Airwars assessment

Between two and three civilians were killed in a Coalition strike on the Al Rawda Al Muhammadiyah Mosque in the al-Muthanna area of Mosul city, according to local MP Abd Al Raheem Al Shamery and other sources. According to some reports, a kindergarten at the mosque was also destroyed.

Given reported British actions in the area that day, Airwars flagged the incident to the UK’s MoD which said “we can confirm that there was no UK involvement” in the event.

Airwars assessment

A UN report on the protection of civilians in the context of Nineveh operations and the retaking of Mosul stated: on 10 November: An airstrike hit Hatra subdistrict of Mosul. According to sources, between two civilians (children, aged seven and nine, respectively) and four civilians (two children and two women) were killed and nine other civilians, including seven women, wounded. HRO could not determine the exact number of casualties.

Airwars researchers have so far identified no known public allegations of civilians killed or injured relating to this incident.

In their May 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that the allegation provided insufficient information on the timing and location of the strike to make a determination.

Airwars assessment

At least 60 civilians were killed and as many as 100 injured in a series of airstrikes in al Qaim, according to reports. However, the alleged Coalition later denied responsibility.

Iraqi Spring Media Center said that 60 civilians were killed and 100 injured in an Iraqi government bombing that targeted al Qaim. A report posted on Rawh2015 and at least one other Facebook page indicated that three strikes took place – including on in front of the Grand Mosque and another targeted civilians during the receipt of pensions.

Rafidian Information Center reported that 6 air raids took place. A report in Shafaaq said the head of Iraq’s Parliament blamed the strikes on incorrect coordinates. Other outlets, including Euphrates Post, blamed the Coalition.

However, in a statement posted to Twitter, the Coalition’s spokesperson said that CJTF-OIR is aware of reports of civilian casualties near Al Qaim. We did not conduct strikes in the area around the time of the incident. This was later reiterated in the Coalition’s February 2017 civilian casualty report.

Later reports from Iraqi Spring Media Center put the death toll at 120 civilians. News of Iraq posted extremely graphic photographs of dead children.

Airwars assessment

A local source said that many civilians were killed or injured by Coalition airstrikes on Rashidiyah neighborhood in the north east of Mosul.

Iraqi Turkmen Front Mosul reported that their bodies were still under the rubble. It made appeal to the international Coalition “not to target civilians through inaccurate air raids or indiscriminate shelling of the Turkmen cities” that are under ISIL control.

Another source, Diyalafromheart, reported on Facebook about “victims in the East of Mosul”. However, it blamed the Iraqi Air Force for the bombing.

In its May 2017 casualty report, the Coalition said it had assessed the incident as Non Credible based on a lack of available information: “Jan. 17, 2017, near Mosul, Iraq, via social media report: After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that there is insufficient information available to determine if civilians were present or harmed in this strike.”

The Coalition confirmed to Airwars that this assessment related to the al Rashidiyah allegation. We continue to grade this as a Contested event.

Airwars assessment

At least two children were killed and other family members injured in New Mosul neighborhood in western Mosul. One source said ISIL targeted an unidentified warplane, which responded by launching a missile. The missile hit a house nearby, close to Yakatha mosque. However, Urgent Mosul News (Facebook) said that an ISIL car was targeted, which escaped without being damaged.

The victim was later named on a local neighbourhood blog page as Sana Faris Hamushi, a young girl. In another Facebook group page (سوالف مصلاويه عتيقه), it was reported that Taqwa Faris, a 9-year-old girl, had also died in the raids as a result of shrapnel injuries.

Local residents and press sources said dozens of civilians were killed or injured in Al Farouk neighbourhood in the west of Mosul. This reportedly included 19 members from the same family, including women and children. They died when their house was bombed. Sources reported that many of the victims were still under the rubble after shelling by different weapons had increasingly targeted the area.

A source told Yaqein that “the bombing caused the deaths of dozens of dead and wounded, amid the utter absence of any ambulance operations in light of the continuing bombings of the government.” Other sources also mentioned the Coalition. Witnesses told Al Jazeera Iraq that the bombing was “barbaric and indiscriminate.”

Sawif Ateka has named a 6-year old girl, Aya, as one of the victims.

Local residents and press sources said that seven civilians were killed and seven injured after alleged Coalition airstrikes targeted Cairo neighbourhood in Ana, in the west of Anbar province. While Iraqi Spring blamed the Coalition, the other two sources also mentioned the Iraqi forces.

Yaqein reported that “Seven civilians were killed and seven others were injured on Monday night when a government and international bombardment targeted a residential neighborhood in western Anbar province, the cities of which are under daily bombardment, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries and the destruction of homes and infrastructure.” It spoke of “intense aerial bombardment” on the district of Cairo in the city of Ana.
