Airwars assessment
At around 21:30 on Sunday, 31st March 2024, two civilians were injured by a number of airstrikes allegedly perpetrated by the Israeli military on the towns of Dimas and Jamraya located west of Damascus, Syria. One of the strikes reportedly hit the Scientific Research Center in the Jamraya area, resulting in fire.
Referring to a military source, state-controlled SANA news agency reported about the strikes on several points in the vicinity of Damascus that resulted in the injury of two civilians and material losses.
Other sources, including Euphrates Post and Syrian Press Agency, claimed that the airstrikes attacked the positions of Syrian regime forces. A Twitter/X user @RaymondFHakim reported that the airstrikes hit military sites belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Damascus countryside.
Media outlet Correspondents Network reported the attack on the Scientific Research Center in the Jamraya area and shared an image showing red flames and a huge cloud of smoke rising on the horizon. According to Twitter/X user @nourabohsn, a fire broke out after the attack, and ambulances rushed to the place of the incident.
Twitter/X users @NabilaFadel6060 and @mog_china shared a video allegedly showing the moment the strike hit Jamraya where red flashes of explosions were visible on the horizon accompanied by loud sounds.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all of the reports concurred that the belligerent was the Israeli military. A tweet from @Fouadkhreiss seems to misquote the Syrian Ministry of Defense and instead accuse the US of carrying out the strikes (based on the statement provided by SANA with near identical language) but as this is mistake from an original source, the incident is not considered “contested.”
The incident occured at approximately 9:30 pm local time.
