Airwars assessment

On February 25th 2022, Russian military allegedly exploded single cluster bomb at a children’s hospital and blood donation facility on Klochkovskaya Street in Kharkiv. One man was reportedly killed and two to three people, employees, including two women, were reportedly injured.

The attack was reported to have taken place approximately at 17.00, with the earliest recording from a car dashcam bearing a timestamp of 16:41. Local sources reported that there were seven or eight explosions near the centre. Airwars geolocation teams were able to identify nine explosions in the video and Imogen Piper from the investigations team found 25 craters.

The man who was reported killed, according to SQ “probably came to donate blood, he was standing on the street during the shelling” but he was described in other sources as a “passerby” and Suspilne Kharkiv on Telegram reported that the director of the centre said that there were two injured workers and one dead passerby, not a donor. SQ also identified the three wounded as employees of the center, two women and a man.

Airwars investigations reported that experts had identified that a single cluster bomb, dropped from a sufficiently high altitude could produce the impact sites in this case which spanned 350 metres. Multiple different weapons experts identified the cluster submunitions as Russian makes, either model 9N235 or 9N210, which can be delivered by two Russian rockets 220mm 9M27K Uragan; and the 300mm 9M55K Smerch, which carry 30 and 72 submunitions respectively. Russia has not commented officially on this incident.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR53878 and Attacks on health dataset code 34136.

Airwars assessment

Between five and eight civilians were killed and up to 10 others were injured by alleged Russian airstrikes/shelling of a residential building on Novobavarsky Avenue, 95 in the Bavaria district of Kharkiv on March 1, 2022.

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group identified eight people killed, six people injured, and 38 people rescued following the bombing. @SESU_UA stated that two of the people rescued were unblocked from under the rubble, and at the time of reporting people were still being rescued. A Telegram from the Kharkiv Prosecutor’s Office (Prokuratura_kharkiv) reported that five people were killed and 10 people were injured, adding that this was a preliminary number still being established.

RBC News reported that shelling struck Hospital No. 3 and then airstrikes hit a factory and a residential apartment building in Bavaria. The head of the district administration, Tetyana Tsybulnyk, told Suspilne that a bomb hit the fifth floor of a building on Novobavarskiy Avenue, resulting in many injured and people under the rubble. A tweet from @SESU_UA specified that the airstrike hit between entrances two and three (out of six total) of the five floor building.

Svitlana Gorbunova-Ruban, deputy mayor of Kharkiv, told Suspilne that shells also hit the territory of Hospital No. 3 nearby in the Novobarav district. Yurii Sorokolat, director of the city health department, stated that none of the doctors or patients were injured but 9 patients were transferred to Hospital No. 31.

The Kharkiv Prosecutor’s Office (Prokuratura_kharkiv) posted on Telegram that “in total, the enemy fired 3 shots with three rockets, among which the first hit between entrances 2 and 3, resulting in the formation of a funnel with a diameter of 3-4 meters, the second hit the roadway along Novobavarskiy Avenue, 95 in the direction of the village. Pisochyn, as a result of which a funnel with a diameter of 2-2.5 meters was formed, the third rocket hit the territory of the Kharkiv plant of lifting transport equipment on Novobavarskiy avenue, 118, whose buildings were damaged.”

Igor Terekhov, mayor of Kharkiv, told RBC “We are constantly being shelled. A rocket attack was just launched on a residential neighborhood. There are dead, there are victims, the hospital has been destroyed. Therefore, of course, the situation is very difficult. There are dead people, there are wounded. That is why the situation is serious.”

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group attributed the incident to the Russian Armed Forces, with other sources like Helsinki.org posting similar attributions. A tweet from @olehbatkovych reported that the Russian jet was shot down after his airstrike, according to an official.

This incident has reference to ACLED code UKR52470 and Attacks on health dataset code 31550.

The incident occured at 16:15:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

On Friday April 15th 2022, an alleged Russian missile strike hit the Sarhyn Yar neighborhood and the Shevchenkivskyi district in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, killing between 7 and 10 civilians, including a seven month old, and injuring between 34 and 50 civilians, including up to nine children.

Sources are not consistent regarding the number of civilians harmed by the attack. The majority of them, including Ukrainska Pravda, Inforesist, and Suspilne Kharkiv account for 10 civilians being killed, Kharkiv Today reported 9, while KHPG-inform and Kharkiv Today, among others, report either 7 or 8.

On the other hand, majority of the sources report, 42 injured civilians, including Kharkiv Times, KHPG-inform, and Suspilne Kharkiv, but the same sources also report lower numbers such as 34 or 35.This discrepancy in reporting can be justified by the number of victim rising after the initial reports after the attack, as explained by Ukrainska Pravda. Focus News, quoting Maksim Khautov, Director of the Public Health Department of the OVA, accounted for 50 civilians being injured, including 33 adults and nine children.

Natalya Popova, adviser to the head of the Kharkiv regional council, added that doctors were fighting for the lives of two children. A Facebook post by Yuriy Shevchenko identified a 7 year old child as sustaining a serious wound to their leg.

Reports from the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group and the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union both quote Suspilne Kharkiv reporting the declarations of Maksym Khoustov, Director of the Health Department of KHOVA, and Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, accounting for 42 injured and 10 killed civilians.

Almost all sources, including Inforesist, Kharkiv Times, and Vgorode, identified one of the victims as a seven-month-old infant and between three to nine children injured.

In addition, the prosecutor’s office of the Kharkiv region initiated a pre-trial investigation for premeditated murder related to the event, as reported by Kharkiv prosecutor’s office telegram channel.

Objektiv.TV stated that the attack in the KhTZ area of Kharkiv took place around 16:16, when emergency services were dispatched, hitting a residential area and a playground. In addition, Suspilne Kharkiv stated that the attack in the Industrial district of Kharkiv took place at about 16:30, damaging and destroying several residential buildings with Uragan multiple rocket launchers, as also mentioned by the Kharkiv prosecutor’s office telegram channel. KHPG-inform added that a dental polyclinic was hit with shelling in addition to residential areas.

The suspected attacker is alleged to be Russia, as reported by most of the sources including Truexanewsua, Suspilne Kharkiv, and Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s telegram channel, although responsibility has been contested by Kharkov Nash telegram channel, a Ukrainian channel based in Kharkiv, claiming that Russian troops near Kharkiv are using different weapons than those used in the attack, saying they would not use “grads” but “tornadoes”, due to the range of attack of the first ones being too small.

The incident has reference to ACLED code UKR55820 and Bellingcat code CIV0798.

The incident occured at approximately 4:16 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Civilians were wounded by alleged Russian shelling of Izium in Kharkiv on March 8, 2022.

Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group reported that artillery shelling in Izyum resulted in damage to the reception department of the central city hospital, the social security office, and a two-story residential building.

Suspilne Media added that as a result of the shelling, patients and wounded were forced to stay in the basement because the building of the medical facility was destroyed. Maksym Strelnyk, the head of the youth and sports section of the Izyum City Council, told Suspilny that “Hundreds of residential buildings were damaged. The hospital was destroyed, there is no heat, water, or electricity, that is, it is impossible to provide medical services. The sick and wounded are in the basement with no hope of recovery. All ambulances have been shot and are not working.” Other sources gave similar mentions of wounded but did not specify how many.

Deputy Mayor Volodymyr Matsokin posted on Facebook that “I thought that the gates of hell had closed, but it turned out that it was only the first floor. This is the reception department of our Central City Hospital. Probably another secret NATO base. Patients got out from under the rubble as best they could.”

Slovoidilo News and other local sources attributed the incident to Russian forces.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR53013 and Attacks on health dataset code 36806.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

During the second reported Russian shelling of the village of Derhachi on May 12th, two medics were injured.

Kharkiv Today reported that a total of two civilians were killed and four were wounded, including two medics. Two civilian deaths and two injuries were accounted for in RUK0230 as occurring during the first shelling of the day, therefore this incident corresponds to the two medics injured.

Kharkiv Today also reported on infrastructure that was damaged by the shelling: ” A civil registry office, the catering unit of the district hospital, part of the polyclinic along with the x-ray room were destroyed and the building of the ambulance department was damaged by the blast wave. Shells destroyed the building of the House of Culture, where the humanitarian aid distribution centre was located.” It is unclear whether this damage occurred in the first (RUK0230) or second shelling during the day.

Due to the shelling Dergachyovo city council announced that there would be no humanitarian aid distribution: “Tonight the occupants have completed their work and destroyed the Dergachy culture house, and at the same time our humanitarian headquarters, with a missile strike. In this regard, there will be no distribution of humanitarian aid today.” In a video posted by Truexa News UA, the damage to the humanitarian aid center was described as “The roof was smashed, a hole was punched in the concrete floor, three floors were destroyed.”

No Russian state-run sources were found related to this incident.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR57687 and Attacks on health dataset code 34172.
