Airwars assessment
At 1:00 AM on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, at least seven identified civilians, including three women and two children, were killed in an airstrike reportedly perpetrated by Jordanian forces on the house of Turki Al Halabi in the center of the Arman town located in the southeast of Al Suwayda city area, Syria.
The airstrike destroyed the two-story house and left under the rubble the bodies of the retired Colonel Nazih Al-Halabi, his wife Iqbal Al-Halabi, his brother Turki Al-Halabi, Turki Al-Halabi’s wife Faten Abu Shaheen, Turki Al-Halabi’s two daughters Farah Turki Al-Halabi and Dima Turki Al-Halabi, and Turki and Nazih Al-Halabi’s mother Rosa Al-Halabi. The bodies were recovered as Jordanian aircraft continued patrolling the area.
Farah Turki Al-Halabi was a two-year-old child with a clear skin tone, big brown eyes, thin lips, and long straight hair in a ponytail; she was wearing a pink sweatshirt and a big pink jacket. Her sister, Dima Al-Halabi, a five-year-old child was similar to her sister with a clear skin tone, big brown eyes, thin lips, and long straight hair; she was wearing a mint green sweatshirt, a big pink jacket with print and a golden crown made of cardboard in a photo posted.
Several neighbors and people gathered to retrieve the bodies, most of them recovered in pieces, alongside civil defense team members and firefighters. The rescue operation lasted over 10 hours and heavy machinery was used for the operation too as captured in several videos and photos posted.
According to the Suwayda24 news media outlet, people around were seemingly affected by the attack as quoted: “The shock was evident on the faces of the people and those present”(…) “Large crowds of people mourned the bodies of the ten victims, amidst a state of anger and resentment” (…) ”Expressions of dissatisfaction and condemnation are not sufficient to describe the state of anger among the people”. In addition, user @SARYTELJABAL of Twitter/X, posted a photo of the location of the incident, a mountainous relief close in the southern part of the area.
The massacre brought the number of 10 victims, specifically, seven in the house of Turki Al Halabi, and three in the house of Omar Talab (covered in the incident JS008) as well as significant material damage. The Suwayda Fire Brigade announced the death of eight people in the two airstrikes as a preliminary toll, and the injury of three others, who were transferred to the governorate’s hospitals. However, the figure of injured may also include the injured in the strike on Omar Talab house – to avoid duplicate counts, the injuries have been counted in incident JS008 and will be updated if additional information comes to light.
Surface Maus Facebook account disclosed the strike hit Turki Al Halbi’s house as it was adjacent to Majdi Al-Halabi residence, who was allegedly a drug dealer in Arman. Some other users like @GeneralInspect3 posted on X/Twitter that Turki Al-Halabi was a drug dealer too. Despite that, other sources did not support or refute this claim.
According to the sources, the belligerent of this attack was the Jordanian military.
The incident occured at 01:00:00 local time.
