Airwars assessment

On March 9th, in the morning, at 9 am, the Russian military allegedly launched airstrikes and then shelled a five story building at 2 Pershotravneya Street in Izyum from a tank on the opposite side until it collapsed. The attack killed between 44 to 54 people, many families, who were trapped under the debris of the house. At least two of the witnesses who provided testimony were injured, but it is unclear how many others were injured. The only survivors were those who had not been able to go down to the basement. There are conflicting accounts of when rescue missions were permitted or able to commence but they may have started as early as late March as per Human Rights Watch and as late as September of 2022.

Fakty.ua News reported a one survivor’s account of the incident, who saw his family die.  “Everyone had breakfast together, after which my three-year-old granddaughter asked: “Grandpa, please give me some tea.” I took the thermos and went out on the landing. The wife said: ” I’m coming with you.” But she did not have time to leave. There was an explosion. I was thrown back by the blast wave and I don’t know how long I was unconscious – maybe half an hour or so. When he came to, he saw that he was stuck up to his waist in a metal ladder that he had once welded himself. My feet were crushed by concrete blocks. I somehow managed to pull one out immediately, and the other was pressed down, it seemed, tightly. I was saved by a book that got stuck between my leg and a concrete slab. And the fact that water began to flow from the boiler on one of the upper floors. The book got wet quickly, I was able to pull it out, and then pulled out my leg. Then he tried to crawl through the concrete block for a long time and still managed to do it. When I saw what happened to the basement where my family was, I immediately understood everything. There was no hope left – everything there was covered with concrete slabs. I called my wife several times. No sound in response. I couldn’t believe it actually happened. That they died. That there is no wife, no children, no grandchildren – no one… It seemed that this could not be true, that this was some kind of terrible dream. I called for help. At my cry, one person came, but when the slabs started to fall again from above, he quickly left. I got outside. In two sports pants, in two sweaters and barefoot. Minus 10 outside… I spent the next three days at a neighbor’s country house. Due to the fact that it was cold there and I had to sleep almost outside, I caught a cold in my kidneys. But all this was no longer important” [Quote edited to protect anonymity of survivor]. The bodies were pulled from the rubble on April 12th.

Another survivor speaking to Fakty, had moved back to the building to live with his mother. He was heating broth when the building was hit. His mother and him “began to fall down, but he somehow managed to hold on and pulled his mother out. They survived, and his mother is now the only one living in the surviving part of our destroyed house. In another apartment, a man who was in the bathroom at the time of the explosion survived. His wife, who was in the room, died.”

Four generations of family were killed including between at least three to five children. People who initially survived for the first few days were unable to access assistance and testimonies ascribe this to Russians preventing any rescue efforts. Sources reported that one 71 year old woman whose son and his family lived in the building, walked 7 miles to the site daily, to search for them but Russian military obstructed her efforts. When Emergency Services eventually mounted the rescue, and pulled out bodies, the women recalled to Hromadske News that “You couldn’t recognize anything there. One corpse was headless, face burned. No one had a face at all. One of the 45 people whose face has survived is my son. It was thrown under the pipes by an explosive wave.” Hromadske and Zn.Ua reported that the dead were identified by any personal belongings on the bodies that had survived the incident or DNA testing. The survivor who spoke to Fakty corroborated this account. He said “We know for sure that 52 people were trapped under the rubble. But we never found seven of them. Many of those who were found could not be identified. We recognized people by phone numbers — if we found a phone nearby, rearranged the SIM card, called neighbors, the number was determined — and we found out what kind of person it was. I recognized one woman by the keys I found in her possession – I found the door to which they fit, and realized that she was our neighbor”. Another neighbour was identified by their passport.

Anticor-kharkiv news published testimonies of neighbours who, hiding from their houses, witnessed artillery, shooting and airstrikes being used in concert in the incident.  “They shot into the middle of the house. This is what I was told by direct witnesses who were saved and residents of the street. Zamostyanskoi, on which the tanks stood”. Although Ukranian military had been in the area in the days around when the incident took place, people speaking to Anticor-Kharkiv confirmed on March 9th that there were neither Ukrainian military equipment in or near the building, nor were there soldiers in the area. Human Rights Watch corroborated this information in a report “witnesses who were in the basement or lower floors said they had not seen Ukrainian forces in or directly around the building just before or at the time of the attack. One local resident who had been in the basement, said others there saw Ukrainian soldiers come into the basement days earlier and ask the building manager for keys to the attic to check it.”

Media quoted Ukranian sources verifying the accuracy of the lists of the dead that the Russians published lists.

The incident occured between 7:00 am and 9:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

A 15 year old boy was injured by alleged Russian airstrikes on the village of Bzabor in Idlib on May 30, 2023.

Local sources from the countryside of Idlib governorate told Zaman Al Wasl that 15-year-old Muhammad Malik Ahmed Haj Musa was wounded by Russian airstrikes on Bzabor village. The Syrian Civil Defense (@SyriaCivilDefe) tweeted that a boy was injured by shrapnel from an airstrike which struck a home.

A tweet from @idleb_online referred to the site of the airstrike as belonging to a terrorist without providing any information on casualties while @ShaamNetwork tweets that the location is a “civilian house and agricultural land.”

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the victim was driving his motorbike by the home at the time of the airstrikes, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment for his injuries. A video posted by @anasanas84 allegedly taken by a Russian reconnaissance plane shows the motorcycle driving by a house at the exact time that an airstrike hit the building.

Abdul Karim, a volunteer with the White Helmets, described the home that was destroyed: “The family members who live in this house survived while they were working to harvest the mahaleb crop on their nearby farm, but they lost their memories of the haven that used to bring them together after the earthquake, and the walls that withstood that day, today they did not withstand the missiles, and the raids of the Russian warplanes destroyed it.”

Aljazeera (@ajmubasher) quoted the Syrian opposition air traffic tracking observatory as reporting that a Russian plane took off Tuesday at noon from Hmeimim base in Lattakia governorate and bombed the village of Bzabour in the Idlib countryside. North Press Agency identified high-explosive missiles as being used in the airstrikes. All other sources also attributed the airstrikes to Russia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Airwars assessment

On October 8th 2023, Israeli military aircraft were reported to have carried out an airstrike on the Al-Najjar family home in the Al-Fakhoura area of the Jabalia refugee camp in north Gaza, killing an unknown number of people and injuring at least four people.

The Shehab Agency tweeted that there were “injuries as the [Israeli] aircraft targeted the Al-Najjar family’s home in the Al-Fakhoura area in the Jabalia refugee camp, north of the Gaza Strip”. The Jabalia refugee camp itself confirmed the attack on its Facebook page: “Targeting a house for the Al-Najjar family in the Al-Fakhoura area in the Jabalia camp”. One local journalist, Faton Ayman, specifically stated that there were “four injuries in the Kamal Adwan Hospital”.

@WaellodaOda, @i_07070 and Rania Al Khodary all posted statements which were identical to that of a Safa correspondent who reported that there had been “[killed] and injured in the bombing of the Al-Najjar family’s home and the Hassouna family’s home near Al-Fakhoura School in Jabalia”.  Several other social media accounts indicated that there had been people killed as well as people injured at the camp, whilst additionally stating that the strike had occurred in proximity to a school.

While the exact number of casualties was not reported, in line with Airwars’ methodology the minimum range has been assessed as two to account for references to multiple deaths.

The previous day, on October 7, another alleged Israeli strike was reported on the Al-Najjar family home, killing Hajj Hamdan Al-Najjar, an official of the Ministry of the Interior along with his wife, son and granddaughter. This incident has been assessed separately by Airwars in case number ISPT0002.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

On the evening of October 9th, 2023, up to 15 members of the al-Madhoun family, including two women and eleven children, were killed as a result of an alleged Israeli airstrike on the al-Madhoun family home located behind the Golden Hall in the Americana area west to the town of Beit Lahyia in the northern Gaza Strip. According to the Defense for Children Palestine (DCI Palestine) report, the attack on the two-story family house happened without a prior warning.

Initially the family members and “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” correspondent reported about 14 people killed. “The entire family was removed from the civil registry and registered with the Immortals” wrote their relative Fayeq al-Madhoun on Facebook. A family member Ahmad al-Madhoun wrote on the social media platform “X” to confirm the death of the 14 members of the al-Madhoun family, posting the picture of the rubble which used to be the family house. He wrote: “14 members of my family were martyred in a massacre and direct bombing of the Al-Madhoun family home in the Sudaniya area, including children and women!”.

Later, local news agencies Shehab Agency, Wafa News, Daqiqa News reported that the Israeli military bombed the home of the two brothers Dr. Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun and Dr. Ahmed Akram Rahim al-Madhoun, subsequently leading to their death and the death of 13 other family members of the al-Madhoun family, including Muhammad’s wife and six children and Ahmed’s wife and five children. The brothers’ cousin Abu Habib shared testimony on Facebook posting the pictures of the two brothers who lost their lives in the attack.

The following day, on October 10th, a family member Abu Mohammed Madhoun confirmed on Facebook that the six children of Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun killed in the airstrike were: Fatima Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun (female, child, 7), Amani Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun (female, child, 4), Mahmoud Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun (male, child, 9), Akram Muhammad Abdel Rahim al-Madhoun (male, child, 10), Karam Muhammad Abdel Rahim al-Madhoun (male, child 3), Watan Muhammad Abdel Rahim al-Madhoun (male, child, 1), alongside Amal Mahmoud Zayed al-Zaanin (al-Madhoun) (female, 39 years old) – likely to be Muhammad Abd al-Rahim al-Madhoun’s wife. The source added that specialised teams continued to search for the remaining members of the family under the rubble of their home.

Sources on the ground told correspondents for the Palestinian News Agency ‘Wafa’ that the brothers’ father Akram Musa Al-Madhoun, their mother and two brothers were killed by an alleged Israeli bombing of the neigbouring house during the 2021 Israeli campaign in the Gaza Strip. However, their relative Douha Madhoon wrote on Facebook that in fact their father, their younger brother Abdullah, and Muhammad’s first wife were killed at that time, while their mother had died of cancer years ago.

The deaths of so many members of the al-Madhoun family was reported on by relatives across the globe. In Australia, a family relative Hadeel al-Madhoun spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald to tell the story of her father learning of the loss of life of at least 14 family members through an Al Jazeera report. “A 78-year old Mousa al-Madhoun was sitting in the loungeroom of his Mickleham home, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, watching Al Jazeera, when a reporter announced an Israeli missile had destroyed the Al-Madhoun family compound in Beit Lahia, an area in the northern part of the territory, killing 14 people. He dropped the cup of coffee he was holding, stared at the screen and started crying”, she told Sydney Morning Herald.. The brothers who owned the house were Mousa’s cousins. Hadeel Al-Madhoun told the Australian reporters that she had lost at least 33 family members in Gaza since the Israeli bombardment began. “I don’t think the world is really seeing what is happening,” she added.

A Palestinian American Hani Almadhoun who lives in Virginia learned Monday morning from a Telegram chat that an Israeli airstrike killed at least 14 members of his family, including five children and elderly relatives. “Death comes very fast,” Almadhoun told HuffPost. “We don’t get any solidarity.” Before he hadn’t been able to reach his family in Gaza for the last four days.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
