Airwars assessment

At least three people were killed in alleged Israeli strikes between Sayyida Zainab and Aqraba on December 21-22, 2019. Sources are conflicted as to whether those killed were militants or civilians.

Local sources reported that Israeli missiles – either launched from a ship in the Mediterranean or via an airstrike – landed on the Sayyeda Zainab area of rural Damascus on December 21st-22nd, 2019, killing General ‘Haj Ali’, who was believed to be a leader in the ranks of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and his entire family. The Iranian Fars News Agency, however, denied reports that General Haj Ali had been killed.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “Israeli missile strikes south of the capital Damascus, killed at least three people of non-Syrian nationalities, where they are likely to be Iranians who were killed by fall of a rocket on the area between Sayyida Zainab and Aqraba south of the capital Damascus yesterday evening, and information about more casualties were reported.” However, this source did not specify if those killed were militants or civilians.

The Times of Israel also identified three people killed in the strikes, referring to them as “non-Syrian fighters”.

According to Step News, “The local (Ein Al Furat) network, which specializes in Iranian affairs in Syria, also mentioned that the targeting resulted in the killing of General Haj Ali, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard militia, and his entire family, as a result of a missile from the Israeli warship that targeted his house in Al Sayyeda Zainab neighbourhood in Damascus countryside.”

However, Sputnik Arabic wrote that the Iranian press agency Fars News had denied claims that General Haj Ali had been killed in strikes: “General Ali Hajizadeh is in good situation, and the news that he was killed is pure lies. The news that Haji Zadeh was killed in an Israeli raid on Syria yesterday is a rumour that was reported by some malicious Arab media, and it was re-published on social media via opposition channels.”

Fars News furthermore posted photos that were allegedly showing General Ali Haj attending Friday prayers on December 27th, 2019. Many articles have quoted General Hajizadeh since the alleged incident, including a profile done by the Middle East Eye that refers to him as the “Iran’s drone mastermind” and “the new Soleimani”.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, who told Fox News they don’t comment on foreign media reports of airstrikes.

The incident occured between 10:00 pm and 1:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that between seven and 22 civilians including a child and a volunteer with the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) were killed, and between 50 and 80 were injured, with most of them in critical conditions, when allegedly Russian forces or Syrian regime forces allegedly targeted with airstrikes the busy local market (Souq al-Hal) and the industrial area in Idlib, Syria on January 15th, 2020. The airstrikes also caused damage to civilians’ properties.

This happened four days after Russia and the Syrian regime declared a ceasefire in Idlib.

According to Shaam News, “Russian and Asad warplanes and helicopters launched intense and violent airstrikes. This appears to be the announcement of the end of the fragile truce that lasted only four days, as the aircraft committed a massacre in the city of Idlib, killing 19 martyrs and injuring dozens, among them women and children”.

Abdul Qadir Muhammad Rajab, Obaida Qutai’, Ahmed Muhammad Aswad,  Adnan Sheikhouni, Maher Sheikhouni, Muhammad Shadi al-Asaad, Ali Muhammad Ali Al-Atrash, Omar Na`es, Alaa Al-Muhammad, Omar Zidan, Zakaria La’la’, Ahmed Al-Zein and Farouk Afara were killed in the incident.

The Syrian Civil Defense in Idlib said “Today, January 15th, 2020, we say goodbye to our hero Volunteer “Shadi al-Asaad”, as a martyr after Idlib attacks by Assad’s warplanes. After years of sacrifice, we will not forget your work, your words and all the beautiful memories with you. Rest in peace.”

Edlib Media Center posted saying “There are dozens of martyrs and wounded due to raids by the war regime on Idlib city.” The source later updated the numbers raising the death toll to “19 martyrs and dozens of wounded” – killed by “missiles from warplanes”.

Also according to SMART Agency “The head of the Documentation and Information Department of a hospital in Idlib city, Abdul Razzaq Ghafir, said that 19 civilians, including a child and a civil defense member were killed and 70 others, including children and women, were wounded in an initial outcome, as a result of shelling by regime warplanes on the industrial area in the eastern side of Idlib.”

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “Syrian regime fixed- wing warplanes fired missiles on the industrial area in east of Idlib city, causing a massacre and severely destroying a number of the industrial shops, on January 15th.” @HadiAlabdallah added that strikes also occurred at Al-Hal Market. @shamalmjd1 also referred to Souq al-Hal and al-Sina’a neighborhood as being affected by the bombing.

Syrian Human Rights Committee provided details that “Hal Market, which sells vegetables and fruits in bulk; It is located near the well-known Mihrab roundabout in Idlib city, and is a few meters away from the industrial area. The industrial area is densely populated, while Souq al-Hal is a non-residential area, but it was crowded and at peak time when the bombing occurred. The bombing led to significant material damage to the shops in the market, and the industrial ones in the industrial area.”

@Mamoun_sy, @ShahbaPress and @so_ria98 blamed Russia for the incident, while Macro Media Center, Syrian Civil Defense Idlib, SMART agency and the Syrian Network for Human Rights pointed to the Syrian regime. Shaam News and @mohmad_rasheed blamed both.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Up to five civilians were wounded in alleged Russian airstrikes on Maarat al-Numan, according to local media.

@ShahbaPress tweeted: “Civilians were injured after raids by Russian occupation planes on the southern city of Maarat al-Numan in the southern Idlib countryside and the town of Taftanaz in the northern countryside.”

Macro Media Center said that “five civilians were wounded as a result of Russian warplanes targeting civilian homes in the western neighborhood of the city of Maarat al-Numan”.

@liveuamar specified that the location of the strikes occurred in the western neighborhood of Maarat al-Numan. A post from the Local Coordination Committee of Syria put the time of the strikes that resulted in civilian injuries at 15:32 and identified four civilians injured.

A tweet from @tLUPsIRbe9wL30s includes a video of a child crying in a destroyed home. The child is said to have been living in the house with his mother and siblings before it was reduced to rubble by the strikes and had already lost his father in strikes by the regime on their home.

Sources were conflicted as to who carried out strikes in city of Maarat al-Numan, with @resalapost attributing artillery shelling to the regime while @RadioAlKul blamed the strikes that resulted in civilian casualties on Russian warplanes. @thawrat111 identified vacuum missiles as being used in the attack.

Airwars assessment

Three or four Syrian Civil Defense ‘White Helmets’ volunteers were reported lightly wounded when Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes targeted their center in Tal Menas in Idlib, Syria on January 25th, 2020, according to local sources.

Syrian Civil Defense said in a FB post that “Saleh Ihrahim, Ihab Hashash, and Abdul Qadir Al-Sulaiman, three volunteers from Tal Menas center were injured as a result of airstrikes by Russian warplanes while they were in Al Ruwaiha village.”

However, Ariha Today said that “In the town of Ruwaiha, the Tal Menas Civil Defense Center was targeted by Russian warplanes, which resulted in the injury of three volunteers, lightly destroying the rescue vehicle and some equipment in the center.”

Shaam Network said the attack caused a suspension of the services of Tal Menas medical center.

Step Agency and SMART Agency blamed both Russia and the Syrian regime for the incident, while Ariha Today, @SyrianCoalition and Syrian Civil Defense blamed Russia, but Shaam Network blamed both Russia and the Syria regime for that. The Syrian Coalition reported that three missiles launched by Russian warplanes struck the center.
