Airwars assessment
Late in the evening of Monday, September 23rd, or early on Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, an airstrike allegedly carried out by Israeli forces on a home killed at least 13 civilians in the Wadi Ra’yan area of the town of Shaat, Bekaa Valley, eastern Lebanon.
Sources, including Al-Mayadeen and Al-Arabiya TV, reported that at least 10 civilians were killed, many belonging to the same family, while the Facebook accounts of Ouday Elattar and Akbar reported a total of 13 civilians killed by the strike. A Facebook post by Ali Almasri stated that the town of Shaat lost 15 people in the attack.
Mohammed Abdallah Ahmad al-Haj Hasan was killed along with his siblings (based on their middle names) Rouba Abdallah Ahmad al-Haj Hasan, Hiba Abdallah al-Haj Hasan, and Zahraa Abdallah al-Haj Hasan. Hamida al-Taqesh (wife of Fadlallah al-Hajj Hassan) was killed with her daughter Asmaa Fadlallah al-Haj Hasan and her son Ali Fadlallah al-Haj Hasan.
Zahraa al-Haj Hasan (wife of Hamza al-Hajj Hassan) was killed along with her children Hussein Hamza al-Haj Hasan and Rayhana Hamza al-Haj Hasan, as was Mahmoud Fadel and his son Ahmad Mahmoud Fadel. A child, Hussein al-Taqsh, was also reported killed.
Friends and relatives posted to social media in remembrance of those killed. Mahmoud Fadel was remembered as a “Hajj”, indicating he completed the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, an undertaking highly valued by his community. Mohammad Fadel, the son of Mahmoud Fadel and brother of Ahmed, announced that his “father and brother [were] martyrs,” attaching a picture of a man in black shirt and cap, and an elderly man in a blue checked shirt. Facebook user Abdo Al-Mukhtar remembered the child Hussein, asking that “God have mercy on him and forgive him” and that his family be imbued with “patience and solace”. A picture attached showed Hussein in a camouflage sweatshirt.
One post from Facebook user Balbak emphasised the “helplessness” felt by much of the community, and grieved the “lack of support” afforded them.
The Akhbar Zahle Facebook account reported on September 24th that the strike took place the evening before, September 23rd, in the Wadi al-Ra’a area in the Bekaa. However, according to Asharq News the strike took place at dawn on September 24th. Rescue teams were sent to uncover those buried beneath rubble.
