Airwars assessment

Three civilians, a woman and two men, local to the village of Bezruky were reported to have been killed and a further individual injured as a result of shelling allegedly by Russian service personnel on April 25, 2022. Villagers in conversation with Suspline News confirmed these casualties occurred around noon in light of shelling that had begun at 6 in the morning and continued until at least 4pm the same day.

It is unclear if the civilians were killed by the impact of the shelling or, as reported by @ICTV_fakly, by the fires caused by the attacks. An image posted by Suspline News which may detail the scene of the deaths details a collapsed building due to the shelling. The roof appears to have been completely demolished with debris littering the street outside; the building is part of a row of storefronts.

Local community chairman to Dergachiv, Vyacheslav Zadorenko, described the day’s events as “In the city of Dergachi and almost all settlements, they [Russian military] beat artillery, hailstones and mortars. Almost all over the community there are destroyed houses, they are burning now”. Widely reported by sources such as Hromadske news, TSN.ua, and Rayon the Russian forces had additionally hit gas pipes, leaving homes and businesses within 2500 yards of the impact without gas.

This assessment has reference to ACLED code UKR56477.

The incident occured around midday.

Airwars assessment

On Friday April 15th 2022, an alleged Russian missile strike hit the Sarhyn Yar neighborhood and the Shevchenkivskyi district in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, killing between 7 and 10 civilians, including a seven month old, and injuring between 34 and 50 civilians, including up to nine children.

Sources are not consistent regarding the number of civilians harmed by the attack. The majority of them, including Ukrainska Pravda, Inforesist, and Suspilne Kharkiv account for 10 civilians being killed, Kharkiv Today reported 9, while KHPG-inform and Kharkiv Today, among others, report either 7 or 8.

On the other hand, majority of the sources report, 42 injured civilians, including Kharkiv Times, KHPG-inform, and Suspilne Kharkiv, but the same sources also report lower numbers such as 34 or 35.This discrepancy in reporting can be justified by the number of victim rising after the initial reports after the attack, as explained by Ukrainska Pravda. Focus News, quoting Maksim Khautov, Director of the Public Health Department of the OVA, accounted for 50 civilians being injured, including 33 adults and nine children.

Natalya Popova, adviser to the head of the Kharkiv regional council, added that doctors were fighting for the lives of two children. A Facebook post by Yuriy Shevchenko identified a 7 year old child as sustaining a serious wound to their leg.

Reports from the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group and the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union both quote Suspilne Kharkiv reporting the declarations of Maksym Khoustov, Director of the Health Department of KHOVA, and Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, accounting for 42 injured and 10 killed civilians.

Almost all sources, including Inforesist, Kharkiv Times, and Vgorode, identified one of the victims as a seven-month-old infant and between three to nine children injured.

In addition, the prosecutor’s office of the Kharkiv region initiated a pre-trial investigation for premeditated murder related to the event, as reported by Kharkiv prosecutor’s office telegram channel.

Objektiv.TV stated that the attack in the KhTZ area of Kharkiv took place around 16:16, when emergency services were dispatched, hitting a residential area and a playground. In addition, Suspilne Kharkiv stated that the attack in the Industrial district of Kharkiv took place at about 16:30, damaging and destroying several residential buildings with Uragan multiple rocket launchers, as also mentioned by the Kharkiv prosecutor’s office telegram channel. KHPG-inform added that a dental polyclinic was hit with shelling in addition to residential areas.

The suspected attacker is alleged to be Russia, as reported by most of the sources including Truexanewsua, Suspilne Kharkiv, and Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s telegram channel, although responsibility has been contested by Kharkov Nash telegram channel, a Ukrainian channel based in Kharkiv, claiming that Russian troops near Kharkiv are using different weapons than those used in the attack, saying they would not use “grads” but “tornadoes”, due to the range of attack of the first ones being too small.

The incident has reference to ACLED code UKR55820 and Bellingcat code CIV0798.

The incident occured at approximately 4:16 pm local time.

Task Force Wagram conducted 80 artillery strikes."

Airwars assessment

A young man was killed and others were injured during an alleged Syrian Democratic Forces and US airdrop operation in the village of Salham on June 11, 2023. Sources were conflicted as to whether the young man was a member of ISIS or a civilian.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the Syrian-regime news organization, reported that one civilian was killed and others were injured during a US forces airdrop operation at dawn in the village of Salham. The source added that US forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) blocked off the area and opened fire, which led to the death of a civilian and injury of others.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, one person accused of being a member of ISIS was killed after resisting and clashing with the SDF and Coalition forces, while one other person was arrested. A tweet from @DeirEzzore identified a young man named Faraj Mutlaq Al-Nazal Al-Suhaili as the one who was killed, adding that he worked as a smuggler between Syria and Iraq. Euphrates Post added that Faraj was a resident of the town of Tal Hamis.

Euphrates Post stated that several of the houses in the village of Salham were searched during the operation.

Athr Press pointed out that the operation occurred the morning of the same day that an American helicopter crashed in northeastern Syria, resulting in the injury of 22 soldiers.

In a civilian casualty assessment released on November 30th 2023, the Coalition classed this event as ‘non credible’, claiming that “Based on a thorough review of all available information, the allegation was found not credible because the actions were not attributable to U.S. or Coalition Forces.”

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

On June 17th 2012, an alleged airstrike or shelling by the US military or Yemen Air Force caused the death of up to nine civilians in the town of Azzan, Shabwa province. There are currently no known reports of injured.

The US news channel Fox News claimed that six Al Qaeda militants were killed in the strike which was part of an “offensive to rout Al Qaeda from its hideouts”. However, Twitter user @shabbirghewalla put the total death toll at nine, referring only to “Yemeni’s” as being killed and leaving it unclear how many civilians and militants were among the casualties.

Yemeni military officials assumed responsibility for the strike, Fox News reported. This was contested by @shabbirghewalla who reported that the US military was responsible for the attack.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
