Airwars assessment

A report of alleged Russian shells struck the village of Derhachi on May 12th, killing two civilians and wounding two others.

Hromadske and RBC News reported a shelling of Derhachi by Russian forces that left one civilian dead and three wounded. Writing for RBC News, author Maria Kucheryavets quoted Kharkiv Regional State Administrator Oleg Sinegubov as noting that the previous twenty-four hours in the region had been “quiet”, but he urged citizens to “never relax and neglect your own safety”.

A video released by Radio Svoboda stated that the bombs used were “Uragan missiles”, and the video captured the destruction of homes in a dense residential area. The voiceover in the clip also detailed the victim as 46 year old woman who was killed in her backyard cooking over a fire due to a lack of electricity. The Victims Memorial website (victims.memorial) also stated that her husband, initially wounded in the blast, died later as well.

The brother of the husband who died said that the husband and the wife were “a model of married life. They complemented each other. They were always together and did everything together. They are kind, sensitive, fair. They helped everyone, in word, in deed, or just by listening to them. You could recharge your batteries with the positive energy they radiated.”

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR77864 and Attacks on health dataset code 34172.

The incident occured in the morning.

Airwars assessment

On the morning of 11th May 2022 at 10:45 am, a 26yr old civilian tractor driver from Gadyach was allegedly struck with a guided missile launched from a low-flying Russian aircraft whilst working in a field in the village of Novy Merchik. The attack caused multiple burns and leg injuries to the tractor driver and left them hospitalised in a serious condition according to Head of the Kharkiv OVA Oleg Sinegubov.

Witnesses at the scene stated the Russian plane flew at a low altitude when it launched the missile and had come past for a second lap, resulting in Oleksandr Osetrov, director of Nika, the injured worker’s employer to vehemently declare that “we can assume that the enemy clearly saw and understood that they were aiming a missile at civilians, which is unacceptable”.

As a result, Sergei Bolvinov, head of the Investigation Department of the National Police in Kharkiv, specified as a result of this alleged targetted attack, the Bohodukhiv District Police Department of the Kharkiv Regional Police along with prosecutors of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, both of whom had members examine the scene, have launched Criminal proceedings under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Violation of laws and customs of war). The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the SBU Office in the Kharkiv region.

The State Emergency Service units worked at the scene and extinguished the fire caused by the missile at 12:21.

Airwars assessment

On May 8th 2022, two civilians, two men, were reportedly killed following alleged Russian artillery shelling in Kalynove (Kalinove) village, Kharkiv oblast.

Ukrainska Pravda said: “In Kalynove, two people were killed when a projectile hit a house. The shelling of the village took place from the side of Kozachya Lopana at approximately 4:00 p.m. [according to] Kovalenko’s [head of Zolochiv community] direct speech: “Two men, 71 and 51 years old, went to a house to have lunch. And then a projectile flew right into the house. Both died.” Kharkiv Human Rights Protection group reported that “a shell hit the house where two men were staying. The direct hit started a fire that destroyed the entire building and left the men with life-threatening injuries”.

The Victims Memorial platform published the story as well as testimonies of family and friends of the 50 years-old victim, stating that that man died “in the yard of his neighbor and friend”. According to that source, the man was born and lived in Kalynove village. He “worked in a bakery of one of the supermarkets in Kharkiv”. He was described by the mayor of the district as a “kind and hardworking person”, “helping his neighbors as much as he could” during the full-scale war. Below are two testimonies quoted by Victims Memorial from one of his daughers and from one of his friends:

“Dad was not used to sitting idly by – and at home, after work, he always had a lot of trouble: gardens, livestock, household chores. He worked all his life for the benefit of the family. His only recreation was watching movies. Dad was the best for me. (…) Dad always waited for me at home after school. There are no words to explain how painful it is… This is a terrible and irreparable loss in my life…”

“He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, son and best friend! He raised two daughters with great love and care. He helped everyone who turned to him, did not refuse [to help] even in difficult situations. [He] sought to develop and live fully. At the age of 50, he bought his first car. Words cannot convey all the pain and sadness, because a person has just begun to achieve success,”

The General Prosecutor Office on Telegram added that apart from the two victims, Russian shelling also damaged “ten residential buildings” and that “more than ten more were destroyed.”. Another source quoting the head of the Zolochiv community, Viktor Kovalenko, said “the occupiers hit Kalinovy from the side of Kozachai Lopan. The shelling ended around 16:00. As a result, eight houses were destroyed and a fire broke out.”

Politinform reported that “due to this fact, criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 2 of Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war, related to intentional murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is conducted by the investigative department of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region, the regional prosecutor’s office is in charge of the process.”

ACLED’s reference code for this incident is UKR57453.

The incident occured at approximately 4:00 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

On May 6, 2022, five civilians, including a woman and a child, were reportedly killed by an alleged Russian-planted exploding mine when attempting to evacuate to Kharkiv by car from Kupyansk.

According to a post shared by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office’s Telegram channel, Ukrainian authorities first became aware of this incident when approached by a member of the public. The post gives further information regarding the identities of the civilians affected and the circumstances that led to their reported deaths, stating “pre-trial investigation established that people tried to evacuate from Kupyansk to Kharkiv. According to preliminary data, the car with passengers hit a mine. A 50-year-old woman, a 17-year-old boy and three men aged 19, 20 and 41 were in the car – all of them died.”

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, on October 3 the information given was confirmed when officials visited the site of the reported incident. On this, the post states, “prosecutors together with explosives experts, forensic experts and police investigators conducted an inspection of the scene, during which a burnt-out car and the bodies of the dead were discovered.” Five photographs of this scene were provided on the Prosecutor’s Office’s Telegram Channel, which show burned money, a damaged tire, and other debris in a field near what appears to be a small crater. The Office has stated that a pre-trial investigation has been launched in relation to these events for the alleged “violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder.”

This event has been covered by numerous Ukrainian outlets, including DonPatriot News, which differed from the Prosecutor’s Office on the age of one of the alleged victims, reporting, “It is known that these 5 people are residents of Kupyansk, who tried to evacuate to Kharkiv on their own by car on May 6, but encountered a racist mine on the way. Among them are a 41-year-old, a 18-year-old, a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old, and a 50-year-old.”

MediaPort and Suspilne Media, GX, and Obozrevatel all reported on this event, attributing responsibility for the placement of the mine to Russian forces.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR75457 and UKR76971.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
