Airwars assessment

Up to four militants were killed in alleged Yemeni or US airstrikes in Mount Khanfar on April 18, 2012 according to local sources. However, Xinhua reported that there were no casualties.

Dawn News reported that a second air raid hit another position held by militants, but did not provide any further details. Alhawyah quoted a Yemeni military source who said that “warplanes launched air strikes on Al Qaeda sites in the Al-Ain region, and that the raids resulted in the death and injury of dozens of Al Qaeda members, in addition to destroying three armored vehicles and damaging two Al Qaeda personnel.” However, it is unclear whether this refers to the incident near Mount Khanfar or airstrikes in Loder on the same evening.

Dawn News also pointed out that the statement from the Yemeni military did not specify whether the air raids were carried out by the Yemeni government or US drones.

A tweet from @southernissue identified airstrikes as occurring in Mount Khanfar. Yafa News also mentioned that airstrikes hit sites in the Amin Triangle and in the mountains surrounding Baluder, causing damage to military equipment and vehicles. Local residents told Xinhua that two further air strikes targeting militant positions on Jabal Khanfar, a hill over looking the city of Ja’ar in Abyan province, and Xinhua attributed the airstrikes to the Yemeni military.

This incident was the second strike of the day (USYEM062-C).

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

In an event previously not tracked by Airwars, the Coalition later confirmed the injury of one civilian in an artillery strike near Ash Sha’fa, Syria. This was later confirmed by the Pentagon to be a US-only event.

In its June 2019 civilian casualty report, the Coalition noted: “Coalition artillery conducted a strike against a Daesh facility. Regrettably, one civilian was unintentionally wounded due to their proximity to the strike.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location of this incident, accurate to within a 100 metre box.

In May 2020, the Pentagon in its annual report to Congress conceded this as a US-only action.

Original strike reports

US Forces

At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense airstrike in a remote area near Hareeri Kalle, approximately 15 kilometers south of Galcad, Somalia against al-Shabaab terrorists.

The airstrike was in support of Somali National Army forces who were engaged by the terrorist organization.

Working with the Somali National Army, U.S. Africa Command’s initial assessment is that the U.S. airstrike killed 5 al-Shabaab terrorists and that no civilians were injured or killed.

U.S. Africa Command takes great measures to prevent civilian casualties. Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the command’s operations to promote a more secure and stable Africa.

Al-Shabaab is the largest and most kinetically active al-Qaeda network in the world and has proved both its will and capability to attack partner and U.S. forces and threaten U.S. security interests.

Somalia remains key to the security environment in East Africa. U.S. Africa Command’s forces will continue training, advising, and equipping partner forces to give them the tools that they need to degrade al-Shabaab.

U.S. Africa Command will continue to assess the results of this operation and will provide additional information as appropriate. Specific details about the units involved and assets used will not be released in order to ensure operations security.

Airwars assessment

At least eight civilians, including eight members of the same family, were killed and a number of others were wounded when an alleged Israeli bomb hit the Samour family house on Al-Fajm Street, in the Bani Suhaila area, east of Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, on the evening of Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

Petra News reported that eight family members were killed, as well as a number of injured civilians. All were reportedly taken to Nasser Medical Hospital. Eight of the victims were identified by their family members as 62-year-old Rawhiya Muslim Sammour, 45-year-old Raafat Ibrahim Sammour, 35-year-old Assef Issa Sammour, his 37-year-old brother Musa Issa Sammour, Musa’s wife 31-year-old Hana Adel Al-Fajm. Three children, a 13-year-old boy named Ahmed Musa Sammour, a nine-year-old boy named Salem Musa Sammour, and a five-year-old girl named Ghazal Musa Salem Sammour were also among those killed.

Om Abdullah Hajras made a Facebook post mourning the death of her sister’s husband Abu Al-Abd Sammour; this is likely to be the nickname of one of the victims named above.

Al-Quds News reported on October 12th that there were 10 bodies believed to still be under the rubble. Airwars has not yet included these individuals in the casualty range, but will update the assessment should further information come to light.

Mahmoud Alraqeeb reported on Facebook that only three civilians were killed in the strike but all other sources, including the Samour family themselves, report at least eight were killed.

Al-Quds News reported that the bodies of the eight family members were quickly rescued from the rubble by rescue workers and were identified in the morgue by friends and relatives. The bodies of the Samour family were taken from the hospital, wrapped in burial shrouds and covered in a floral blanket, and placed in an empty square where hundreds of men prayed nearby.

@WWIIIAR claimed the strike took place without warning.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.
