Airwars assessment

Between four and seven civilians died in airstrikes on Al Maghayer as part of the ongoing bombardment of Aleppo, according to local sources. The majority of reports point to this being a regime incident, though one other blames the regime and Russia.

Zamanalwasel News spoke of raids carried out by regime warplanes “on most of the districts of Aleppo”. It continued saying that “warplanes committed a massacre in the neighborhood of “Al-Maghayer”, which killed seven people according to the initial death toll and wounded dozens, including children and the elderly.” The correspondent furthermore explained that “the regime helicopters targeted a neighbourhood with seven gas cylinders.”

Images tweeted by Baladi News showed the “destruction of Al-Maghayer after being targeted by a raid.” Sorya_gehadk reported in a tweet that “at least 5 were killed and many were wounded, some with serious injuries, in shelling on Al-Maghayer”. AJABreaking News also put the death toll at five. TRT Arabic said that five were killed by regime warplanes.

An extremely graphic video by AMC showed severely injured victims being treated in a medical facility. The channel attributed the incident to the regime. According to Halab News, “47 were killed on the 29th in various areas. As for Al-Maghayer, only one was identified as Hasan Amer Al-Sayed”. They also listed three unidentified bodies killed in Al Maghayer by “navy mines“.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “at least 4 victims including a woman died in government helicopters dropped barrel bombs on Al Maghayer neighbourhood“. And according to Shaam News Network four civilians died, though they were “Russian and Assad’s planes“.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Between three and seven civilians including two children died in raids on Bustan al Qasr, according to local sources. All sources but one blamed the regime – though Shaam News Network mentioned Russian and regime warplanes.

In a video issued by Shaam News Network a White Helmet member says that “there were four barrels thrown on Bustan Al-Qaser in the last hour. There are five martyrs and 10 injured somewhere else. And in another place [there are] 10 injured, and in a third one 10 injured, and here there are many injured and they are looking for a missing boy and found him. The White Helmets crew is ready to do their duties.”

In another video, Hadi Al-Abdullah explains that “it is a very difficult place to rescue the injured, because they are open to the regime sniper. There are regime helicopters and warplanes all over the sky.” Hadi’s video also captured barrel throwing on civilians as it happened.

World Akhbar news reports that “six people were killed and others injured on Friday evening due to aerial bombing by the Syrian regime that targeted Bustan Al-Qaser neighborhood, in the city of Aleppo, with explosive barrels. Syrian activists said the shelling caused the complete destruction of “Bustan Al-Qaser medical point” in the center of Aleppo.”

An Al Jazeera reporter, Montaser Abu-Nabut, stated that 7 people were killed and tens were injured including women and children in raids by Syrian and Russian warplanes on Bustan Al-Qaser, Al-Helluk, Bab Al-Neirab, Al-Kallaseh, Al-Tarrab, and A’ziza neighbours.

Rm_hamada tweeted an image of a girl along with the following text: “#Hala is a little girl from Aleppo, crying over her mom’s body after being hit with a barrel [that was] thrown on their flat in Bustan Al-Qaser.”

Alkalimah_online also reported the incident in a tweet, saying that according to Syrian activists “Bustan Al_Qaser medical point was completely destroyed by explosive barrels.” In a report, Abarah Press reported that the death toll had risen to 25 people and dozens were wounded in a “rocket bombardment on Bustan Al-Qaser neighborhood and Kallaseh neighbourhood”.

The White Helmets said that three civilians were killed by regime barrel bombs, while the Syrian Network  also blamed the regime and said of three victims two were children.

According to the Syrian Observatory, all of the strikes in the previous eight days were carried out by the regime. They said that “about 226 civilians including over 50 women and children [were] killed in 8 days of heavy bombardment on Aleppo city“.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Local sources reported about continued airstrikes in al-Sakhour, Aleppo, that killed up to five civilians, including one child and wounded up to four. Sources were constesting regarding the cultprit, pointing to both the Assad regime and Russia.

Shaam News Network, reported “For the eighth day in a row Assad’s and Russian aircraft continue to pour their lava on residential neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo, causing dozens of massacres“. Its initial report said one civilian died, later revising the death toll to five.

Abarah Press said “two people were killed and several wounded by aerial bombardment by three rockets on Al-sakhur neighborhood east of the city.” And Qasioun news reported that Syrian and Russian warplanes had targeted the “Al-Mash’had, Alsakhur neighborhoods, and Kallaseh, Al-Sukari, Bustan Al-Qaser, Alqaterji, and Marjeh”, which left many casualties and led to the destruction of property.

There was some confusion over who was responsible for the raids. In a later report, Qasioun news blamed only Russia, saying that the “Russian warplanes bombardment circle was expanded to affect neighbourhoods (Al-Mash’had, Alsakhur, and Kallaseh) in the city of Aleppo, causing significant destruction of civilian property, without news of casualties.”

In a tweet, Damascus Coordinate named one of the killed civilians as Abdul-Kader Mohammed Al-Masri (13 years), saying that the child “was killed and four were injured in an air raid on Al-Sakhur.”

Airwars assessment

The attempted US targeted killing of the Australian Neil Prakash, ‘an ISIL external operations facilitator’ instead “struck three civilians on the road and one civilian located on an adjacent compound,” CENTCOM admitted three months later.

Among the four civilians who were killed in the airstrike that day, one man was named by local sources, Ziad Khalaf Awad, who was a university teacher.

Although Neil Prakash was widely reported killed in the attack at the time, the New York Times confirmed in November 2016 that he was still alive: “An Australian, Neil Prakash, was targeted in a strike around the same time. A senior American official said that Mr Prakash was wounded but survived. In the last few weeks, however, a Middle Eastern government arrested Mr Prakash, another senior American military official said.” ABC News Australia reported that Prakash “was arrested by Turkish officials when he tried to cross the Syrian border into Turkey using false documents and a fake name.”

According to the New York Times, “among the injured was Hassan Aleiwi Muhammad Sultan, now 16, who was playing soccer nearby and still has shrapnel in his spinal cord. His family can barely afford his wheelchair.”

In July 2019, the Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a 100 metre box.
