Airwars assessment

Between four and five civilians, including two children, were killed and 12 or more civilians were wounded in airstrikes on Al Shi’ar in Aleppo. The majority of sources did not identify who was to blame for the airstrikes but those that did, including Syrian Network for Human Rights and Syrian People’s Movement, attributed the airstrikes to Russian airplanes. A number of sources said that cluster bombs had been used in the attack.

Syrian People’s Movement reported that in addition to the human cost, the airstrikes “caused extensive destruction to residential homes” and “a popular market”, according to @Shahed_alep.

@HNMNEWS also stated that a “whole family” was crushed “under the rubble” following the airstrikes. Zaman Al Wasl added that Al Sha’ar had been subjected to constant air raids, which made it difficult for the Aleppo Free Police to carry out infrastructure projects to improve services.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

According to local sources, warplanes struck a house in Marat, Deir Ezzor, killing up to five civilians from the same family, including children and women as well as wounding up to ‘dozens’.

Several sources reported that the strikes struck residential buildings, calling the incident a “massacre”. Reportedly, the strikes struck a home belonging to the Darwish family, leading to at least four deaths.

Euphrates reported “Deir Ezzor countryside – Mrat: Warplanes commit a massacre after targeting the home of Thabet al Darwish killing four people and leaving dozens wounded in an initial toll.”

Meanwhile, several sources reported the death toll reached five, all women and children.
For example, @DeirEzzor24 reported: “five martyrs, all of them women and children and a number of wounded as a result of the bombing of warplanes to the town of #Mart in the countryside # Deir al-Azur East today noon.”

Deir Ezzor Radio identified four victims by name, listed below.

The number of injured varied among sources, spanning from seven to ‘dozens’.

Most sources did not identify a culprit and merely referred to “warplanes”.

Syrian News Desk reported that the victims were caused by “regular military air strikes”

Two sources, however, attributed the strikes to the Syrian regime. These were SPM News and al-Araby. SPM News also reported the use of cluster bombs. No sources pointed explicitly to Russia as the culprit.

There seemed to be some confusion as to whether the incident took place on the 23rd or 24th of November. However, most sources reported that the Darwish family was killed due to strikes on the 23rd, while another strike also took place on the following day, incident RS1683.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Further south in Iraq, a Daesh-held building had been identified in the countryside some 25 miles north-west of Bayji, with an armed truck hidden inside. Tornados demolished the building with a direct hit from a Paveway IV. Two more such weapons were used in attacks by Typhoons on a pair of defensive positions which the SDF had come up against in Raqqa.’

In the past week, France reports 21 sorties and 4 strikes, 2 in Raqqa and 2 in Iraq. Task Force Wagram conducted 15 artillery strikes in Mosul. Since September 19th 2014, it reports 1311 strikes, 2076 targets destroyed and 6775 sorties.

Airwars assessment

Local media reported a family of five, including children and three women, were killed following US-led Coalition airstrikes, near the market in Sooq Al-Hall, Raqqa.

The child, Saleh Fawaz Ahmad al Abdullah (pictured), and his family were killed after “Coalition warplane missiles fired on the old al Hal Market area south of Raqqa City” according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights. Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently listed the names of the family.

All sources attributed the attack to the US-led Coalition.

In the Amnesty and Airwars’s joint April 2019 report “War in Raqqa: Rhetoric versus Reality”, it was reported that “Five members of the al-Ali family were killed in a second strike on a two-storey house they were sheltering in in Harat al Sakhani.”

The daughter of a victim, Fatima, added in a testimony that “My relatives went from place to place in search of safety but were bombed in each place, and when they try to flee the city, they were shot at by Daesh. What were civilians supposed to do? What options did they have?”

Although initial reportage said the strike was on the 29th, Fatima confirmed it was actually on the 20th.

The incident occured at 20:00:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Five civilians including three children died in an airstrike on airstrike on Shai’eeb al Zakar, according to local sources though reports were conflicted as to whether Russia or the Syrian regime were responsible, with one report saying that the warplanes were thought to have belonged to the US-led Coalition.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently blamed a Russian strike on the village and named the victims.

In a news roundup, the Shaam News Network also blamed Russia, but did not provide casualty numbers.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, five civilians died in “bombing by Syrian and Russian warplanes” on “the villages of Jebbat al-Ghawali and Horat al-Jaryat south of al-Tabaqa city in the western countryside of Al-Raqqah.”

However, according to iumsonline, the Coalition may have responsible: “Warplanes thought to be from the coalition killed 5 civilians in Shai’eeb Al-Zakar one of whom is a displaced from Palmyra.”

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.
