Airwars assessment

Multiple reports said that 99 civilians died and approximately 120 had been wounded in alleged Coalition airstrikes on Raqqa within the last 72 hours. These numbers, however, are general numbers and Airwars has not, so far, been able to break them down to specific locations.

Al Hasaka Rasd, @raassaf77, @freedom_raqqa1, @mogthdarqqat, @alksndr111, @Mohamma26725093 produced carbon copies of the same report giving these figures.

According to Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, “there were nearly 100 martyrs and hundreds wounded in days by daily massacres in the city of Raqqa by the Coalition and the SDF.”

Airwars assessment

Residents and press sources said that 13 civilians were killed and others injured by alleged Coalition airstrikes which reportedly targeted houses in the Qaim district, west of Anbar.

Yaqein reported: Coalition aircraft bombed areas in the city of Qaim (350 km west of Ramadi), causing extensive damage, a press source said in a statement.

The shelling killed more than 13 civilians and injured several others, the source said.

Rawa named seven victims who were killed in the incident.

Airwars assessment

One girl died in a airstrike or artillery or mortar shelling of Raqqa, according to local sources.

The majority of sources blamed US-led Coalition airstrikes for the girl’s death.

In the last week (20th-27th) France reports carrying out two strikes in Raqqah, destroying two ISIL combat positions. Task Force (TF) Wagram carried out 21 artillery strikes in Mosul. The overall record of air activity since September 19th 2014 amounts to 1,324 strikes, 2,092 targets destroyed and 6,857 sorties.

‘OPÉRATION CHAMMAL SITUATION En Syrie, Dans la ville de Raqqah, Daech continue de perdre du terrain, jour après jour, face aux Forces Démocratiques Syriennes. Les combattants terroristes continuent néanmoins de disposer de solides positions défensives dans le cœur de la ville, à partir desquelles ils mènent des contre-attaques régulières et des actions de harcèlement. En Irak, Les forces de sécurités irakiennes poursuivent leurs opérations de sécurisation de la ville de Mossoul, face à des équipes isolées de combattants qui continuent de mener des actions symboliques de harcèlement. Thursday 27 July – a Tornado and Typhoon pair attacked mortar and sniper positions in Raqqa…The following day [July 27th], a mixed pair of a Tornado and a Typhoon, based at RAF Akrotiri and supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker, flew overwatch for Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advancing inside Raqqa. The SDF came under mortar fire from a terrorist position, but a Paveway IV attack removed this threat. Another Paveway IV similarly dealt with a sniper position which was encountered by the SDF two hours later.

Airwars assessment

Up to 48 civilians died and 40 were injured in alleged air and artillery strikes by the Coalition and the SDF in Raqqa, according to local media. However, sources did not specify the locations for these deaths and these are therefore general numbers.

Additionally, one source Watan reported that there had been Russian actions in Raqqa. It said: “The US-led International Air Force aircraft and the Russian air force carried out two horrific massacres in the city of al-Raqqa, ISIS’s stronghold in Syria. Both sides killed dozens of civilians and injured others.”

Airwars assessment

In the Amnesty and Airwars’s joint April 2019 report “War in Raqqa: Rhetoric versus Reality”, five civilians were reportedly killed in alleged Coalition artillery strikes in Raqqa. Although Airwars assesses single sourced incidents as “weak”, researchers have assessed this incident “fair” due to the depth of material provided by Amnesty.

According to Amnesty field notes there were two strikes. Firstly, an artillery strike on the house where the family was sheltering which prompted them and other neighbours to leave however, a barrage of artillery shells struck the street full of people, killing four members of the family and several other neighbours, and injuring many more. A second artillery strike hit the house where the family was sheltering and killed a displaced woman from Palmira who was also sheltering in the same house.

The victims and their relatives were – according to the report – “sheltering in a house with two other families (some 35 people in all) and the house was hit by a shell”.

In a testimony given by Khaled, a survivor of the strike, “In the space of a few minutes the street was full of dead bodies and injured people on the ground. Many of the victims were displaced people, who, like my family, were running away from the fighting.”

Researchers added that those injured in the strike included the mum, Khadija Hsein al-Ka’oud, 50 who obtained a neck injury and has been left completely paralysed on right side. The two children of Subhi’s, Bashar, 7 who has injures to the back of both his legs and Abdo, 5, who obtained a back injury. The two children now live with their grandparents.

The Abdallah family owned a tyre shop, which was run by Nazlat al-Shehada, however he was killed in the strike.

Sharqiya Voice reported a “massacre due to an aerial bombardment by the international coalition onTal Abyad Street, killing eight civilians and wounding dozens”.

Alraqqa_ahlna and AlhasakaArabia blamed a Coalition airstrike for the deaths.

However, Freedom_raqqa1 reported that “mortar shells” landed in Tal Abyad street, while P_center_sy1 blamed SDF mortar shells for the death and injury of “a number of civilians” in the street.

Some other sources said that artillery led to deaths. Airwars understands that only the Coalition is using artillery in Raqqa – though the SDF are reportedly using rockets and mortars.

Thursday 27 July – a Tornado and Typhoon pair attacked mortar and sniper positions in Raqqa…The following day [July 27th], a mixed pair of a Tornado and a Typhoon, based at RAF Akrotiri and supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker, flew overwatch for Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advancing inside Raqqa. The SDF came under mortar fire from a terrorist position, but a Paveway IV attack removed this threat. Another Paveway IV similarly dealt with a sniper position which was encountered by the SDF two hours later.

Four civilians – a father and his three children – died in a “rocket attack” or artillery bombardment on Raqqa’s Old Hal Market, local media reported – though it was unclear whether the Coalition or the SDF were responsible.

According to Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, “Fahd Abdulaziz Al-Majbil died in addition to three of his sons after the rocket attack that hit the area of the old Hal market”. Sharqiya Voice and other sources also named the victims of a “rocket attack” on the market.

According to Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently and Syrian Revolution the SDF carried out the rocket attack. But Alaraby pointed towards the US-led Coalition, reporting that it had fired land-to-land missiles on Old Hal market from its “Kharab Eshak base in the northern Raqqa countryside”.

7al.net said that four non-combatants died in artillery fire in Raqqa, though it didn’t give the location. Airwars understands that only the Coalition is using artillery in Raqqa.
