Airwars assessment
On July 15th, 2024, an airstrike on Al-Salam Street in central Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip, killed three civilians, two women and a child, and injured at least four others. The victims who were killed were identified as a young child, Farid Muhammad Farid Thabet, 77-year old Mahasin Ibrahim Thabet, and 31-year-old Majdi Kamel Abu Mazid.
On July 15th, 2024, at 12:16 local time, the Safa Palestinian Press Agency reported the bombing of a residential house in central Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip and that the attack resulted in at least two deaths and one injury. Various Twitter/X users, including @ShehabAgency, @newsnajah, @sameh2655014316, and the news agency Aljazeera, reported that three people, including a child, were killed, and several others were injured in the strike. Aljazeera further reported that the victims were transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
Twitter/X user @AnasAlSharif0 and Facebook user Osama Ahmad Mashni posted videos from different angles, showing a young man carrying the injured or deceased child. Other X users, @AFYemeni and @YAhmdalshrfy, shared the same video depicting rescuers and doctors attempting to resuscitate the child. Later that day, Facebook page Mahmoud Abu Zanada Media Platform shared the names, genders, and ages of the three civilians killed: “1. Child martyr: Farid Muhammad Farid Thabet, 2. Female martyr: Mahasin Thabet, 3. Martyr: Majdi Kamel Abu Mazid.”
The Facebook page AJA.Palestine posted a media report showing at least four wounded individuals and two of the deceased being brought to the hospital. The Facebook page Nael.thabet identified the child as three-year-old Farid Muhammad Farid Thabet, stating that “He was targeted three times with missiles weighing one ton each.” This user also posted a video showing the bombed residential house and ongoing rescue efforts. The Facebook page Jerusalem Today reported, “Three martyrs and several injuries in the targeting of the Thabet family home on Al-Salam Street.”
Facebook user Ahlâm A. Thãbêt shared that his uncle, Mr. Walid Muhammad Thabet’s house was bombed, resulting in the deaths of Mahasin Ibrahim Thabet and his cousin’s son, Farid Muhammad Farid Thabet, who was one and a half years old. He also listed the injured relatives: his cousin Muhammad Farid Thabet (Abu Samer), his cousin’s wife/Umm Samer, his cousin’s eldest son/Samer Muhammad Thabet, and Samer’s son, Ahmed Samer Thabet.
On July 16th, Facebook user Diaa Thabet Abu Adi posted about the deaths of his grandmother, Mahasin Ibrahim Thabet, and his cousin, Farid Muhammad Farid Thabet, including images of the sleeping child and a smiling photo of him with his grandmother.
Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on September 16, 2024.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
