Airwars assessment

Two or three civilians were reportedly killed and others were wounded by alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes on the village of Urm Al Sughra, western Aleppo countryside, on February 9th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported it had documented the death of three civilians as the result of Russian airstrikes. Shabha Press added that others were wounded.

The Syrian Civil Defence blamed both Russia and the Syrian regime for the airstrikes, and put the death toll at two killed civilians, matching Shaam News Network’s report of the incident.

Multiple other sources confirmed the deaths, but did not identify any specific names.

One woman was reported killed and eight others including five children injured, originally from Aleppo’s southern countryside residing in Qabtan Al Jabal in Aleppo’s western countryside when allegedly Russian forces or Syrian regime airstrikes targeted the town on the night between Feb 13th and 14th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence reported “the death of a woman from the village of Al-Othmania, south of Aleppo, and the injury of eight others, most of them from the southern countryside of Aleppo, who were displaced to the town of # Qubtan_jabal in the western countryside of Aleppo, as a result of the Russian warplanes targeting the town last night with six raids on February 13th, 2020.”

A Facebook post from Jiyraza Sons reported that the civilians that were injured sustained minor and moderate injuries.

@ShahbaPress said that casualties belong to the same family, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that “Russian warplanes carried out airstrikes targeting homes in the town of Qubtan al-Jabal near the Turkish point in Jabal Aqil, west of Aleppo, wounding an entire family.”

Al Jazeera, Our Syria News, and Syrian television each used social media to announce that eight civilians had been wounded, including five children. Each of the injured were displaced from their homes and living in Qubtan Al Jabal.  Syria HR News reported that a woman had been killed, along with the eight wounded, but no names were released.

Syria HR News reported that homes were struck during the raid that killed one woman and injured eight other civilians. @AJABreaking added that the raid occurred near the Turkish point in Jabal Aqil.

@ShahbaPress, SMART Agency, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syrian Civil Defence and Bawaba Aleppo accused Russia of this incident, while Step Agency blamed both Russia and the regime. @so_ria98 identified “high-explosive missiles” as being used in the attack.

Up to four civilians were reported killed and up to nine others were injured in alleged Russian airstrikes on Termaneen in Idlib, Syria on February 18th, 2020, according to local sources.

Step Agency reported that “Russian warplanes targeted the vicinity of the Turkish observation point in the town of Termaneen, north of Idlib, with vacuum rockets, killing three civilians and wounding four others, in addition to setting fires in residential buildings.”

The Local Syrian Coordination Committees of Syria reported that Amjad Abdul Rahman Beiruti and Tariq Khaled Al-Jumu’a were killed in the airstrikes. They stated that a third killed victim remained unnamed and @Free_roar put the death toll at four. They also identified four injured men.

A Facebook post from Termanin new generation also named four of the injured: Musab Sharif, Ammar Bakro, Abdul Latif Bakro, Abdul Rahman Beiruti.

@ufuk_sy reported eight injured, whereas the Syrian Civil Defence spoke of nine wounded civilians. According to Orient News, a woman and a child were among the wounded.

@Wesal_TV alleged that in addition to fires, there was “widespread destruction of civilian property”.

All sources blamed Russia forces for the airstrike.

SMART Agency reported from a military source that the Russian airstrikes were equipped with internationally prohibited weapons. “In the aerial bombardment on the village of Termanin by Russian warplanes, the ammunition that targeted the village is rockets and “napalm” incendiary bombs, which are considered internationally prohibited weapons.” A tweet from @darwiesh78 also referred to the munition used as “internationally prohibited phosphorus bombs” while @ala_hacioglu mentioned vacuum missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “warplanes believed to belong to the International Coalition bombed places in the Kdieran area which is located in the western countryside of al-Raqqa. There is information about casualties and damage to the property of the citizens.”

Both Qasioun and Sohaib_heskayi reported the Coalition “destroyed the Al-Hamdawi mosque” but didn’t mention civilian casualties.

In January 2019, the Coalition announced that it had classed the event as non credible due to a lack of available evidence of civilian harm: “After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that there is insufficient evidence to find civilians were harmed in this strike.”

Russian warplanes struck the town of Ihsem in the southern suburbs of Idlib on February 26th, 2020 killing one civilian.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights identified the man as Ahmad Yasin Hammoudi, and this was also reported by local sources, including a tweet from @Jabliat414.  Other local sources reported on the use of machine guns in this attack.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights was the only source that attributed responsibility for the incident, blaming Russia.

A Facebook post from Ehsilgmail added that Ahmad was killed while traveling on the Ahsam – Deir Sunbul road.
