On Thursday 1st August 2024, shortly before 11.30am five civilians, including two children, were killed when an alleged Israeli airstrike or drone strike hit a home belonging to the Abu Nar family in the middle of Nuseirat refugee camp. The victims were transferred to Al Awda Hospital but passed away, according to local sources.

Safa PS reported the incident occurring in the vicinity of Al-Ishrin Street, south of Nuseirat camp. All other news outlets and social media users reported the incident occurring on 20th Street in the middle of Nuseirat camp.

Initially four of the victims were identified as 15-year-old Muhammad Bayan Abu Nar, his brother 17-year-old Mahmoud Bayan Abu Nar, their uncle 40-year-old Ahmed Abu Nar (Abu Allam) who worked as a barber and 32-year-old Ayman Hussein Abu Nar. Later @Palinfo and a number of other news outlets reported a fifth victim identified as 37-year-old Jamal al-Qarinawi (Abu Al-Abd). In a photo shared by @tamerschmot on Twitter/X, Jamal’s body is depicted wrapped in a bloodied white cloth. According to a post by Ayman al-Hafi, Bayan Abu Dar, father to Muhammad and Mahmoud and sibling of Ahmed, “is one of the most prominent leaders of the PLO in the Nuseirat camp and from its first generation”.

Twitter user @Jales_tinian2 mourned the victims, sharing a photo of Ahmed wearing a blue t-shirt smiling in a selfie alongside his nephew Mahmoud wearing a light brown shirt and Nike-branded cap. In another photo shared by Facebook user Ahmad Baroud, Ahmed, wearing a light green-blue shirt, smiles for a selfie in front of a small flowering tree. In his post, Baroud remembered his friend for his “smile” and “sweet soul.” Other friends wrote condolences for the surviving family, and asked that “God have mercy” on the deceased.

All names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released September 15, 2024.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
