Airwars assessment
At one o’clock in the morning of Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, at least three identified civilians, including two women, died in an airstrike reportedly perpetrated by Jordanian forces on the house of Omar Talab in Arman town located in the Al Suwayda city area, Syria, while up to three civilians were reportedly injured.
A rescue operation was carried out in the town of Arman following an airstrike that destroyed several homes. According to the Suwayda 24 correspondent, the airstrike hit the house of Omar Talab, located in one of the outlying neighborhoods of the town, killing Omar Talab himself, his mother Amal Zain al-Din, and his aunt Ittihad Talab.
Suwayda24 wrote “At exactly one o’clock after midnight, warplanes carried out simultaneous air strikes on residential neighborhoods in the neighboring towns of Arman and Malah, in the southeastern countryside of Suwayda. In Malah, the strike caused material damage to some homes, while in Arman, it left an unprecedented disaster.”
According to what various sources confirmed to Suwayda 24, military aircraft allegedly carried out two raids on the town of Arman. The first hit the house of Omar Talab, in one of the outlying neighborhoods of the town, and the second hit the two-story house of Turki Al-Halabi, in the center of the town. The latter attack is covered in the incident JS009.
The Suwayda Fire Brigade announced the death of eight people in the two airstrikes as a preliminary toll, and the injury of three others, who were transferred to the governorate’s hospitals. However, the figure of injured may also include the injured in the strike on Al-Halabi’s house – to avoid duplicate counts, the injuries have been counted in this incident and will be updated if additional information comes to light.
Multiple people were recovered from under the rubble as shown in several photos posted where the structure was visibly destroyed and civil defense members were attending the scene at night. Facebook user Alaa Al-Maqt posted a picture of people carrying multiple coffins too.
Twitter/X user @D1MHMOF4KPr53P9 detailed that people gathered and started recovering the bodies of the victims after the incident and found Amal Zain al-Din’s body first.
