to report the incident at 11:18 AM, reporting six deaths and wounded in an Israeli shelling hitting citizens while they were filling water in Jabalia al-Balad, north of the Gaza Strip. While most of the sources reported “injuries”, Kelmt Haq reported that there were six casualties and “many injuries” resulting from the attack.
Amongst the identified victims were two adults, Mohammed Abed al-Bari al-Tayeb and Nasser al-Hourani (Abo Bassam), as well as two children, Ismail al-Hourani and Ahmed al-Hourani, Nasser’s two grandsons.
Several sources described the incident, such as Mohammad Shaaban, who expressed frustration: “They were filling water! By God, they were filling water. Thirsty people!” Mohammad included a very graphic video of the aftermath of the airstrike where the bodies of the six victims can be seen lying on the street covered by blood, while several people attempted to move them off the floor towards a nearby ambulance.
Additionally, Moqadem Rabeh and Nabd News shared pictures of the same scene. One photograph showed a graphic image of deceased child lying in the trunk of an ambulance, a Red Crescent volunteer near him. The child had visible injuries to his arm and his head. The second photograph showed a group of five men moving one of the bodies with a stretcher.
Ahmad Horani offered his “deepest condolences and sympathy” to his cousin Dr. Abdul Hadi al-Hourani for the death of his brother, Nasser al-Hourani, and his grandchildren. He wrote, “We ask God Almighty to have mercy on the martyrs and to grant them a place in His spacious gardens and to inspire their families and relatives with patience, solace, and good consolation.”
Writing in tribute to the family, Hossam Badra Abo Mohammed said, “May God have mercy on them with His vast mercy, God of the Worlds”, lamenting the death of his brother-in-law, the deceased Nasser al-Hourani, as well as “his grandson and his granddaughter”. This is the only source that refers to Nasser’s granddaughter, potentially one of the two victims unidentified. He also shared a picture of a smiling Nasser at the beach, an elderly man wearing a blue shirt over a white T-shirt, and holding a big plate of kunafa.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
The incident occured at approximately 11:18 am local time.
